This has been one of the strangest starts to a term that I can remember with so many short weeks. It could have been really hard to stay focussed with a number of activities including the track and field carnivals also “getting in the way” of learning, but I have been very impressed by the determination of both students and staff to remain on-task. At every enrolment [and we welcomed more than 20 new students this term] I try to impress on the students and their families that here @ISH we are preparing our young people for the world of work. It is important that they learn resilience as well as showing respect and responsibility, because those traits will serve them well in the real world. Certainly I can say they are clearly evident this term. You will all be aware that the new Performing Arts Block is now in full use. I am pleased to let you know that the Minister of Education has told me that she intends to officially open it in person. We are now waiting on her preferred date. I hope that many of you are also aware of an election commitment from the federal labour Party to co-fund the construction of our proposed community Sports Hub should they gain government. This would be a huge asset to the school, and would provide up to four indoor courts for HPE classes, and two competition courts marked for basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal. We already have a number of local clubs and associations preparing to hire these spaces after school and during weekends and holidays – and it hasn’t even been built yet. I am also in discussion with the state Government’s facilities branch about the construction of new teaching blocks to cater for the increased enrolments we have experienced this year and which are predicted to occur for the next couple of years at least. We may well have almost 2000 student here in 2020, so obviously we need new classrooms. These talks are now at a design stage and we hope to be able to get approval for construction to start in term 4. While the new building[s] will not be ready for the start of the new year, I have confirmation that a number of demountables will be provided on-site to cater for the increase in numbers. There will be some short-term pain for a long-term gain. Thank you to the many parents who attended the parent teacher interviews last week, many for the first time. I know from speaking with many of the staff that they were very busy, but happy to discuss your child’s progress and to help you understand some of the changes in curriculum which have begun this year. Your partnership with us in the education of your child[ren] is essential to their progress. If we are all pointing in the same direction, they will find it very hard to get lost on their journey. Congratulations to all those students who have achieved Regional and/or State selection in the most recent round of carnivals; I know there will be plenty more honours to come. I am particularly looking forward to returning to the coach’s role in a couple of weeks when I take the U15 boys Rugby Sevens team to the CISSSA carnival. Luckily we have some very talented players in that age group, so they may do very well despite my suggestions rather than because of them! Simon Riley Principal RIGHT TIME, RIGHT PLACE One term gone and the second is already underway, the year is rushing past! As part of the Ipswich State High School commitment to High Expectations we are continuing with our fortnightly focus. This weeks it is “I am Responsible for wearing the right uniform.”

CAREERS UPDATE TERM 2 with NikkiShaw

Welcome back to Term 2, I hope everyone had a safe andrelaxing holiday. Over the break I was fortunate to go outto Goondiwindi to watch rockets being launched at ThundaDown Under and as part of the Australian Universities RocketryCompetition (AURC). Universities from around Australia andNew Zealand were part of this completion, including TheUniversity of Queensland and QUT. Students who areinterested in STEM pathways at university may be interestedin joining a team at one of the participating universities as anextra- curricular and interesting pursuit. You will learn a lotabout collaborative team work, engineering skills, aerospaceand much more.

I have included a picture of a banner from The University ofQueensland for their rocket Athena and a picture of asuccessful launch from my son’s team from Australian NationalUniversity (ANU) with their rocket Astra. It was a reallyinteresting albeit dusty weekend. Another highlight for me wasseeing an all -girls high school from Canberra launch theirfirst rocket for certification, they were the only high school inAustralia to launch a rocket. It was really encouraging to see

WINTER WELLNESS – SURVIVAL TIPS

The season of illness would appear to have come early thisyear, with a range of highly contagious conditions already doingthe rounds, including colds, flu and gastro.

A few simple measures can reduce your chance of catchingor spreading these illnesses to those you love as well as thecommunity as a whole.

Influenza vaccination is highly effective and available for childrenand adults at many chemists, GPs as well as some workplaces. There may be some minor side effects but these are faroutweighed by the time off work or school if you are unfortunateenough to catch the flu.

Other than vaccination, hand washing is the number one wayto prevent illness from spreading. Remember to encourageyour children to wash their hands with soap, water and drythem when they come home from school, other places such asshopping centres, prior to eating and always after going to thebathroom.

Use tissues to sneeze or blow your nose, then throw thesestraight in the bin. If you do not have a tissue available considersneezing into the notch of your elbow rather than a hand as thissignificantly reduces the risk of transfer.

Do not come to work, school or go out to places such asshopping centres or the movies if you are unwell, this will helpreduce the chance of illnesses spreading.

Should you or your children experience any symptoms ofconcern please see your doctor or call 13health (13432584).For the cost of a local call this 24 hour a day service is staffedby registered nurses who are able to give quality health advice.

Prevention is the best defence.

Stay Well.Regards Nurse Angi

COOKING CLASSES

My name is Tina Gilroy and I am in my 36thyear of teaching Home Economics, and thisis my 18th year at Ipswich State HighSchool. At school I teach Modern Chef,Home Economics- Food Technology, FoodStudies, and Hospitality. I believe it is important to engage thewider school community, and I am therefore offeringParent-Guardian /Student- Child cooking classes.

Cooking classes will be this term, one day per week for 5weeks for 70minutes after school on a Tuesday afternoon from3.30pm to approx. 4.40pm.

Learning whilst ‘doing’ is the best way to build confidenceand understanding. You will explore and discuss flavours andtextures, kitchen skills, food preparation, and cookingtechniques in the classes.

Parents/Guardians will experience what it is like to work in theschool’s Home Economics kitchen and gain an understandingof what is like for our students.

Working together in your pair the hands on cooking classes willbe based around quick healthy and simple family meals and willbe taken home, so bringing a container will be a must. You willbe supplied with a cook book containing all recipes and all foodwill be provided for $50.00 per pair.

At this point I am gauging how many Parent/Guardian andChild/Student pairs are interested. I require 12 pairs for thecourse to run. Please email me an expression of interest [email protected] or phone 38134431.

Once we have enough interest a letter can be collected by yourchild/student with all details, and payment options.

RegardsTina Gilroy

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Hi all and welcome to Term 2,

PLASTIC PLASTIC PLASTIC

Our land, beaches and oceans are full of plastic waste.

Over the holidays, I have been thinking about where I canreduce my plastic waste and I chose to replace my liquidshampoo for a shampoo bar. The shampoo bar is easy topack and modest in size, lasts a long time and contains naturalingredients for healthy hair.

Did you ever think about alternatives to plastic you commonlyuse and might think you can’t live without?

There are lots of alternatives to go plastic-free around yourhome. Here are just some of the ideas:

Common

plastic used

Alternative to plastic

Art supplies Consider homemade play dough, paint, etc. (to store in glass or metal); chooseitems such as coloured pencils andcharcoal or pastels that come incardboard boxes instead of plasticcontainers

Brush, scrubor bottle

Tampico fiber or Horsehair brushes withbamboo handle

Plastic Toothbrush

Bamboo tooth brush

Lunchbox Fabric lunch bags or stainless steel

Carpet (muchof it isplastic-based)

Natural wool carpet, real wood floors, sealed concrete

Thank you, for all you effort you put in every day to make theworld a better place.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION ATSCHOOL

1. Administering medication at school

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your childat school, please contact the school office in the first instanceto discuss your child’s requirements.

Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of theAdministration of medication at school record sheet.

N.B. If your child requires more than one medication, you willneed to complete a form for each medication.

2. Requirements for students at risk ofanaphylaxis

If your child is at risk of anaphylaxis, it is important for youto provide the school with your child’s emergency medicationand their ASCIA Anaphylaxis Action Plan, completed by yourdoctor. This Anaphylaxis Action Plan provides the instructionsfor the school to administer your child’s medication in anemergency, which is specific to respond to their healthcondition.

If you have any concerns about your child’s health condition, please contact the school.

3. Requirements for students at risk of asthma

If your child has asthma and requires assistance to administertheir medication, it is important for you to provide the schoolwith your child’s emergency medication and their AsthmaAction Plan, completed by your doctor. An Asthma Action Planprovides specific instructions for the school to administer yourchild’s medication.

We recognise that some students are capable of managingtheir asthma without adult assistance. If you are confident thatyour child can confidently, competently and safelyself-administer their asthma medication, let the schooladministration know. The school will record your decision andwill not require your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Please notethat if your child requires assistance in an asthma emergency, staff will provide Asthma First Aid.

• has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner(e.g. doctor, dentist)

• is in its original container

• has an attached pharmacy label.

If you have any concerns about your child’s asthma, pleasecontact the school.

4. Providing medication to the school

Before you provide the school with your child’s medication, check the expiry date to ensure it is in-date and there is enoughfor the agreed time period. It is also a good idea to take a noteof the expiry date so that you can replace the medication beforeit expires.

Please note, school staff will not administer medication thatyou can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets(e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has beenprescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. Forexample, the school would administer paracetamol to a studentonly if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for ashort time after dental treatment.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope thatall parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.

It is safer for all students if you can provide medication tothe school in person (rather than send medication with thestudent). If you can’t provide the medication in person, contactthe school to determine the easiest and safest approach for theschool to receive the medication.

If you believe your child is capable of self-administering theirown medication at school, please contact me to discuss, asthis requires my approval.

When your child’s medication is no longer required to be keptat school, please collect all unused medication.

Thank you for your assisting the school in keeping our studentssafe and healthy.
