Our cover art this year is by Jim Madden. The front cover image,

which depicts a landscape inspired by thoughts of childhood

summers spent alongshore, is a 9" by 12" oil on paper called

Crucible 1996. Mr. Madden earned a B.Arch. from the RJiode

Island School of Design in 1975 and practiced architecture in

Portland, Oregon until 1987. While living in Bozeman, Montana

from 1988 to 1992 he began painting landscapes and returned to

school. He earned a BFA in painting from The School of the Art

Institute of Chicago in 1994 and an MA from The University of

Iowa in 1996. In May 1997 he earned an MFA in painting from

The University of Iowa and plans to return to Montana with his

wife, Corinne. All works are in the collection of the artist and are

reproduced with his permission.
