From The Rector Christmas time certainly means very different things to different
people. With the religious and spiritual side, people look forward
to spending time with family, giving gifts, the food and drink,
catching up with friends, Christmas T.V and so on. In my own
family, growing up, we would have added Monopoly to the list of
“traditions” and with a big family it really did get quite animated.
All too often someone would debate the rules especially when
one felt hard done by, i.e. Losing the game. Life itself is full of
rules and regulations and without them things could and would
be chaotic. We need rules in our daily life but of course some are
restrictive and unnecessary and so too with faith. Christian faith
is not about rules and regulations. The truth of these Christmas
celebrations represents true life and peace. Christian faith is
centred on the person of Christ who showed us by His life and
ministry just how transformational and liberating walking with
God can be.
The real meaning of Christmas is Christ so perhaps all the other
distractions need to take a backseat, not just this once, but
always. This is not to say that the lovely traditions of Christmas
are not good in themselves, but not if they stand in the way of
discovering the true meaning of this season and encountering
the hope of the world. It would be amazing to see you out in
church during the Christmas season, putting Christ at the centre
of all the celebrations. But it is not only in church that we do
this, it is everything leading up to this very powerful and
meaningful time of year. Surely the birth of Christ deserves
much more of our attention that He gets. This year it can, and
should be different. Of course Christmas will be different for
many of our church family. The passage of time has brought so
much change and we are mindful of all of the mixed emotions
during such a beautiful, yet provocative time of year. In all of
the changes of life God is present and I feel humbled and
privileged to share the good times and the sad
times with my church family. Wishing you a
very blessed and peaceful Christmas and New
Year. With Love The Rectory Family

If You Look You won‘t need a special star, I‘m no longer just in Bethlehem, I‘m right there where you are. You may not be aware of me amid the celebrations, you‘ll have to look beyond the stores and all the decorations, but if you take a moment from your list of things to do and listen to your heart, you‘ll find I‘m waiting there for you. You‘re the one I want to be with, you‘re the reason that I came, and you‘ll find Me in the stillness as I‘m whispering your name. Love Jesus

It has been wonderful to have Canon Walter Quill around the

Bishops’ Appeal The Church of Ireland Bishops‘ Appeal is the Church‘s world Aid and Development programme. It enables an emergency
response to humanitarian crises around the world such as devastation caused by drought, famine, tsunamis, earthquakes and conflict. It also responds to the needs of people living in grinding poverty by funding community initiatives in health, education and rural development programmes. These initiatives enable people who feel marginalised and forgotten to gain skills, tools and resources to grow food or have a small business or stay healthy so they
can provide for their families. Bishops‘ Appeal donations are part of our Christian response to the biblical mandate to do justice and reach out to those who are dispossessed.
Around The World In the Coptic Church in Egypt, Christmas is celebrated on 6th and 7th January—Epiphany, the day designated as the visit of
the Magi to the stable at Bethlehem. Churches are decorated and Coptic Christians attend worship at midnight on the 6th and eat their Christmas dinner when they get home.

Shyogwe Update As a follow-up to Adam and Marlyn‘s visit
in August to Shyogwe Diocese in Rwanda
Diane and Adam have met with CMS Ireland to discuss how best to
financially support our brothers and sisters in Rwanda. Top of
the list is a project to extend Zion Education centre from its
current four classrooms to eight, which will enable the school to offer two nursery years and six primary years education. The
total cost is likely to be around £20,000. Our partners from St.
Donard‘s in Belfast and St. Mark‘s Armagh will be contributing
equal amounts as ourselves and CMSI will also seek help from the Church of Ireland priorities fund. The select vestry agreed
that we should support this project and the parish will be
sending just over £4000 to CMSI towards the project. This
money has already been given by parishioners over the past couple of years and so we already have it. It is good to know
that your contributions will be used for such a good cause.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to continuing
to build relationships and offer support to our friends in
Shyogwe.
Life And Soul
All is going well with Life and Soul. A very enjoyable Beetle Drive was well supported in September. October‘s “Harvest Shenanigans” was full of charades with a bit of music followed by lovely apple tart and ice-cream. November hosted a speaker from the Heritage Trail, Jim Hunter. On Tuesday 29th December it is planned to have a discussion of next year‘s programme. So bring along your ideas for ‗16. The kettle will be on the boil so search your cupboards and bring along your surplus Christmas cake, mince pies, sweets etc. and hopefully we will all enjoy a picnic of goodies. Remember last Tuesday of every month @ 2pm in St. Paul‘s Hall. See you all after Christmas!!! In the meantime have a good one!! Debs & Margaret x

Curate’s Corner
As I am writing this wee message, the weather outside is grey and wet! The lovely weather we had over the past two months seems to have gone and things are back to normal for the time of year. But we do have Christmas to look forward to!
For many, this time of year is not a favourite. The weather gets worse, the nights are long and all the fuss and bother of the Christmas season stretches from now until the new year. BUT --- Christmas can be a time of wonderful blessings. A time when we get to meet up with friends and family and a time when the focus should be on a baby born in Bethlehem.
For our diocese, 2016 marks the beginning of a year of Opportunity, when we will focus on Mission, children and
generosity. This can mean different things to each of us, and for me it is a chance to step back and consider how I can best communicate the good news of a baby boy born in Bethlehem who died on a cross outside Jerusalem and who was raised from death and gives us new life.
It is the best news any of us can ever hear, but how many of us really take it on board. Because if we truly believe the
claims of Jesus Christ and accept him as our Lord and Saviour, then surely we will want others to hear the good news as well. So over the next year we will be looking as a Parish at how best to encourage everyone to embrace the message of the gospel, to encourage our children and to be generous in giving of ourselves and some of our possessions as a response to the love of our God for you and for me. I am looking forward to what we decide to do!
I am also looking forward to becoming a granddad and retiring from my job in County Hall. A year of change, and new opportunities ahead. But for now, may you be blessed this Christmas season and remember that even when the clouds are low and the rain is beating on the windows, the sun is still shining brightly when we get above the clouds. And when the clouds of life threaten to overwhelm us, God‘s Spirit and the help of Christian friends can lift us above the cloud into the
light. God bless, Adam

Mothers’ Union Notes
The 15th September was the opening date for the winter session of the Mothers' Union. The Branch Leader, Lorna, welcomed the members and introduced Jane Gribbon, a parishioner, who gave a very informative talk on seasonal gardening, telling us the appropriate plants to buy at the time of year and how to plant and nurture them. Jane is a very experienced and enthusiastic gardener and everyone appreciated her sharing her knowledge and expertise. This was followed by a simple autumn arrangement by one of our members, Amanda, who showed how a variety of flowers, foliage, colours and textures could be mixed and arranged to present a lovely autumn display, for the home or for the church.
The title for the October meeting was 'Swap Shop.‟ On 20th October, the members arrived with 4 or 5 items for swapping and were handed a ticket for each one. After the devotions, members emerged into the main hall where the items were displayed. The items varied from clothing, books, toiletries, nick-knacks, bits and bobs. Here it was a 'free for all,' as members proceeded to select a favoured item. Marlyn, who had introduced the 'swap shop,' did warn us to be careful
about wrangling over a favoured item. The whole exercise proved to be a huge success. Luckily there were no skirmishes and judging by the happy faces everyone went away satisfied.
On Tuesday, 17th November, Rev. Diane Clutterbuck travelled from Belfast to speak at our meeting. Diane and her husband, Richard are ordained Ministers in the British Methodist Conference. Diane's career has been varied, ministering in
parts of England and serving a period in Tonga (her oldest child, born there was given the name 'Lesieli'). “The gift of listening,” was the theme for the talk, which was most interesting and inspiring. The opening reading had been taken from Mark 12: v18... 'Listen O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.'
Do we really listen, do we concentrate or do we interrupt? Think of Jesus on the Emmaus road, Luke24 v 13... We performed a little exercise, when we were paired off and
11
each person was given 2 minutes to tell her partner a school story about herself without interruption, not an easy task, so when next someone wants to talk, take stock and listen!Marlyn proposed a vote of thanks and Diane was wished a safe journey home.
Some of our members plan to attend St. Columb's Cathedral
on Saturday, 28th Nov. for the Prayer Vigil, organised by the Mothers' Union for 'Activism against Gender Violence.'

A Prayer Dear loving and gracious Father, you have given me blessings beyond compare. Thank you for the blessings you have freely
given me. Father I‘m struggling with where I am in life. I face trials and tribulations that I‘m not sure I can overcome alone. Please Lord help me to know that you are with me and are faithful in helping me overcome these obstacles. I pray Father that you give me a small glimmer of hope that everything will turn out ok. Please give me a sign that you are in charge and let it sink down and touch my heart so I know you won‘t leave me. Please bless me and keep me. In Jesus‘ name I pray,
Amen.

Back Home If I had the power to turn back the clock Go back to that house at the end of the block – The house that was HOME when I was a kid I know that I‘d love it more now than I did.
If I could be back there at my mother‘s knee
And hear once again all the things she told me I‘d listen as I never listened before For she knew so well just what life had in store.
And all the advice my dad used to give His voice I‘ll remember as long as I live But it didn‘t seem really important then What I‘d give just to live it all over again.
And what I‘d give for the chance I once had To do so much more for my mother and dad To give them more joy and a little less pain A little more sunshine – a little less rain.
But the years roll on and we cannot go back Whether we were born in a mansion or a shack But we can start right now – in the hour that‘s here
To do something more for the ones we hold dear.
And since time in its flight is travelling so fast Let‘s not spend time in regretting that which is past But lets make tomorrow a happier day By doing our ― GOOD to others‖ - today.

Over The Land This poem was written by an Airman, who was serving in Europe during WW1. He enclosed it in a Christmas card he
sent home.
“Over the land and over the sea, Eyes of the Navy and Army are we, Riding the storm till its fury abate,
And Love‟s sunshine scatter the black clouds of hate, While Justice and Right their dominion declare, Boundless and bright as our Kingdom, the Air.”

Year Of Opportunity
You will notice by now the leaflet enclosed in this edition of the
magazine and new banners in both churches. In 2016 we are focusing in on 3 areas Mission, Generosity and Children. The Parish Development Team are seeking prayerfully to take this forward in our Parish. The deep feeling is that we want to build on what is good and pay attention to some of the gaps. So please pray for this team who are currently reading “The Ragamuffin Gospel”, (a wonderful and challenging read already) and we are seeking to work and plan for the year ahead. Thank you for your love and prayers for this next step.
A Morning Prayer Good Morning Lord. You usher in a brand new day. Untouched and freshly new. Here I am again, dear Lord in hope your will renew me too. Forgive my many errors made just yesterday Help me Lord walk closer in thy way. Lord I'm well aware I
cant make it on my own. So take my hand and hold it tight for I cant walk alone. Submitted by Alison Haslam

Solar Panels The next time you come down Tunnel Brae have a look down at the Rectory and you might see solar panels being fitted to the roof. The orientation of the building (with a south facing roof pitch) is ideal for receiving light energy from the Sun, even if it is not a sunny day.
The ―Photo-voltaic‖ panels will convert this energy into electricity. By using this renewable power source and less oil, we will be cutting our electricity bill and helping the environment at the same time! David Dalzell.
