REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING

Air Source Heat PumpsAir to water heat pump systems are ideal for use in domestic and lightcommercial heating projects. Available in split and monobloc configuration, these inverter driven machines are becoming the waterheating systems of choice where energy efficiency is of paramount importance. They are designed for generation of space heating andsanitary hot water and work seamlessly with solar water heating systemsfor added overall efficiency. Some systems are now able to produce waterat 80 deg C, which means that they are ideal for direct boiler replacement.

ECA approved inverter heat pump systemsProducts that have ECA approval have been accepted by The CarbonTrust as meeting certain criteria for having excellent energy efficiency, andappear on the Energy Technology List. Many inverter driven split, multiand VRF/VRV systems in our range have ECA approval.

Ventilation Heat ExchangersLG, Hitachi and Daikin all offer these ducted systems which are designedfor the introduction of fresh air into a building. Using a highly efficient cross-flow heat exchanger, the cold air entering the building is preheatedby the warm air being expelled, resulting in around 70% of the heat beingretained. Most systems also offer a bypass damper which allows cold airto be introduced directly to the building when there is a cooling requirement. This results in lower use of electrically powered air conditioning equipment and boosts efficiency. The relatively low equipment cost offers an attractively short payback period.

Dixell iChill controllerOptimizing chiller operation efficiency means energy saving: for this reason, Dixell controllers have functions such as dynamic set point, whichallows an automatic change of the set point depending on external conditions, and by use of time bands, allows management over a weeklycycle in order to run the machine only when it is necessary. Compressorsare managed to only provide the refrigeration power required by the plant.

Gas detection systemsWhen a refrigeration or air conditioning systems develops a leak, theamount of refrigerant in the system falls below that necessary to provide the most efficient performance. The compressor has to run forlonger in order to provide the cooling or heating duty required, resulting inhigher energy bills. An automatic gas detection system can detect leaksearly on, allowing prompt rectification. And fixing leaks as soon as theyoccur also helps prevent damage to the environment and saves on expensive refrigerants.

Bitzer Ecostar condensing unitsThrough its inverter driven technology, an Ecostar unit is able to vary thespeed of its compressor to match the cooling load, and since the energyused by its Ecoline compressor is proportional to its speed, when runningat part load considerable energy savings can be achieved – typically 25 to30% compared to conventional fixed speed condensing units.

MTH Eco-inverter condensing unitsFor smaller refrigeration duties than the Ecostar, the MTH Eco-inverter alsovaries the speed of its compressor to match the cooling load. Since theenergy used by the compressor is proportional to its speed, considerableenergy savings are achieved when running at part load.

Daikin Zeas condensing unitsIdeal for use with multiple display cases in convenience stores, these inverter driven units match their capacity to the refrigeration load toachieve the significant energy savings that inverter drive provides.

ECA approved condensing unitsProducts that have ECA approval have been accepted by The CarbonTrust as meeting certain criteria for having excellent energy efficiency, andappear on the Energy Technology List. A number of such condensingunits are available from our range.

Sporlan inverter drivesConvert existing fixed speed compressors to variable speed using aSporlan inverter and enjoy the energy saving benefits obtained by matching compressor duty to refrigeration load.

Kuba SP Market Plus and SG Commercial evaporators

Fitted with an innovative Kuba HFE coil block, featuring internally ribbedtubes, off- set tube pattern and fins that are flared to snugly fit the tubes, these offer highly efficient heat exchange for maximum efficiency. Defrost heaters are mounted in tubes within the coil block for optimumheat transfer, so reducing the amount of energy required for defrost, andEC fan motors can be specified to further reduce power consumption. The SG models also offer integrated air straighteners and Kuba CALrefrigerant distributor for even greater efficiencies.

Sporlan electronic expansion valves and controllers; Dixell EEV control

Matched with a Sporlan controller, Sporlan electronic expansion valvesprovide highly accurate control of refrigerant to an evaporator, ensuring theevaporator can deliver its maximum efficiency. They are ideal for use withinverter driven compressors and condensing units. When a third partyelectronic expansion valve is used, a Dixell EEV controller will control thatvalve to give the same benefits, typically saving around 6.5% of energyconsumption.

Dixell xWeb supervisory systemsThese provide comprehensive monitoring and supervision of a refrigeration system, giving early warning of system problems that couldresult in higher energy consumption. Using an xWeb system as part of the optimisation of the operation of a supermarket refrigeration system, including dynamic set point control, load reduction, anti-sweat heatercontrol, night blind control, and lighting control, can save up to 30% ofelectricity consumption. Energy analysers can be connected to an xWeb network to provide further detailed analysis.

Dixell compressor rack optimisation (CRO)The CRO algorithm (Compressor Rack Optimization) installed inXWEB5000, (and optional in the XWEB500, XWEB500D), when matched to any of the XC1000D family of rack controllers, optimises the management of the compressor rack set point to provide an annual energy saving of 10 to 20% on compressor rack consumption. On its own, the XC1000D family can provide savings of 6 to 8%.

Night set back on Dixell controlsMany Dixell controls incorporate night set back as standard. This can beprogrammed to raise the set point at certain times, for example whennight blinds are deployed or in chilled drinks cabinets when a store isclosed. A higher set point reduces the amount of refrigeration duty required, and hence the energy consumed. Night set back can be activated by the controllers own internal real time clock, by an externalinput, or by a Dixell xWeb supervisory system.

R/S automatic purger for ammonia systemsNon-condensables in an ammonia system reduce system efficiency byraising discharge temperatures and by causing compressors and fans torun longer. An R/S automatic purger will remove these foreign gases fromthe system, and when none are present will revert to its energy saving“sleep mode”.

Air conditioning, Heating & Ventilation

Inverter driven VRF/VRV heat pump systemsThrough its inverter driven technology, an LG, Hitachi or Daikin system isable to vary the speed of its compressor to match the cooling or heatingrequirements of multiple indoor units. And three pipe systems can provideboth cooling and heating simultaneously. Typically these systems give aCOP of over 3.75, meaning that for each kilowatt of electricity used, over3.75 kilowatts of cooling are provided. And when providing heating, COPsexceeding 4.0 mean more than 4 kilowatts of heating for every 1 kilowattof electricity used.

Inverter driven split systems and multi-split heatpump systems

Many LG, Hitachi and Daikin systems offer an SCOP of greater than 3.75,and in the case of the LG Prestige, over 5.0. That means that, taking aseasonal average, for each kilowatt of electricity used, over 5 kilowatts ofcooling or heating is provided.
