GLOBAL RESTRUCG

EMOYMENT, AND SOCIAL INY IN URBAN LAIN AMERICA

edited by Richard Tardanico and Rafael Menjivar Larin

ISBN: 1-57454-019-X, 304 pages, paper/$24.95 Despite new opportunities arising from transformations in the global economic and political arenas in the 1990s, Latin American states have become more vulnerable to transnational capital movements and market shifts. Without the implementation of vigorous, innova- tive policies to promote social equality and upgrade national infra- structures, economic growth will yield widening inequalities within and between nations.

This volume's multidisci- plinary cast of authors uses a comparative framework to explore the implications of global transformations and national development policies for urban employ- ment and social inequality in Latin America. The authors examine socioeco- nomic change in labor markets, including privati- zation, industry and export transformations, growth of precarious and informal employment, gender realignments, and territorial reorganization.

GENERATING SAVINGS FOR LATIN AMERICAN DEvEoP1EnTr edited by Robert Grosse

ISBN: 1-57454-044-0, 192 pages, paper/$24.95

How can savings be generated and mobilized to support Latin American development into the twenty-first cen- tury? This underlying question is ana- lyzed in detail for the region and for several individual countries. The vol- ume's authors examine the contribution of savings to the process of capital for- mation, the relationship between

domestic savings and domestic investment, and the effects of foreign invest- ment upon savings and cap- ital investment in the region.

Robert Grosse is professor of international business and director of research at Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management.

MAKING NAFTA WORK: U.S. FiRMs AND THE NEW NORTH AMERICAN BusiNEss ENVIRONMENT by Stephen Blank and Jery Haar

Blank and Haar examine how dynamic changes in the North American business environment, accelerated

by NAFTA, have transformed corporate strategies and struc- tures and affected patterns of U.S. investment in North America. Using a series of survey questionnaires and focused interviews with U.S multinational sub- sidiary executives in Mexico and Canada, the authors determine what firms hope to gain from the new North American rationalization and integration strategies and analyze the factors that have driven those strategies.

Stephen Blank is professor of management and international business at the Lubin School of Business at Pace University.

Jerry Haar is senior research associate and director of the Inter-American Business and Labor Program of the North-South Center at the University of Miami.
