Dr. Vladimir Genis and Colleagues Receive NSF Grant for “Development of the Laboratory-Based Course in Lean Six Sigma Nanomanufacturing”Dr.VladimirGenis(PI),AffiliateProfessorinBIOMEDandAssociateProfessoratGoodwinCollegeandAppliedEngineeringTechnology(AET)programdirector,Dr.MichaelMauk(Co-PI),AssistantProfessor,AETprogram,GoodwinCollege,andDr.YuryGogotsi(Co-PI),ProfessorinCoE,receiveda$150,000NationalScienceFoundation(NSF)grantfor“DevelopmentoftheLaboratory-BasedCourseinLeanSixSigmaNanomanufacturing.”Thegoaloftheproposedtwo-yearprojectistoimplementtheIntroductiontoNanotechnologycoursedevelopedforGoodwinCollegeundergraduateAETstudents.Theprojectrepresentsaninnovativeapproachforexpandingthiscourseintoahands-onlaboratoryandproject-basedlearningexperienceusingtheLeanSixSigmamethodsandprinciples.Thisuniquecombination of learning, training and assessment will contribute to the knowledge baseofundergraduateSTEM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Mathematics)education,researchandpractice.



Dr. Wan Shih Is Awarded as Co-Principal Investigator for Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Grant for Near Infrared Quantum Dot Imaging ProjectDr.WanShih,AssociateProfessorinBIOMED,wasrecommendedasCo-PIforaConceptAwardfromtheDepartmentofDefenseBreastCancerResearchProgram(BCRP)oftheOfficeoftheCongressionallyDirectedMedicalResearchPrograms(CDMRP)intheamountof$112,500fortheperiodJuly1,2009-June30,2010.Thisconceptawardwillallowinitialstudyofapplyingnearinfraredquantumdotimagingforclearmargindeterminationduringbreastcancersurgery.

Dr. Wan Shih and Colleagues Are Issued a U.S. Patent for Piezoelectric Cantilever SensorsDr.WanShih,AssociateProfessorinBIOMED,Dr.WeiShih,ProfessorinMSE,andDr.ZuyanShen,inMSE,wereawardedapatentfortheirtechnology“PiezoelectricCantileverSensors,”PatentNo.7,458,265,issuedDecember2,2008.Thisissuanceofthispatentre-affirmstheleadershipofthisinnovativetechnologyinthecompetitivefieldofbiosensingandensuresitscommercializationprospectinmanydifferentclinicalapplicationsrangingfromcancermarkertoinfectiousdiseasedetectionsinrealtime.

Dr. Wan Shih and Colleagues Obtain Approval for a U.S. Patent for All Electrical Piezoelectric Finger Sensor (PEFS)Dr.WanShih,AssociateProfessorinBIOMED,Dr.WeiShih,ProfessorinMSE,alongwithAnnaMarkidou,StevenSzewczyk,andHakkiYegingil,allgraduatestudentsinMSE,obtainedapprovalforapatentfortheirtechnology“AllElectricalPiezoelectricFingerSensor(PEFS),”USPatentApplicationNo.10/493,094,onNovember,2008.Thisissuanceofthispatentpermitsthispioneeringtissueelasticitysensortechnologybeappliedtomanyclinicalapplicationsfromnon-invasivedisease/cancerdetectiontohapticapplicationinsurgery.

Dr. Wan Shih Is Awarded as Principal Investigator for Nanotechnology Institute (NTI) Grant for Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensors ProjectDr.WanShih,AssociateProfessorinBIOMED,wasawardedasPIamulti-institutioncoregrantof$500,000thatinvolvesDrexel,FoxChaseCancerCenter,andTempleUniversityfromtheNanotechnologyInstituteforthedurationofSeptember1,2009–December31,2010.Thisgrantisforthedevelopmentofpiezoelectricmicrocantileversensorsformarkerprotein,antibody,andcellsdetectioninseraforearlycancerdetectionandtherapeuticmonitoring.



Dr. Wan Shih Is Awarded as Co-Principal Investigator for State of Pennsylvania Tobacco Grant for Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensors ProjectDr.WanShih,AssociateProfessorinBIOMED,wasawardedasCo-PIforaStateofPennsylvaniaTobaccoGrantfor$75,000fordrugresistantinfectiondetectionforthedurationJanuary1,2009–December31,2009.Thisseedgrantwillallowinitialstudyofapplyingpiezoelectricmicrocantileversensortechnologyforearlydetectionofdrug-resistant,hospitalacquiredinfections.

BIOMED Receives $500,000 Grant from NetScientific To Provide Follow-On Funding to Biomedical TechnologiesTheSchoolofBiomedicalEngineering,ScienceandHealthSystemsreceivedagrantfor$500,000foraperiodofoneyear,withthepossibilityofrenewalinthesameamountforeachofthefoursubsequentyears,toprovidefollow-onfundingtobiomedicaltechnologiesunderdevelopmentinthescopeoftheSchool’stranslationalresearchprogram.SuccessfulprogressofthisprogramwillqualifytheSchoolfortheCoulterFoundationTranslationalResearchEndowment.
