It is so important that you take the time to encourage your children to read, to read with them or to just read to them and let them enjoy the journey. Thank you to Mrs McMahon for coordinating this event again for us, it is a huge job but one I know she loves. As this is our tenth anniversary year I have had our time capsule opened and the contents will be on display in the library for students to have a look at during breaks. There will also be a slide show of photos from 2008 and a couple of short videos. It was hilarious reading what our students and staff thought they would be doing this year, some were very accurate and some were just so different. In my case I predicted I would be retired and that the Blues would have a win in the Origin, wish I had of predicted that the Blues would win for another ten years! You are more than welcome to pop into the library, when it is open, and have a look at the items that were in our time capsule. Road safety has been raised again as three of our students were nearly hit by a car as they travelled to school. The students were not concentrating on what they should have been doing and were riding in a dangerous manner. Thankfully the parent concerned was driving slowly and was able to stop and avoid a collision. I have asked the teachers to remind all students of the need to be focused and safe when travelling to and from school. I would ask that you take the time to also remind your children of the importance of road safety too. On that note, just a reminder that the bus lane is for the buses and for day care services. Please do not drive into the bus lane either before or after school, our children are precious and we want to keep them safe. In relation to the Principal position at Park Lake, the role has been advertised and a permanent replacement Principal should be appointed to commence in term four, as long as the applicant pool is of an appropriate quality. This is a great thing for our school, long term acting Principals have been shown to be destabilising for schools, as such I have agreed to be un-attached from the school so that a permanent appointment can be made as soon as possible. I will keep you informed of any decisions in relation to this process. Have a great fortnight. Regards Craig Larden Principal

A CHAT WITH…MRS LENNOXHello Everyone

Over the past two weeks Miss Docker andthe Bradman class have beenparticipating in a trial using iPads in theclassroom on a one to one basis. Studentengagement has escalated as students arekeen to capture their knowledge andlearning, and have had the capacity to

share this with their parents through the use of the See SawApp. I have personally been able to view every individual’sprocess, which is an exciting element for a Deputy Principalwho often only has limited time to be in the context of theclassroom. Great job Miss Docker. We look forward toimplementing this opportunity for other students in the nearfuture.

Our Prep students will be involved in their swimming programin the last two weeks of this term. Please make sure that yourchild has their swimmers, goggles, swim cap and towel readyfor each and every day. This program is vitally important tocreate students who are water wise and confident however itdoes have a significant impact on their school day. Be mindfulthat they will be tired and their daily routine will be changedwhich can arouse a range of emotions. Thanks in advance, foryour support during this time.

Book Character Parades: WOW

Mrs McMahon once again our parade was awesome. Thisweek in our calendar is always enjoyable as we recognise theimportance of reading. Our students and staff looked amazing, more and more students each year celebrate by joining in.Thanks again Mrs McMahon and Ms Stevenson. Well done.To all our staff that supported this extra-curricular activity, thanks for your time, extra effort and ‘going beyond the call ofduty’. Everyone looked fantastic.

As our term is beginning to draw to a close please be mindful ofstudent’s tendency to exhibit signs of fatigue. Their well-beingand state of mind are aspects that we need to monitor closelyfor learning to continue right up until the end of term as studentsneed to be in a positive state. As parents, make sure your childis getting adequate quality sleep, nutritional meals, drinkingplenty of water and are provided with consistent reminders oflove and affection. Without the basic necessities it is difficultfor us all to reach goals, make appropriate choices, remainfocused and concentrate on the job of learning. So often whenwe look at all the aspects of why people are behaving in aparticular way we discover that these basics had not been metand could have made a significant difference to the outcomeswe often are confronted with here at school.

Thank you for your continued support with regards to thismatter.

This past week our teachers were involved in a school basedmoderation process which has given them the opportunity toassess student’s work samples. Their professional discussionsare in relation to certain criteria which results in them allocatingan A-E grading for a particular piece of work. It is always avaluable process as it ensures consistency across the schoolfor our students. These are then used along with othersupporting evidence to report on your child’s progress for thesemester of work, which you will receive as a formal reportcard at the end of this year. This process ensures that there isconsistency across the year level.

As 2019 is fast approaching and we have already commencedplanning for our new preps for next year, please be remindedthat if you or you know someone that has the intention ofenrolling their child/ren at Park Lake State School, encouragethem to do so now as this enables us to plan ahead. Wedo have an enrolment management plan which states thatyou must live within our boundary, so remind them to checkour website. Our Prep Orientation Day is to be held onWednesday 21 November. Please contact Administration on5519 5200 or [email protected] if you have anyquestions in regards to our enrolment process.

We have a special staff here in the Prep – Year 1 Sectorand they create opportunities that do not exist in some otherschools. I think that is special and what makes our schoolgreat. A huge THANKS to ALL the P-1 STAFF for this term.I have really appreciated how everyone has ‘worked tough’and maintained enthusiasm, passion and commitment towardseach other, our students, families and community over thistime. Enjoy your break, it is well deserved. Thanks to the parent

Finally I would like to acknowledge Mr Larden’s commitment tocreating an awesome school over the past 11 years. I would liketo thank him for the opportunities I have personally had, whilsthe has been Principal of this school. I wish him well in his futurelife journey.

Only twenty days to go of term three. Enjoy!

SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING

Year 4

It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of Term Three. Wehave had a fantastic start to the term.

In English, students have been enjoying reading and analysingthe quest novel, Rowan of Rin. Throughout the unit, studentshave been posting comments and responding to others'comments in a discussion board. In the coming days, studentswill also begin to write a short response explaining how theauthor represents the main character in an important event inthe quest novel.

In Mathematics, students have been working hard on theirfraction knowledge. They have learnt to locate familiar fractionson a number line and recognise common equivalent fractionsin familiar contexts. They are continuing to master theirmultiplication and division facts. For the remainder of the termstudents will compare areas of regular and irregular shapesusing informal units. They will use scaled instruments tomeasure temperature, mass, capacity and length. Students willthen use simple strategies to reason and solve a measurementinquiry question.

In Science, students have been exploring natural processesand human activity that cause weathering and erosion of theEarth's surface. They will relate this to their local area, make

observations and predict consequences of future occurrencesand human activity. All classes have been involved in ahands-on experiment where they used our sand pit toinvestigate the impact of erosion on sand dunes.

In HASS, students are learning about sustainability and usingplaces in a sustainable way. They will identify how places arecharacterised by their environments and describe thecharacteristics of places, including the types of naturalvegetation and native animals. Students will examine theinterconnections between people and environment and theimportance of environments to animals and people. This topichas started a number of engaging and thought provokeddiscussions, which is exciting to hear.

A reminder about our upcoming bike safety day: Permissionslips have been emailed out to all families and the payment of$5.00 for this excursion is due by 9.30am Wednesday 29thAugust 2018.

Have a lovely fortnight.

Year 4 Team

YOU CAN DO IT! PROGRAM

“RESILIENCE – one of the keys tosuccess”

The Emotional Thermometer

The Emotional Thermometer is a tool to beused to encourage resilient thinking. People

have options in how upset (angry, down, worried) they become when faced with

adverse incidents. While becoming“medium” upset is normal and indeed often helpful when

something adverse happens to someone, getting to the top ofthe Emotional Thermometer is rarely helpful and often harmfulin that when you are extremely upset, you say and do things

that often make the problem worse.
