Dear Parents / Carers,

This week we commenced with our NAIDOC Education

Incursion by the visiting Koomurri Group. It was a great day

and students participated in a range of activities that included Aboriginal

Artefacts, weaponry, Bush Survival, art work and song and dance. Our students

had a terrific time and some of them went home with traditional Aboriginal

markings - one for boys and one for girls.

Last week, our Aboriginal students spent the day with a visiting Aboriginal artist

in preparation for the design and painting of a new mural for the wall outside

the Staffroom. These same students also spent time with Mrs O’Neil

identifying quality Aboriginal literature that we have purchased for in class use.

Thank you to both Mrs O’Neill and Mrs Thurley for organising these wonderful

events.

Today, our Cross Country runners competed at the Regional Cross Country

Championships. Zac, Nyan, Simeon, Rusty, Kai and Samuel all represented our

school and zone. Congratulations to you each on this fine achievement.

Last Tuesday, our excited Kindergarten students travelled to Calmsley Hill Farm

for a great day of learning about what it’s like to live and work on a farm. It was

a big day but all the children returned to school with wonderful stories to

share.

Congratulations also to our Student Representative Council who organised our

‘Green Day’ last week. The school was a sea of green and I know students also

Silver Awards Roy Ringrose has visited 6M this week!

6M have been involved in many exciting activities this term.

They are studying Federal Government and have been

engaged in investigating historical and present day Federal

Government and Democracy matters. They each had an Australian Prime

Minister to research and they presented wonderful speeches to their classmates

about their Prime Minister, from Edmund Barton to the current PM. They are

looking forward to seeing the portraits of their Prime Minister when they go to

Parliament House in Canberra next week.

In class we have set up a “mock” Parliament with the class sitting as “The House

of Representatives”. The students were randomly given a political party, (scaled

down from the 150 members of the House of Reps). A Prime Minister was then

elected by the majority party with the Deputy Leader coming from the National

Party. It took a lot of organising for this party election to be finalised. On the

other hand the Opposition elected their Opposition and Deputy Leader quite

quickly. (It sounded like a real Parliament). The leaders then delegated portfolios

to the Ministers and the back benchers were designated. The “House” then

voted for the Speaker, who loved saying ”Order In The House”.

We’ve dissolved Parliament and had a re-election with students taking different

roles from before.

Voting and the “passing” of bills has been a regular part of their day. The leaders

look after their party in the “House”. Each Minister has a role to fulfil. The

Minister for the Environment and Shadow Minister looks after recycling. The

Minister and Shadow Minister for Communications hand out notes and

communicate with other classes and so on.

Our class has also been studying “Earth and Space”. They are investigating

scientific facts about Earth and the “space” around it. They are looking forward

to the presentation of their projects in the last week of term. We will be joining

together with the whole of the stage to have a “Games Day”.
