THE Committee appointed by the Royal Socitey to direEt the publication of theC PhiloJophical

franfaAi-ons, take this opportunity to acquaint tlle public, that it fully appears, as well from the counciL- books and journals of the Society, as from repeated declarations, which have been made in feveral for- mer lRranJsaAions, that the printing of them was al- ways, fFom time to time, the fingle ads of the re- fpedrive Secretaries, till the Fortlr-feventh Volume And this information was thought the more necellary, not only as it has been the common opinion, that they were publiffied by the authority, and under the di- reEtion, of the Society itSelf; but alfo, becauSe feveral authors, both at home and abroadX have in their writ ings called them the TFranSasns of the Royal Society. Whereas in truth the Society, as a body, nesrer did intereR themfelves any further in their publication, than by occafionally recommending the revival of them to fome of their Secretariess whenfi from the par- ticular circu-mRances of their aiairs, the fWaAions - had happened for any length of ttme to be intermitted. And this feems principally to have been done with a view to fatisfy the public, that their ufiual tneetings were then continued for the improvement of know- ledge, and benefit of mankind, Fe great ends of their fir{} inRitution by the Royal Charters, and which they have ever fince ileadity purfued.

ZBut the Socxety bting of late years greatly inlarged, and their communicattons more numerous, it was thollght adviAfeable, that a Committee of their Mem- bers fhould be appointed to reconfider the papers read before them, and feleEt out of thern fuch, as they

It is likewiCe nsefl*ary--ors this occation to remarks that it is an eIRablifl;ed ra}le of the Socie$y, to which they will always adhere, never to give their opinion, as a bod upon any fulbj0:, either of nature or art, that xmes beforc them. And therefore the thanis, zvhich are fmquently propofed from the chair to be given to the authors of fuch papers, as are read at their accuPromed meetings5 or to the perfons, through whoSe hands they recexve them, are to be confidered n no other light, t}sn-as a matter of civility,, in re

turn forv th reEpedc :ewn to the Society by thefe- communications The like al§-o is to be faid with regard to the feveral proje^, inventions, and curio- flties of various kinds, which are often axhibited t the Society; the authors whereofi or thofe who ex- hibit them, frequently take the liberty to reportj and even to certify in the pwbl¢ news-papers, that they have met with the highell apphuSe and approbaiioia. And therefore it is hop@ds that noi regard will here- after be paid to fuch reportsfi and public notices; which irJ fome inftances-have been too lightly cre- dited? to the didlonour of the Ssicty.
