“Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing...” (https://www.mindful.org/what-is-mindfulness/)
The alarm clock goes off, we all wake up in the morning and we go on with our business as usual.
We clean ourselves, take a shower, brush our teeth, look out through the window, get dressed, have breakfast, etc.
These morning rituals go on unnoticed by ourselves, we are in automatic mode like when we drive on the road and we are so immersed in our thoughts that we arrive to our destination without even knowing what streets we took.
Without really being aware every day, we are waking up in the morning, opening our eyes and realizing that we are alive. We take it for granted, but we shouldn’t. One could argue that Jewish tradition “invented” mindfulness.
The Talmud (Brachot 60b) teaches the following:
“When waking up from sleep, before washing hands, one should say:
I am thankful before You, living and enduring King, for you have mercifully restored my soul within me. Great is Your faithfulness.”
In Talmudic and mystical literature lack of consciousness is compared to death. As we are not conscious during our sleep, we manifest our gratitude for having our senses restored when we wake up. The list of Jewish mindfulness blessings can be found in all the prayer books. It is called Birkot Hashachar (Siddur Sim Shalom p.65). It contains mentions to our Jewish heritage, to our condition of divine creatures, our freedom, our ability to see, our blessings of having clothing, of having our needs being taken care of, restoring our strength and vigor.
The list also contains references to our “national mindfulness,” to the things that we take for granted on a national level like crowning the people of Israel (namely the Jewish people) with glory and strengthening it with courage. It contains cosmic universal references as well: the creation of heavens and earth, the succession of night and day.
In the same tractate the Talmud also states that the ideal time for prayer is close to the sunrise and close to the sunset and the ideal place is outdoors because being outdoors at those times generate a state of awe and appreciation for the creation and its creator. From the beginning to the end of our days, our millenary tradition is proposing us to take on a mindfulness journey; to count our blessings and not take the universe for granted or our own existence and survival for granted.
3rd Grade: Laura has taught us what it means to miss the mark and that it’s okay for the year in preparation for Yom Kip-pur. We’ve created flags for Simchat Torah dancing and can’t wait to begin learning Hebrew! Look at us with Tibi in music.
4th Grade: Grade bonding has been a big emphasis for Rachel and Dara. We’ve started our class with some grade-wide icebreakers that emphasize the middot (Jewish values) of being kind and teamwork. Check us out trying to untangle this giant web!
5th Grade: The immigration from Eastern Europe to America has been our focus thus far. Shai has led our 5th graders in the exploration of family and where our roots started. In November we’ll be visiting Ellis Island to see history with our own eyes.
6th Grade: Our 6th graders with Mazal are building a base for B’nei Mitzvah. With a mix of games, studying the parsha, He-brew and review of the holidays, our year is off to a great start!
7th Grade: In each session we’ve started off with a game and each has hidden Jewish values in them, one was how our words may be taken differently by different people, another demonstrating how to work as a community towards a common goal. Besides that we’ve looked at different names for God and how they make us feel, and we’ve begun to look at Christianity and Islam and how they are intertwined with the Torah.
LETTER FROM SETHThe Kehillah year started off with a bang at the Kickoff Carnival! All students enjoyed the ‘make your own ice cream sundae bar’ and huge inflatables. We also set an unofficial World Record for the Largest First Day of School Selfie!
Each class, every session has music with Tibi and Tefillah with the Cantor. This gives the students more access to learning through music than ever before. Our curriculum can also be supplemented by our specialists, especially with our grade Tefillah goals. Here is a check-in from each grade:
Kindergarten: Our Kindergartners are loving spending their Sunday mornings with Silvia. Each time, we start with Havdalah, then have time on our carpet to get to know each other. We’ve talked all about the shofar on Rosh Hashanah and how we dance with the Torah on Simchat Torah. Pictured here is our prep for Simchat Torah dancing!
1st Grade: In Stacey’s class we’ve been working on a lot of crafts. We’ve learned about how giving cards during the High Holy Day season is such a special thing. Shaking the lulav in the TCS Sukkah was a big highlight too!
2nd Grade: 2nd grade is off to a great start with Shari! We dived right in to learning about the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and what it means to repent, now we are going into the story of creation, Bereshit!

PRESCHOOL NEWS Our school year continues to be filled
with wonder and joy. The children are now settled into familiar routines and
I can’t help but smile as I spend time in each classroom. I see children engaged,
joyful, productive and nurtured. Each classroom has its own feel and style, yet there are many common threads that include respect for children and respect for the developmental process. Our teachers are experts at knowing when to facilitate, when to guide and when to step back and observe. It is just as important to know when to be “a fly on the wall” as it is to know when to intervene. Just the other day I was observing a teacher doing something we call “self-talk.” She was working with a child who is learning to identify colors and instead of asking questions like “What color is that?” she played alongside the child saying, “I’m going to use the red playdough to make some meatballs right now.” The child immediately got involved and the teacher accomplished her goal of engaging the child and working on color identification in a fun, nonthreatening manner through play. The way we communicate our thoughts to the children in our care sets the tone for an environment of respect and creates opportunities for learning throughout the preschool day.
The holiday season is fast approaching, and I wanted to share some tips from an article I read that resonated with me as a mom, an educator and a grandmother! We all love our children and often we indulge them, and quite frankly overindulge, which leads to a playroom filled with “naked barbie dolls and discarded toys.” In her article “6 Tips for Taking Back Your Playroom,” Kitty Lascurain came up with a plan that is very similar to what we do here at TCS Preschool.
Tip #1: Rotate Toys: Early childhood educators know the secret of rotating toys. We have been doing this for years and if you haven’t tried it I highly suggest it. A well-organized toy rotation accomplishes several things, including elimination of clutter and ensuring that your child won’t become bored by playing with the same toys over and over again.
Tip #2: Put Toys on Display: This is something else we do in preschool: we create centers or play stations. For example, we have a kitchen area, a building area, a costume area, an art area, a library area. This allows us to put toys on display, so the children can see what is there without having to dump out a big toy box or bin. We also set up little “provocations” to peak the children’s interest and use toys in different ways.
Tip #3: Make Books Visually Accessible: In the library use books rails instead of book shelves. If you display fewer books and have their covers visible, children have an easier time making choices. Presentation is “everything.” When toys and books are organized they are much more appealing. Think about this: as adults we typically enjoy shopping in stores that have items displayed in visually attractive and intentional ways that are uncluttered and easy to get to.
Tip #4: Become a Minimalist! Buy fewer toys and ask relatives to think about “a family experience” rather than always giving gifts. I am trying this with my own grandchildren and we are really loving it (and so are they!). In Lascurain’s article she referred to an oldVictorian saying: Buy your little one “something they want, something they need; something to play with, and something to read.”
Tip #5: Donate! Bring the mitzvah of tzedakah into your home by allowing your children the opportunity to donate toys they have outgrown or no longer play with to a preschool or charity. This accomplishes decluttering and a valuable teaching opportunity at the same time.
Tip #6: Make Informed Choices: We are all guilty of buying the latest trendy toy but in general, when choosing toys to purchase, it is a good rule of thumb to buy toys that encourage creative thinking, teamwork and imaginative play.

A long-time friend of our former Youth Director, Annie Glasser, Berina has already hit the ground running! She is from St. Paul, Minnesota and was very active in her USY chapter and region there. She moved to New York after graduating from McGill University where she studied Interna-tional Relations and Middle East Studies. She currently is a Program Assistant for Eshel, a Jewish non-profit that works with LGBTQ Orthodox Jews.
Berina loves all things outdoors, watching detective TV shows, and USY ruach! She is most looking forward to getting to know all of you at TCS and making USY an inclu-sive and fun kehillah. Contact her at [email protected].
Elliot KleinNov 10My name is Elliot Klein and I am an eighth grader at Bedford Middle School. I play
soccer for the Westport Soccer U14/15 White travel team, usually at mid-field. I also row at the Saugatuck Rowing Club.
I go to camp for two and 1/2 weeks every summer at Camp Moosilauke in Orford, New Hampshire. This summer I climbed Mt. Lafayette. My immediate family includes my mother Camilla, my father Tom, and my brother Ben.
For my Tikkun Olam project, I went to Saugatuck Elementary School to help dismantle a playground that was later sent to kids in Africa who don’t have access to a playground. This project really made me think about how lucky I am to live in Westport and to have access to anything I could ever want.
Last of all, I would love to say a big thank you to my family, Debbie Smolka, Rabbi Wiederhorn, and Cantor Cattan for teaching me and supporting me along this journey.

Middlebrook Middle School in Wilton.
I love painting, Odyssey of the Mind, dance and volunteering at Ambler Farm. My favorite subjects at school are math and science. My favorite time of the year is summer, when I get to live at Camp Ramah Palmer with my camp friends. The rest of the year I live with my mother, father, brothers Avi and Noam, my puppy Tali, and my two cats Midnight and O’Malley.
For my tikkun olam projects, I volunteer at Ambler Farm and tutor in math. I study modern Hebrew with Judy Wilkins, and I look forward to visiting Israel with my family in December in celebration of my bat mitzvah. I would like to thank Deb-bie Smolka, Cantor Cattan and Rabbi Wiederhorn for helping me to prepare for my bat mitzvah.
IsabelleBlendDec 15Hi my name is Isabelle Blend. I go to Coleytown Middle School and I am in
eighth grade this year. I have an older brother, Logan, who is in 10th grade. My parents, Michele and Michael are so supportive of me and have helped me to become who I am today.
I love to play soccer and currently I am on the CFC Arsenal team. In the sum-mers, I go to Camp Westmont in Penn-sylvania with my brother and my mom (she is the Culinary Arts Director there). My dad visits every weekend. I love my camp friends and it has been fun cele-brating their b’nei mitzvah this year.
As some might know, I love animals and I love to help people with disabilities. So, for my mitzvah project, I wanted to combine them together and try and help both. I am working with Guiding Eyes for the Blind and have attended some of their puppy trainings. I have decided to help make dog toys for the dogs to use in training. My goal is to make around 100. And, with help from my friends and family, I know I will be able to get that goal accomplished. I would like to thank Rabbi Wiederhorn, Cantor Cattan, and Silvia Cattan for help-ing me prepare for my Bat Mitzvah day.
