FROM THE EDITOR.

Leaves are falling, we have had our first frost, tons of Dogberries..and some of us hardy souls are still getting in the odd round of golf. Life is Good!! Trust everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. The highlight of the Social Calendar for October, was our Annual Dinner and Dance which took place on October 26th ad Div. HQ. Mess. All who attended enjoyed a great meal and danced the night away to great music. A more complete report along with the Calendar of Events is contained in the Social Committee page.

Our happy times in life are so often interspersed with sad times and September/October seemed to have our share of sad times as we received reports of comrades and family members having passed on or fallen ill. Our sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones and a speedy recovery to those who

have to deal with their various medical issues.

Plans are underway for a group of Veterans to “motor west” from St. John’s on November 10th, to visit veteran groups and detachments along the way and then take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies in Deer Lake. Hope to have a report in the November Newsletter.

Thanks again to District Representatives, Executive, Committee Chairs and members who have provided items for this edition and a reminder to everyone to forward any stories, reports or items of interest to the membership.

Cheers!

DISTRICT REPORTS –

Gander/Lewisporte District

(by Ken Chatman – District Rep.)

There was a gathering once again, 14 in total, at the Country Kitchen in the Gander Mall. There were several housekeeping items to deal with and most of that was done prior to the arrival of MP Scott Simms. There was a strong hint from Claude Elliott that there would be a turr supper later in the fall/early winter. He did state however, that the turrs are still on the wing. Maybe he’s counting Turrs before they’re shot!!!

Scott drops by once in a while for a general and relaxing chit chat and a few laughs. Vets in attendance included Eric Murray, Paul Hitchcock, Lindsay Fraser, Eddie Philpott, Len Snook, Roy Luscombe, Joe McGuire, Don Caravan, Bob Healey, Earl Roddick, Jerry O’Brien, Honorary Vet Claude Elliott, MP Scott and the undersigned. Scott picked up the tab. Thanks.

The 25th Annual Eastport Agricultural Parade took place on October 12th and we had a total of twenty Vets and serving members involved. Joe McGuire led the troops past the Grand Stand at the town hall where Supt. Jeff Hunter took the salute. We had two more members than last year and at this rate we’ll have a full troop in about six years. There were regular members from Glovertown Detachment and Vets from St. John’s area, Gander, Glovertown and Culls Harbour. The temps were a little cool with the wind NW but once the parade got underway, it soon warmed up. Overall it was a nice day weather wise. A number of the Vets brought their spouses along to take advantage of the craft fair at Holy Cross School and an hearty meal of pea soup at the S.U.F. Hall.

Clarenville District

(by Len Stratton - District Rep.)

The funeral for S/Sgt. Edward W. Doupe #18940 Ret’d was held in Clarenville on October 10th at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Regular members and Veterans turned out to support the family and to show our respect for Ed. The funeral included family, friends and members of the Royal Canadian Legion of which Ed was a long time member. The Clarenville Area RCMP Veterans Group wishes to thank all the members and veterans who turned out for

the funeral. Our appreciation and the family’s appreciation are extended to those who attended from Clarenville, Glovertown, Gander and St. John’s including SD.R. (Dave) Tipple Staff Sergeant Major "B" Division. Members of the Clarenville Area RCMP Veterans Group are gearing up to begin a series of Safety and Security presentations to seniors in the Clarenville Area. (cont’d next page)

( Clarenville Report Cont’d) These presentations for seniors will be

conducted at the various church halls and basements and will include lunch.

There are presentations booked for the months of November, January and February. Our veterans group would like to thank Corporal Doreen Keefe of Clarenville RCMP Detachment for her assistance in putting our program for seniors together. On Thursday October 17th the Clarenville veterans met for coffee at Robins in Clarenville. A number of our veterans were either away or hunting; however, John Wells, Hansen Dalton, Al Bert, Elmer Ryzuk, Graham Bursey, Doug Hyde, Len Stratton and Joe Lowe were in attendance. The morning passed quickly given that a few typical stories and a few jokes were shared. The Clarenville Area RCMP Veterans Group would like to extend our prayers to Al McPhee who is confined to bed as a

result of his illness. We would also like to extend our prayers and best wishes to Patsy Humby who is recovering from surgery and to John Well’s wife Angelia undergoing treatment for cancer. Any veterans who are travelling and wish to join us during our coffee meets are welcome to do so on the third Thursday of the month, 10:00 a.m. at Robins.

Editors Note: We do not have a formal report from Grand Falls District this month.

Artie reports that things were very quiet and their scheduled breakfast had to be cancelled due to training activities at the Detachment. Artie will be back with a full report next month.

Sick & Visiting – (provided by George Powell)

Gerry Bambury and Nancy have returned home from Halifax. We are told that Gerry’s condition is slowly improving. Hopefully, being home and with Nancy’s continuing care , Gerry is on the road to a speedy recovery.

Larry Power recently underwent tests which determined that he will require Bypass Surgery. The procedure has not yet been scheduled but expected to be soon. We will keep everyone updated.

Law Enforcement Support Group (provided by George Powell)

Edwina Escott (previously Member/Employee Assistance Coordinator for B Div) has been transferred to Federal Ops East (still in Div HQ). She was involved in organizing an Alcohol Support Group for Law Enforcement personnel exclusively. This group is up and running, and Edwina would like to circulate the information to Vets in the (unlikely) event that someone might be aware of an individual who could benefit from the group.

The reason for the Law Enforcement exclusivity is that in the regular groups, Law Enforcement personnel would encounter persons they deal with in their work life. (A difficult situation).

I am copying this to Edwina so you can obtain detailed information from her.

God bless,

George

HOUSE SITTER AVAILABLE – (following forwarded by President Jim Skanes, on behalf of Veteran Gerry Lynch)

Hello Jim. Trust you are getting ready for the Thanksgiving weekend and all is well with you and your family. We are settled into Calgary and busy with renovations on our house. Our address is 141 Signal Hill Circle SW, Calgary (403 803 4848) in the event anyone travels out this way. It would be great to show some Western hospitality after the many years of Newfoundland hospitality. Looking for a favour, if I can ask. Alice and I were looking forward to returning to St. John's from January to April to be with our daughter who is at MUN. We had arranged

a house exchange with friends in St. John's however this has fallen through. I would appreciate if you would canvas the St. John's vets to see if anyone is interested in having a house sitter from January to April while they enjoy travels elsewhere. The house sitters would be Alice, me and our daughter Jillian. Thanks for your assistance Jim. I look forward to hearing from you. Happy Thanksgiving Gerry
