Pride, cont. from front There were 11 promotions. “They are the future of the police department,” said Farrar. The department also presented the results of the PRIDE platoon. The platoon is a 14 week interven- tion program for at risk youth held twice a year. They are taught dis- cipline, respect, integrity and pride in themselves. For the youth who last through the whole program it has been life changing. “It’s been a huge, huge success,” said newly promoted Lt. Dean Hardin. There were two testimonies to that success, Carmen Tinoco and Ramona Andrade. Tinoco was a youth in the pro- gram. She said before the program she was very angry, would get into fights, disrespected her mother and ditched school. Now she says she has her anger under control and is able to talk out her problems. In fact she teaches kickboxing. She not only goes to school every day but gets their early and spends time in the attendance office where she has become friends with the office workers there. She also has a better relationship with her mother and family. “Now I feel that nothing can stop me from reaching my goal,” said Tinoco. The council and entire chamber gave her a standing ova- tion for her achievements. She was not sure that the program would work but she knew she had to enroll him. “After the first weekend I got my son back,” said Andrede in tears. She says her son is doing well in school and says ‘yes ma’am’ when she ask him to do something. “It gave not only my son peace but it gave my family peace,” she said.
