Dear Parents, Congratulaons, Team Townsville! Aſter a busy yet fulfilling semester, I am delighted to share that the hard work and efforts of your children have borne fruit. In our “Townsville Gems” secon, you will read about our students who have done us proud with their achievements and accolades won at this year’s Singapore Youth Fesval, Naonal Schools Games and other plaorms. In their pursuit of excellence, these students also learn important life lessons such as perseverance, resilience, self- movaon and me management. Their achievements would not have been possible without your support and the guidance of our teachers and instructors. Let us connue to movate our children to do their best in their academic learning and CCA pursuits. Service to the Community At Townsville, we believe that students learn to serve their community best from young. Whilst our P1 and P2 students contribute within their class (e.g. by assisng their teachers and maintaining classroom cleanliness); the older pupils venture beyond the school walls. As part of our Values-in-Acon iniave, our P5 pupils befriended the elderly residents at the Lions Home @ Ang Mo Kio and Bendemeer over interacve games, sing-along sessions and origami acvies. Through these visits, our students were reminded of the realies of Singapore’s ageing populaon and more importantly, given the opportunity to touch the lives of others through simple interacons and gestures. Townsville students also parcipated acvely in the Lions Club Nanyang’s walkathon to raise funds for the laer’s beneficiaries (Lions Home for the Elders and Lions Befrienders Service Association). Through this acvity, I am heartened that our children took away the more valuable lesson of giving to the less privileged. Farewell & Appreciaon Our Vice Principal (Admin) Mr Ang Chong Yew has bidden farewell to Townsville in May. We thank him for his contribuons especially in overseeing the PERI Upgrading project and wish him the very best in his future undertakings. Communicaon A strong home-school partnership is vital for our students’ learning and development. Should you have any enquiries or feedback about your child’s experience, you may contact us at 6457 4345 (General Office) or [email protected]. Apart from your child’s form and subject teachers, you may also contact the Year Heads on maers concerning your child’s school experience (e.g. discipline and pupil wellbeing). Dear Parents,

Congratulations, Team Townsville! After a busy yet fulfilling semester, I am delighted to share that the hard work and efforts of your children have borne fruit. In our “Townsville Gems” section, you will read about our students who have done us proud with their achievements and accolades won at

this year’s Singapore Youth Festival, National Schools Games and other platforms. In their pursuit of excellence, these students also learn important life lessons such as perseverance, resilience, self-motivation and time management. Their achievements would not have been possible without your support and the guidance of our teachers and instructors. Let us continue to motivate our children to do their best in their academic learning and CCA pursuits.

Service to the Community At Townsville, we believe that students learn to serve their community best from young. Whilst our P1 and P2 students contribute within their class (e.g. by assisting their teachers and maintaining classroom cleanliness); the older pupils venture beyond the school walls. As part of our Values-in-Action initiative, our P5 pupils befriended the elderly residents at the Lions Home @ Ang Mo Kio and Bendemeer over interactive games, sing-along sessions and origami activities. Through these visits, our students were reminded of the realities of Singapore’s ageing population and more importantly, given the opportunity to touch the lives of others through simple interactions and gestures.

Townsville students also participated actively in the Lions Club Nanyang’s walkathon to raise funds for the latter’s beneficiaries (Lions Home for the Elders and Lions Befrienders Service Association). Through this activity, I am heartened that our children took away the more valuable lesson of giving to the less privileged.

Student Council Investiture 2014

32nd Upper Primary Sports MeetA morning of exhilarating races commenced at Bishan Stadium on 13 March 2014 as the Upper Primary Sports Meet kicked off with a march-past by our athletes, followed by the recitation of the Athletes’ Oath. The student spectators cheered madly for their class as the students sprinted in the various events. The event concluded with our annual Parent-Teacher tele-match and a prize presentation by our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Seet Choo Chua. The ‘Resilience’ classes emerged champion for 2014 amidst cheers of jubilation.

On 14 March 2014, a total of 160 Student Councillors from P2 to P6 were appointed in the annual Student Council Investiture. Established since 2006, the main focus of the Council is to have representatives in each class so that the students’ opinions and voices could be heard. The Council also aims to create amongst students an active interest in school affairs and community events. This year, the Student Council EXCO comprises 13 members headed by Martha Hutagalung (6 Loyalty). During her speech, our Principal Mrs Liu reminded all councillors of their responsibilities as well as the school’s expectations for them to be exemplary role models to their school-mates.

Since 2008, our school has sustained a growing partnership with our neighbour, Pathlight School – an autism-focused school that caters to both academic and life skills for children with autism. Every year, friendships are forged between Townsvillites and Pathlighters as they take part in a Recess integration programme. Our students also learn the values of respect and compassion. Ms Rachel Ho, Pathlight School’s Manager for Education Projects summed up the partnership very nicely in a note of compliment for our students:

International Friendship Day – Stories we ShareCelebrated on 4 April, this year’s International Friendship Day highlighted the importance for Singaporean students to understand and accept the cultural diversity inherent in our local context. Mdm Suzana Su’ah, Subject Head/NESS presented this during the Assembly programme.

“Our students didn’t understand how badminton is played and how to interact with the other students… But what really touched me was that some students from Townsville came to them, saying, “It’s not [played] like that, let me teach you...” and they demonstrated the game.

When our students still failed to start the game, some of the TVPS students actually did hand-over-hand teaching patiently. I* from TVPS came and approached D*, examined his racket and said, “I think your racket is not in a good condition. You can have mine, this is better”.

I thought that was really sweet of him! D successfully served one shuttlecock over the net in the end. This is not an isolated case - over the weeks many Pathlight teachers have observed, and appreciate, similar acts of friendships extended towards our students.”

EAS Day Celebrations

Townsvillites in Teck Ghee Community

On 21 April, Townsville paid tribute to our non-teaching staff, including the admin, support and cleaning personnel. Hosted by our student emcees, this year’s Executive and Administrative Staff (EAS) Concert entertained our non-teaching staff with a series of performances by our students, including a Girls Brigade Drill, and dance performances by the Chinese Dance, Indian Dance and Modern Dance groups. On behalf of the school, our principal, Mrs Liu, presented tokens of appreciation to the non-teaching staff to recognize their behind-the-scenes efforts in maintaining a conducive and clean learning environment for our students and staff.

A group of Townsville students, teachers and parents participated in Teck Ghee Community Club’s “We Love SG Flowers” Community Engagement Programme held on 27 April. Using recycled plastic bags, they made flowers to represent the love and good wishes of Singaporean individuals and families in celebration of Singapore’s 50th birthday in 2015. These flowers will be put together to form a big-scale display at the opening of the Chingay 2015.

Celebrating Roald Dahl – English Week 2014Roald Dahl (the author) came alive in Townsville during our English Week (Term 2 Week 1). Through fun and engaging classroom activities such as poetry-writing, the creating of bizarre recipes, the designing of posters; as well as assembly talks by local authors and library activities, our pupils got a chance to immerse themselves in different popular Roald Dahl stories. The highlight of the English Week was undoubtedly Dahlicious Dress Up Day – a costume parade that saw Townsvillites coming to school dressed as Matilda, the BFG, the Twits and Charlie from the Chocolate Factory, all of whom are notable characters from Dahl’s books.
