The Counselor’s Corner by Mrs. Stephens
Students often visit the counseling office for struggles with friendships. Here are some important things
for children and adults to keep in mind about making and keeping friends.
Ten Keys to Making and Keeping Friends
1. Be a friend first, if you want to have friends.
2. Give put-ups not put-downs.
3. Make others feel special by what you say and do.
4. Be honest.
5. Be a good listener.
6. Give positive encouragement when things are hard.
7. Mistakes are okay if we learn from them. Help others feel better if
they make a mistake.
8. Apologize on your own if you hurt someone’s feelings.
9. Forgive others for mistakes they make or for hurting your feelings.
10. Let your friends have other friends. Having many friends is a good thing.

Be sure to come out and celebrate WB’s 50th
Birthday at our Dancing Through the
Decades Dance on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Bring your dancing
shoes! We hope to see you there!
SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT! Looking for something to do inside on a cold winter day? Please review criti-
cal emergency information with your elementary student of any age. They
should have their full address memorized, as well as an emergency phone
number (not always a home phone, but could also be a work or cell
phone). Technology helps us in many ways, but this information is vital for
child safety.
News from the Nurses
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The winter season encourages much more time spent indoors and in close proximi-ty to one another. As a result, there is an increase in colds/flu/viruses, as well as an increase in the number of school children becoming infected with lice. First, let’s review some simple tips on keeping healthy and helping to prevent illness. Remember the '3-C's...CLEANSE...wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds, especially after cough-ing/sneezing/blowing the nose and after using the bathroom. Remember to wash hands before eat-ing. COVER...teach your child to use a tissue when possible to cover a sneeze or cough. If a tissue is not available, show your child how to sneeze/cough into the crook of their elbow. CON-TAIN...Steer clear of people who are obviously sick. Please do not send your child to school if he/she has a fever of 100.0 or higher, or is vomiting or having diarrhea. When sick children come to school, they are not only exposing others to illness, but they are at risk due to a weakened immune system.
On the prevention of lice, the following suggestions are: 1) Long hair should be placed in a ponytail/braid or bun, everyday. When long hair is not contained, it may easily touch the hair of a classmate who may have lice. 2) Discourage the sharing of hats/headbands/combs/brushes. 3) Encourage your child to keep their head away from other students' heads (keeping a personal space.) 4) Beware of sleepovers, especially if you know of cases of lice. 5) Check your child's head on a daily basis, especially if they are complaining of an itchy scalp. Look for evidence of tiny nits (eggs) especially at the base of the neck and behind the ears. 6) If your child has lice, please notify the school nurse. Your privacy will be respected. For more information on lice, please consult with your Healthcare Provider or www.cdc.gov . Thank you. Mrs. Baldwin & Mrs. Sculli
Health and PE news… Friday, February 10, 2017 will be our annual Jump Rope for Heart
event. Last year we raised a $11,536…a West Bradford record! We are hoping to
top that this year with a goal of $12,500. All students will participate in this
event, regardless if they bring in a donation. We can always use extra volunteers
to help that day with organizing donations, face painting, and turning ropes. We
are taking a slightly different approach this year so students can earn certain
prizes (the zoo animals) as they collect online donations. All students should have
already received their collection envelope, a save the date paper, a parent infor-
mation letter with online donation directions on the back, a heart to color and re-
turn, and a lanyard with a lion attached. Students are reminded to wear sneakers
as well as the color RED in support of the event. As always, we are looking for-
ward to a fun-filled day with plenty of exercise while supporting the American
Heart Association. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Home and School News…
Happy February! As we begin our second half of the 2016-2017 school year, I want to
take the time to thank everyone for helping at our many events we have had to this
point. Our fall and winter classroom parties were a lot of fun for all of the students.
Our Jog-A-Thon, book fair, and Monster Bash were huge successes. Box Tops for Ed-
ucation and feeding our Bot Box was a hit, and we were able to help many families in
our own West Bradford community with Project Feast and Assist-a- Wish. We are
lucky that our hearts can be full as we start the second half of this school year. Look-
ing ahead, we have some fun activities to look forward to. February we will celebrate
our 50th Birthday at our Dancing Through the Decades Dance, Jump Rope for
Heart, Spring Fair and Field Day, to name a few. Keep your eye open for communica-
tions for these events in backpacks, as well as information on Facebook and via email.
From our hearts to yours,
WBH&S - Jenni, Stephanie, Christina, Michelle, Heidi and Larissa
A VERY COOL OPPORTUNITY…..FOR PARENTS!!
Parents and guardians are invited to join the DASD Parent Book Club and Discussion Group. The first
book we will read will be Jessica Lahey's best-seller - The Gift of Failure. A book club discussion will
take place on Monday, March 27, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:30 in the STEM Academy. A light supper will be
provided at 6:00 p.m. Although the event is free, you are asked to pre-register so we know how many
will be attending to better plan for the evening. Visit the district website to register. (On the image
rotator, scroll through until you see the picture of the book and click on the image to register.)
The Gift of Failure looks at those critical school years when we as parents must force ourselves to let
our children experience the disappointment and frustration that occur from life's inevitable prob-
lems. We want them to grow up to be successful, resilient, and self-reliant adults but how many times
have we all thought it best if we "helped" them? Providing a path toward solutions, Ms. Lahey lays
out a blueprint in this book with targeted advice for handling homework, report cards, social dynamics,
and sports and sets forth a plan to help parents learn to step back and embrace their children's fail-
ures. It's a great read and I hope you will join us at the book club event.
We will also very fortunate to be able to have Ms. Lahey join us in the district on April 3, 2017 to dis-
cuss her book and share stories of her life as a former middle school teacher. An evening with Jessica
Lahey will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. on April 3, 2017 in the DHS West Auditorium. No regis-
tration is needed for the Lahey visit.
