CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 November 20, 2019 Volume XXXIX –Number 43 From Where I Sit” What a blessing it is to be able to come together on each Sunday and worship our God. We here at Centerville are so very thankful for each of you and for your love and commitment to serving others and for your faithfulness to God. May we always see the many blessings we have and be thankful for them. Have you ever thought or even said to someone, "But you don't understand." When they are only trying to help in some situation or struggle? It's hard for us to trust someone who is trying to help us when they don't understand what we're going through. I feel unqualified sometimes when dealing with someone who is going through a nasty divorce; someone trying to raise children as a single parent; someone dealing with the loss of a child; or someone who is experiencing chronic pain of some kind. Things I know about but have never experienced it myself. It's the difference in sympathy for someone or empathy with someone. However, we know Jesus can sympathize and empathize with whatever we're going through. He knew physical pain. He suffered the most agonizing death imaginable. Jesus knew emotional and spiritual pain. He had his closest friends forsake him and betray him. Jesus knew stress. His stress didn't come from a selfish desire for protection, but because he felt an overwhelming burden for other people (thousands at a time on occasion). Jesus experienced sleepless nights when he would pray and find comfort that only God could give him. What a blessing that we can carry all of our burdens and share them with him, knowing that he will listen with sympathy and respond with empathy and grace. "Casting all your care upon Him; for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7) Father, we thank you so much for Jesus who is praying for us even as we pray to you, and that He knows my needs in such a way that no one else knows. "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:15) We have a lot going on in the coming weeks. We hope that you can share in many of these with us. Our annual Thanksinging will be this Sunday, come and join us as we offer our praise of thanks together to God. Invite your friends, family and neighbors. It would be a wonderful thing to fill the auditorium as we sing together. I know we all have many things to be thankful for and as we said on Sunday, everyone likes to hear a simple "thank you" from someone occasionally. God is no different in that regard and we should thank Him often. God Bless -Todd

THE HOLIDAY SEASON is now upon us. It seems like only yesterday we were starting the school year, yet here we are drawing close to the end of the calendar year. The holidays are always full of so many wonderful activities for our youth group and church family. I hope that you have picked up a copy of our youth calendar so that you can stay up to date on all the happenings within our youth program. WE HAD A GREAT DAY this past Saturday morning as our young people took part in our annual Servant Saturday. A group of 15 teenagers met early Saturday morning to begin work raking leaves at six different houses in our community. I am proud of the work ethic of our teens and I am thankful for their willingness to serve others. THIS FRIDAY NIGHT will kick off our first 5th Quarter of the basketball season. We are going to try again to host a bonfire at the rock quarry of Camp Meribah to make up for the bonfire that we weren’t able to have during the football season. Everyone should meet at the rock quarry at camp following the game for a weenie-roast, hot chocolate, and tailgate activities. Don’t forget to dress warm and be prepared for a fun night! THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS to be thankful this time of year. I know that as the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaches, we all begin meditating on the many blessings our heavenly father has given to us. During this time of year, I am reminded of what David says as he rejoices in his blessings in 1 Chronicles 16:34 “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” Have you forgotten to give thanks for the goodness of the Lord? I appreciate how Todd put it in his sermon on Sunday that we should all remember to not only be thankful, but to also take action by giving thanks. Make sure that you spend time in the coming days and weeks to give thanks to God by spending time in prayer. Carter Hoover Youth Minister
