By Minnie McCormickMAINE - Mae Johnson in-
troduced Town Manager, Jack Clukey who gave a power point presentation of the Riverfront Restoration Project when the GFWC/Miosac Club met Nov. 4 at Thayer Parkway with 16 members and one guest attend-ing. Many questions were asked regarding what would be avail-able there; there are 22 apart-ments, a cafe and a boutique plus other things. It will be a beauti-ful place when it is all done and landscaped.
President Vicki Moschella called the meeting to order. Mae Johnson led the Collect, Ameri-can’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. In the absence of Secretary Cathie Goodine, Pat Jones took roll call and read the minutes which were accepted with one correc-tion. Carol Kilpatrick gave the treasurer’s report. Diane Leigh-ton read correspondence from Kiwanis regarding the Commu-nity Christmas Project. Members voted to participate as we have in years past with donation from the club and members. We will also act as elves to help with the shopping. Vicki sold some dolls and the money will also go to the Kiwanis project. Vicki Moschella

read a thank you note from Min-nie McCormick for the beautiful bouquet and cards she received.
Pat Jones reported that she and Barb Austin have planted the daffodil bulbs at the Marion Doore Park. Discussion followed regarding getting the Boy Scouts to clean up the park. Carol Kil-patrick will take care of that.
Carol then reported on the formation of a new scholarship. The committee has met and have made good progress. It will be tweaked and then presented to the club for approval.
Minnie McCormick announced the next meeting will be Novem-
ber 18 with Adam Sheean and Diane Parola presenting “Bank-ing for Seniors”. Roxy McGlau-fl in is in charge of the program. It was also announced that our Christmas meeting has been changed to Barb Austin’s home on December 2.
Members were asked to in-clude Leona Dow in the Travel-ing Basket and the Christmas Name drawing. Leona is an As-sociate and has all privileges ex-cept voting.
Vicki Moschella reported on ten posters she and Leona put out for “Make a Difference Day”. Three members made the posters informing people to be aware of Elder Abuse. Elder Abuse Aware-
ness is GFWCMaine President Marjorie Goodwin’s project for the next two years. More posters will be made and placed in differ-ent areas around town.
The Traveling Basket income was discussed as where to use the money. Many suggestions were made and members will be thinking about how to use it. International Outreach is an important part of GFWC so that was a suggestion for the funds. Members will discuss it at the next meeting.
Mae Johnson has made two Prayer shawls for an ongoing project of the club. The next meeting will be November 18 with hostesses Rheba Michaud and Elaine Larson.

SOCCER LEAGUE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD – The Highview Christian Academy’s Junior High girls recently won the Mid-Maine Junior High League Sportsmanship Award for the Girl’s Division. This was their fi rst season competing in the all girls division. Prior to this year the girls had been part of a Co-ed team. Their team spirit, endurance, effort, commitment and dedication was recognized throughout the season. The team was coached by Kim Hill. Team players shown front row, left to right: Anna Torbett, Mya Frost, Kelsey Jurczak, Olivia Hill, Jessica Jurczak, Leah Hill, Monica Pomerleau; Back row: Coach Hill, Trista Allen, Halle Kutz, Chloe Eckstein, Sara Spencer, Javona Philbrick and Samantha Bishop.
GUILFORD - This November 27 marks the 11th annual free Thanksgiving dinner offered to the community, by the commu-nity. The meal is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiv-ing Day at the Guilford United Methodist Church on the corner of North Main and School streets in Guilford. Take-out and deliv-ered meals are available to those who need them, as are rides to the event.
Even though the meal is at a church, organizers said it is not a church-related event, but is held there because the facility is donated and features a kitchen and large dining area suitable for hosting dinner for the 60 to 80 people who attend each year.
Volunteers are needed to cook and deliver food to the church, to serve food, to socialize with the
guests, to deliver meals to the homebound, and to clean up af-ter the meal. Donations of cooked foods delivered to the church by 10 a.m. are being sought, as are donations of cash, and food items such as butter, pickles, coffee, etc. that can be made ahead of the event. Any cash left over af-ter each year’s event is donated to the church food cupboard, and leftover food is packed up and
sent home with the guests. There will be plenty of decks
of cards and board games on hand, and people are invited to stay and socialize after the meal. Volunteers willing to provide live entertainment would also be welcome. To donate, volunteer or obtain information about the free Thanksgiving dinner, call Lori Rohdin at 717-6213.

FORUMThe Eastern Gazette welcomes Letters to the Editor from
readers in our coverage area addressing issues of local public interest.
A Heartfelt Veterans DayTo the Editor:On behalf of myself and others who received a “Quilt of Valor” at
the PVHS Veterans Day assembly, I would like to thank the Quilts of Valor for all their great work. Ten quilts were awarded to combat veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the War on Terrorism. I was especially proud to see the awards presented to Korean and Vietnam Wars, as they are fi nally getting their recognition. Two of the quilts were made by Penquis Valley High School student under the direc-tion of Marie McSwine.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organization whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Local quilters make quilts to support this effort. More information can be found at http://www.qovf.org.
Now to what I really want to say. We in the Brownville/Milo area are very fortunate to have among us a great lady and that is Marie McSwine of Brownville. Marie is the one who was behind the presen-tation of the quilts. Marie is one of the most giving persons I have ever met. She and her husband Wayne have two of their children who are in the military, one in the Army and one in the Air Force. If there is anything going on locally Marie is involved, such as benefi t suppers and the Brownville Junction United Methodist Church Thrift shop. Marie is very civic-minded and has served on the school board and is currently serving on the Brownville Budget Committee.
Thanks so much Marie.Sincerely,Terrance R. KnowlesCommand Sergeant Major, Army, RetiredMilo
