From Your Admin Team… December is always a busy and exciting month. There are decorations to be hung. Shopping has to be done. Plans need to be made. Lists must be checked. Cards are to be sent. Over the holidays there are plenty of fun activities that you can do with your children that are fun and educational. You can help your children continue to learn and stay active by taking a math hike. Walk together through your neighbourhood or along one of the many beautiful trails in our area. You can have children help to plan the outing by discussing how far you might go, how long it will take and how fast you might travel.. Children can be math detectives as they consider and discuss some of the following: · What geometric shapes can you find, manmade or natural? · What patterns can you see? · How could you estimate how tall or wide something is? · Do you see symmetry anywhere? · Are there arrangements that make it easy to count how many objects you see? · Can you guess the angles formed by branches or leaves? How did you estimate? · Do you see numerals anywhere? What do they tell us? For long lasting fun, take along a camera to capture pictures of the math you see. On behalf of the staff of Harriet Tubman School, we wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. School Council News... Please consider joining us for our next School Council meeting on Tuesday, January 28 at 6:00 p.m. You do not have to be on the executive to be on the coun- cil. Come on out to see what we are all about! Thanks to our School Council… For all their hard work organizing the Santas Little Helper and Moms Pantry Fundraisers, Also for putting together the very successful Vendor Fair. Thank you for funding our new Chill Kits for use in every classroom. The Great Grain Race We have been challenged to run a Grain Drive. It will run on Dec 11 and Dec 18 during our Holiday Concerts. Harriet’s Heroes are hoping that you can assist us with our “Stuff a Stocking” Christmas Drive. Every year our group of Harriet’s Heroes reaches out to help children in our community have a Merry Christmas. This year we will be “stuffing” stockings! We would appreciate any assistance you, your family, your friends, or your place of work would be willing to give. We are hoping to give each child a stocking filled with gift cards, hygiene products and treats: Please note that, thanks to a generous donor, we will provide the stockings!

We would be appreciative of anything you can give to fill the stockings! Whether it is “stuffing an entire stocking”; providing several of the same items to divide among stockings; and/or assisting us with cash or gift cards (see below for suggestions of stores) in various denominations ($25, $50, $75, $100 amounts), we will be able to make sure all of our needy students have a very Merry Christmas! Please send in your donations to Mrs. VanZalen at the office! The K5 class worked hard all No-vember long demonstrating the core value of kindness every day. The "Kindness Ninjas" made cards and posters for the school, and partici-pated in Random Acts of Kindness such as helping Ms. Richter rake the leaves in the school yard. During the month of November Mrs. Mendonca's and Mrs. Morrison's grade 5's had the privilege to experience a variety of different physical activities in their gym class. Our goal is to expose youth today to a variety of activities to help them learn what motivates them to be lifelong active individuals. We also feel it is important to build a positive partnership between youth and organizations in our neighbourhood. A big thank you to Aaron Mendonca and Angela from the Walker Family YMCA for leading us in circuits and Zumba. Thank you to parent council for funding

Thanks Rocks and Rings for teaching us all about curling!!

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

If your child has any of these symptoms when it is time for school, it is best that he/she stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. Practicing regular hand washing and teaching children to “cover their cough” are great ways to prevent the spread of illness.

With winter coming and cold and flu season upon us please review the following guidelines when deciding whether you should send your child to school. Do not send them to school if they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

1. A temperature of more than 100 degrees 2. Nausea or vomiting 3. Stomach-ache 4. Diarrhea 5. Pale or flushed face 6. Persistent cough 7. Headache 8. Earache 9. Thick yellowish discharge from nose 10. Sore throat 11. Rash or infection of the skin 12. Red or pink eyes 13. Loss of energy or decrease in activity

ALLERGY ALERT

To help protect children with severe allergies to: peanut/peanut oil/(walnuts, hazelnuts) from having an allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock that can be life threatening, please do not send any products containing nuts or nut oil to school for lunches or snacks. If students go home for lunch, please ensure that they wash their hands before returning to school. A list of safe foods is available at the office.

GENTLE REMINDER TO PARENTS

The office at Harriet Tubman is a very busy place especially at the beginning of the day and during break times. If you need to have a message delivered to your child before the end of the day please ensure that you call the school prior to our second break at 12:50 pm. We cannot guarantee that students will receive messages called in after second break as students often have rotary during the last instructional block of the day.

Any parents or guests at Harriet Tubman School are asked to check into the office, sign in as a visitor and wear a visitors badge while you are in the school.

For safety reasons we request that students use their own divisional doors when arriving at school in the morning. Students are not permitted to use the front doors unless they are a bus student going to Breakfast Club or they arrive after 8:40 am.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause transportation cancellations or school closures. At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or not to have children in the school on that day rests with the parent or guardian. Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you go on School Messenger Safe Arrival to inform the school of your child’s absence.

A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the beginning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you wish to be followed throughout the school year.

Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is available through the following channels.
