FROM THE PROVINCIAL

Scarcity vs. Abundance Mentality

Your mindset is what matters most. When we look around, we are amazed by the fact that so many of us are ruled by a scarcity mentality in contrast to an abundance mindset. And think of all the blessings we lose sight of. And that will probably answer some of the questions we have about our own effectiveness.

I look around and see the abundance that surrounds us. The goodwill that the Jesuit brand carries, the necessary infrastructural facilities, the number of people - friends, relatives, collaborators- who are willing to be part of our mission.

I am just back from a visit, my maiden one, to AADI Attappadi. It is turning out to be an amazing place. You can touch the blue sky from its hill top. The divine just hovers over you so powerfully. How can we fail to see the abundance in that one space alone?

This is a real challenge. Can we root out the scarcity mentality and fill our minds and hearts with an abundance mindset. Stephen Covey has something very down to earth and practical to say about how to harness the power of abundance mentality.

So too, let us build a culture of appreciation. We are eager to criticize, but slow to appreciate.

‘It is imperfection that complains of imperfection. Perfection is more compassionate’.

More than ever we need to live the prayer for Generosity by St. Ignatius and the prayer for Peace by St. Francis of Assisi.

THE QUESTThe recent Art exhibition titled ‘The Quest’ by Fr Roy Thottam made headlines in Kochi, with rave reviews by art enthusiasts. In August, for about a week Roy exhibited 60 paintings under the theme Quest, in the Durbar Hall, in Kochi, displaying the fruit of his labour over the past five years.

The overall theme of the 60 odd paintings is the inner quest, a quest for something as wide and all encompassing as the meaning of life itself,

or something as deep and personal as a cause or a belief close to one’s heart.

Roy has had already 11 exhibitions, including two in England and Germany. He has plans for the next exhibition-a series of paintings on the book ‘Song of Songs’, environmental protection and other social issues. Congrats Roy!

‘AUDIOVISUAL RETREAT-THE IGNATIAN WAY’George Sebastian has hit the headlines with his ‘Swara-Chitra-Raga-Sudha’ retreats in the Kohima region. The novel retreat has won applause for its ‘new and creative manner and it helped the scholastics to look at and respond to their Jesuit call and commitment in a more creative way’……, “Fr.George Sebastian has demonstrated a beautiful model of retreats needed for today’s media-saturated world with convincing clarity of vision and purpose.” The Jivan Issue of August 2014 carries a full report on the programme. Do have a look at it. Congrats George!KHANDMAL DAY CELEBRATED

suspension. We celebrated the Independence Day with traditional gaiety and pomp in the school. Fr Biju George attended a week long training programme for the resource persons of Malayalam Language in Ernakulam. He will be one of the resource persons to train higher secondary Malayalam teachers in Wayanad district. Fr Salvin gave an orientation programme for the teachers of Christu Raja School, Malaparamba. He also conducted a workshop on formation for the General, her team, all the provincials and novice mistresses of FCC sisters in Calicut. The construction work of the tribal boarding house and the school auditorium is in full swing in spite of the heavy rains. The candidates are faring well in the school and they are getting ready for home visit during Onam holidays. 25 of our Scouts and Guides got Rajya Puraskar award which is the highest number in Wayanad district. Our Higher Secondary section also got Scout and Guide wings. Thus ours may be the biggest scout and guide wing in the whole of Wayand district. Kudos to Fr Wilson!

SalvinLOYOLA, ALUVA The month of August was one of celebrations and grace. We have commenced the neighborhood ministry in the Colony nearby. We are hopeful that it will help us to continue a healthy relationship with them. It was a graceful month, as the first year novices attended the Indian Contemplative Retreat guided by Fr. Sebastian Painadath. The fruit of this retreat is slowly and steadily making a difference in their lives. The second year novices attended the charismatic retreat at Muringoor and learned new methods of praying.Fr Sanil attended the ordination of Fr. Santhosh and Fr. Jose Jacob attended the first Mass. On 6th August, Fr. Santhosh celebrated his first mass in the Latin rite here in Loyola in the presence of a distinguished guest from London, Fr. Andrew, mentor and professor of Fr. Santhosh. We celebrated Fr. Andrew’s birth day too as it fell on that very day. On the 27th of the month, we had a get-together and dinner with our neighbours from the colony in honor of Fr. Santhosh. The Independence Day was celebrated in a fitting manner. Our neighbors also joined us. Rojas Thomas delivered a power-packed message at the flag hoisting ceremony.

victims . A group of over 100 activists and religious gathered expressed their concern over the fact that justice is still denied to the victims of 2008 riots. The Keynote address by Dr. Khadeja Mumtaz, a popular and committed activist from the Muslim community, generated much interest. She argued that unlike in the case of Gujarat Riots, or post Babri Masjid demotion, or the Sikh riots, the Khandmal victims hardly received any coverage or aid. Prof. Jayaprakash Raghaviah, a noted historian and Church of South India Board member challenged the Christian Community to ask themselves why they were not protected by the Hindu community. A personal sharing from Sr. Linda who is an eye witness to the violence in 2008 gave the meeting a touch of the real. SRC plans to continue this collaboration with the Secular Forum and organize similar discourses.

AKJM, KANJIRAPALLYOnam examinations are going on and the school will close for holidays on 5th September. We were happy to have the graceful presence of our newly ordained Fr. Joseph Mathew, Dn. Binu, Dn. Sooraj and sch. Deepak with the community. Fr Joe Mathew was also in Samanvaya making his retreat under the guidance of Fr Malpan. The Centre for Ignatian Spirituality will be conducting a seminar on 27th September on ‘Ignatian Spirituality and Discernment.’ Fr M J Augustine is undergoing treatment after an MRI scan that showed congestion in his neck bones.

We were in deep shock when one of our students lost her life following a suicide attempt. Two of the newly admitted girls to the Plus One science batch consumed poison on the 11th August. These girls were found missing from the school that day and it was immediately reported to the parents. While the parents were in search of their daughters, the police found them exhausted and struggling for life after consuming poison near the bus stand at Kanjirapally. One of them died on the way to the hospital and the other is back to normal health. Following the incident a few men were arrested and many were questioned for underworld racketing and for immoral trafficking of these girls a few times earlier. The officials and many of our friends and well-wishers admired the fact that it was wise from the part of the school administration to have informed the parents about their absence.

Ramlat ThomasST MICHAEL’S, KANNURThe 150th Anniversary Logo of St Michael’s AIHSS, Kannur was released by Sri Manjalamkuzhy Ali, Minister for Rural Development on August 15th, the Independence Day. MARYMATHA MAJOR SEMINARY

Ms Munira Beebi, seventh candidate under my guidance and first from Kannur University defended her thesis and University of Kannur awarded Doctoral degree to her thesis. The eighth one, Mr C Sasikumar is awaiting the report from the external examiners. There are another six

more in Kerala and Kannur Universities registered for Ph.D. under my guidance

I am busy engaged in various activities of the Seminary and the Diocese. As executive Director of Pastoral Animation, Research and Out Reach (PAROC), we have initiated a participatory self- awareness research programme in three parishes on an experimental basis. Parishioners themselves prepared the questionnaire, administered it, and they made the data entry and analysed the data. Later on they will prioritise the felt- needs of the parish to start with the action programme. Both the Vicar and the Parishioners have shown great enthusiasm towards the project. Besides, I Chair the evaluation Committee for the Social work projects of the Diocese.

In the seminary I take classes to philosophers on Introduction to Sociology and Marxism each consisting of two credits each. Deacons and sub-Deacons attend my classes in socio Pastoral Research Methodology. The course involves field-work experience too. I am involved in the project paper preparation of eight theologians and five philosophers. Twenty seven seminarians from Theology and Philosophy seek my help in spiritual guidance. In a docile community one feels much more relaxed and hence enthused to serve more diligently.

I directed a retreat for the Priests of the Adilabad Diocese which was a part of Chanda Diocese where I gave a Directed retreat to the priests in 1977 while I was doing my doctorate in Mumbai. Some of the priests still kept the memory of the 1977 retreat. I gave another retreat to Canossian sisters at Kottagiri. I was invited as resource person for the renewal and planning session of the O’ Carm Fathers at Aluva. I gave orientation talks to Directors and Rectors of Seminaries under Latin Dioceses of Kerala at Carmelgiri Seminary, Aluva on Social work in the seminary set up. Happy Onam to all

community members of Inigo Sadan. The college going Scholastics had a meaningful Independence Day celebration as they went out to a nearby slum to celebrate it. After hoisting the flag students of St. Joseph’s College and Mount Carmel College put up a cultural programme. A few students from the slum performed a dance which raised our hearts to patriotism. We also visited a few houses and met a lot of people. Our hearts swelled with joy and gratitude for their welcoming attitude and hospitality. Thanks to Sch. P. V Joseph for shouldering this responsibility and offering a wonderful experience in each one of our lives.

Being the jubilee year of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus there was a talk by Fr Jossie D’ Mello arranged for the Bangalore zone Jesuits on the community life of early Jesuits and a brief biography of the first companions of St. Ignatius. On the same day three Jesuits of Karnataka professed their final vows. We were indeed happy to meet so many Jesuits of Karnataka.

Scholastics attended an inter-religious Eid celebration in Ahirvad, a centre for inter- religious dialogue. The sessions on the importance of Eid and Islam in general were simply amazing and heart-warming. At the end we had a special Eid biriyani.

In the college we had Prathiba fest. It is an inter class competition. Many Scholastics showcased their talents in many events.

Happy Onam to all!Jithin

SATYA NILAYAM, CHENNAI

The Bi-Centenary of the Restoration of the Society was celebrated in Satya Nilayam seven days after the Feast of our Founder. We postponed the major activities of the Feast of St Ignatius to mark this important event. Nearly 200 guests - priests, religious and lay people - from different places where we go for our weekly ministries joined us on the occasion for a short prayer service followed by a cultural programme and dinner. A quiz competition on St Ignatius and the Society of Jesus was conducted for the outsiders. The Community organized a basketball tournament among the

living groups. Fr Francis Xavier (LICET, Loyola) and Fr Job (JDV) came to teach Philosophy of Science.

The month of August also witnessed the election of new office bearers of the Community. And we are happy to have Sch. Rosan Roy as the new Beadle of the community. We were glad to welcome Fr Anto Muringathery, the PCF, the first among the PCFs to visit in this academic year. Along with Fr Shibu Malekunnel, who is busy with his research, we had a fun-filled gathering too.

AdhulFROM THE CHINESE PROVINCE

Besides giving regular classes and correcting the compositions(as well as some other written assignments of the students here), I was invited to many special occasions - the Diamond Jubilee Mass and celebrations of our Mary the Queen Parish, with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as Main Celebrant; Mass and homily on August 27, the 10th Anniversary of my first landing in Mainland China); Homily at the Ordination of five new Priests by Bishop Leo Tumulak, Bishop of the Philippines Armed Forces, Police Force, Prison Management, Fire Force and Coastguards. My time here in the Philippines is running out. After my last class on September 12, I will again spend time with Bishop Leo. He will drop me at the airport and I will be back in Taipei for supper. Our new academic year there begins on September 15. Even if it was for a short time, I was delighted to meet our Sebastian Painadath at EAPI (East Asian Pastoral Institute).

John FJ Manipadam FROM ROME

I arrived in Rome at 3 am on 3rd August. Schs. Joji Babu (AND) and Selvam (MDU) were there at the airport to receive me. As soon as we reached Gesù, Sch. Joji took me to St. Ignatius’ room which is now converted into a chapel. It was a deep spiritual experience for me being there and I prayed for our province and its various apostolates. Since all the first year theologians had already left for Genova for Italian language course, I was all alone at Gesù on the 3rd and thus Fr. Orlando Torres, the Rector

of Gesù, took me to the St. Peter’s Basilica and our Curia to pay a quick visit. The street from Gesù to Vatican gave me a little glimpse of the ancient city, Rome, which reminded me of the antiquities, the Renaissance and the beginnings of baroque art, about which I had only read in the novels during my college days. On the 4th afternoon, I left for Genova to join my companions for the Italian language course. Our stay there was at Casa di Ignazio, which is the novitiate house of the Italian province. The Fathers and the novices there were very generous and in a literal way, we experienced the glory and the greatness of the universality of the Society. Now, we are back again to Rome to do our second phase of the Italian course from 1st of September. I thank my provincials, the PCF, and all the members of our province for supporting and encouraging me to have an experience of the eternal city, Rome and proceed with my studies here.
