Spartanburg Methodist College

In this edition of Frontiers, we proudly present our Honor Roll of Donors. In 2005, the College received the highest gifts and pledges in the

history of the College. These gifts enable us to operate with a balanced budget and to pursue new projects to strengthen our institution. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who support us as we work with the young women and men entrusted to us for an education. Exceeding fundraising goals might indicate to some that we now “ease-off and coast a bit.” To do so would be a most egregious mistake that would weaken our institution for years to come. This is not the time to let-up. It is time to move forward with a firm resolve to further strengthen our College! It is a time for decisive action to ensure that the future of our great institution is secure as we educate the students we serve. For several consecutive years, our residence halls have been filled to capacity (in some instances, overcrowded) and our enrollment has exceeded 700 students. In anticipation of our continuing growth and the need for additional residential facilities, the Board of Trustees approved the construction of Sparrow Residence Hall, a 118-bed facility scheduled to open in August 2006. In addition to a most generous gift from John Sparrow and his family, the College secured a $6 million bond to fund this and other capital projects. We need your help to satisfy this debt. Investing in our students reaps rewards that exceed the lives of those we educate. Our focus on the first two years of a liberal arts education provides foundations for academic and personal growth. In some instances, student growth is immediate and dramatic. In other instances, the foundations we construct become “time capsules” that are opened by students later in their lives. In all instances, students are changed… even as they change the lives of others. As a liberal arts institution, our focus is not on vocational tracks; rather, our focus is on the development of the whole person: the body, mind, and spirit. One cannot place a dollar value on the importance of “transformational education” that occurs every day at Spartanburg Methodist College. Rest assured that investments in our students are returned a thousand fold and more. Telling the SMC story to loyal friends of the College is a most fulfilling experience. I invite you to join me in telling the story of lives that are changed by loyal friends who care about the future of our students and our great nation. Together, we can ensure that our mission will extend beyond our lifetimes as the students we educate transform the world in which they live.

May God bless you now and throughout your life!

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO LET UP!

Spartanburg Methodist College

A Record YearIn 2005, financial contributions to Spartanburg

Methodist College reached the highest level in the history of the Institution. Trustees, employees,

alumni, and friends of the College provided a total of $4,869,990 in gifts and pledges. The total cash con-tributions exceeded the level in 2004 by $461,402 – a 26 percent increase in giving. “This increase can be attributed to several things,” said Charles Teague, President of the College, “including SMC’s strong commitment to academic excellence and the College’s ongoing effort to serve qualified students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.” The Institutional Advancement Office developed new ways to interact with prospective donors, including “one-on-one” meetings to inform them of the mission of the College and the institution’s strategic plan. “SMC is well known in our region. Communicating our mission and presenting our case for support is vitally important to those we serve. In addition to our professional and experienced staff, we applaud the many volunteers who helped us reach this level of success,” said Teague. In 2005, SMC received two $1 million commitments and had record contributions in three fundraising areas. The College received a $1 million commitment from Mr. John Sparrow and his family in Lake City, S.C. to construct the new Sparrow Residence Hall, a 118-bed facility that is scheduled to open in August 2006. Also, in February 2005, Drs.

Edgar and Charlotte Ellis of Columbia, S.C. provided a $1 million challenge grant to the Board of Trustees that will provide additional capital resources for other projects in the College’s strategic plan. The College received $1,060,002 in 2005 through the Annual Fund Program that supports the general operating budget of the College. This total exceeded the 2004 goal by $30,000. This was the 26th consecutive year that the Annual Fund exceeded its goal. The Gift Planning Office also had a very good year resulting in future commitments of $923,993. Contributions for capital projects, endowed scholarships, and other

programs reached a total of $1,169,980 in 2005, which is the largest one-year total in the history of the College. Teague summarized the importance of the financial support received by the College: “In addition to our many friends, we are grateful for the support we receive from foundations and the

United Methodist Church. The Spartanburg County Foundation, the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, the General Board of Global Ministries, and The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation continue to support us with their gifts. Our partnership with these many friends enables us to provide excellent professors and staff who are committed to the total development of our students. With such support, SMC continues to prepare students to become the future leaders of tomorrow.”

2005 Makes Fund-Raising

History

Lyda Scholarship EstablishedThe R. E. and Mary B. Lyda Endowed Scholarship

Fund was recently established at Spartanburg Methodist College by the Lyda family to honor the life-long commitment of R.E. and Mary B. Lyda to edu-cation. Their son, John Lyda (’65), established the scholarship, which will be awarded annually to de-serving students with preference to students from Spartanburg County School District 1. The first award from this scholarship will be made for the fall semester in 2006, according to Don Tate, Director of Development and Church Solicitations at SMC. Mrs. Lyda had a career of over 40 years’ service in the Spartanburg County school system as a teacher and as county attendance supervisor. Now 97 years old, she resides in the Holly Springs community near Inman. R.E. Lyda, a farmer, died in 1989. John said his parents strongly promoted the val-ue of education to all the family offspring, and added that establishing the scholarship was something he

wanted to do for a long time. John recalled that as a young man he wasn’t interested in pursuing higher education, but through his mother’s perseverance he attended then-Spartanburg Junior College. He later became a History major at Wofford College, where he graduated in 1969. “She took the bull by the horns and enrolled me in SJC. I have been grateful ever since, both to my mother and to the College,” said John, who briefly did practice teaching. John’s sister, Mary Lytle, re-cently retired after teaching 29 years in Spartanburg County. John spent much of his career at an inter-national company selling dyes and chemicals to the textile industry and currently is the owner of Color-Sources Inc., a textile dyes and chemicals business in Advance, N.C. The Lyda family and friends will continue con-tributing to the Fund, with the goal of awarding a full scholarship each year.

Sparrow Residence Hall begins to assume a recognizable shape as Spartanburg Methodist College’s newest facility. Sparrow Hall will house 118 students in three- and four-bedroom suites. Completion of the 30,471 square-foot $4.8 million resi-

dence hall is expected later this year. Sparrow Hall is named in memory of the parents of Mr. John Sparrow of Lake City. Sparrow and members of his family have a long-standing tradition of support for SMC. The three-story residence hall was designed by McMillan-Smith Architects and is being built by Trehel Construction.

SMC Remembers Miller

Lucy Atkins Miller (‘49), a member of the SMC Board

of Trustees, died Feb. 8, 2006. Lucy and her twin sister Louise At-kins both attended Spartanburg Junior College. She was asso-ciated with Citizens and Southern Bank until 1974 and Southeastern Paper Company as Comptroller until she retired in 1988. She was a member of Southside Bap-tist Church where she served on the Finance and Personnel committees. She also served on the Board of the Mary Black Foundation and was a member of the Spartanburg Lions Club. Lucy and Louise established the Atkins-Miller Family Scholarship Fund in 2002 to benefit worthy students from Spartanburg County who are eligible for the Women’s Basketball program. For their ongoing service to SMC, both Lucy and her sister were named Alumnae of the Year in 2003. She was the wife of Hon. E. Lewis Miller, a former mayor of Spartanburg. “Lucy Miller embodied the beautiful image of Southern ladies filled with charm and grace,” said President Teague, adding that Lucy was a committed and tireless supporter of SMC who freely gave her time, resources, and leadership to promote the mission of her alma mater. Teague commented that Lucy “understood the nature of Trusteeship” as she shared her wisdom, wealth and work in support of her alma mater. Teague said the SMC community would miss Lucy’s positive attitude and resolute demeanor to help others. “We shall miss her deeply.” “Embedded in the mission of Spartanburg Methodist College is the need to create a values-oriented environment where students can de-velop sensitivity to the needs of others. It almost seemed that the mission had been carefully crafted by Lucy,” said Dan Foster, Chairman of the SMC Trustees. Foster noted that Lucy was devoted to church and family, and was genu-inely concerned about the welfare of young men and women. Services for Lucy were held Feb. 12 at Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

For more than a century, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church has ministered to the

surrounding Spartan Mill village from the corner of Farley Avenue and Brawley Street. But more than a century after this small church was established, its influence has spread far beyond the boundaries of the surrounding mill village:

Founded in 1889 as a mission of Central Methodist Church of Spartanburg Named for Bishop William W. Duncan, a member of Wofford College’s first graduating class of 1858 Mother church of what is today Spartanburg Methodist College “Church-away-from-home” for many Wofford and SMC graduates of note throughout its history, including many UM Pastors Home church of the late Vernon Foster, long- time Spartan Mills employee and an employee of the Spartanburg Herald Journal and author of a history of Spartanburg County Home of The David English Camak SocietyThe church that nurtured at least eight per-sons into a career in ministry (probably more than any other single church in South Caro-lina)While minister at then- Duncan Memorial Methodist Church, the Rev. David English Camak established the Textile Industrial Institute in a modest mill house located across the street. TII grew to eventually become present-day Spartanburg Methodist College. (Camak requested appointment to the church in order to pursue his ambition of starting a school for mill workers.)

A closing worship ceremony will be held May 21 at Duncan Church. But the church is leaving a lasting legacy – an endowed scholarship at Spartanburg Methodist College in the name of the Church – keeping the spirit of the church alive into the future. Contact:Rev. cases they are first-generation college students. For Bowles, the fact that some families struggle to put their sons and daughters through college underscores the importance of opportunities extended to them by SMC. When a student becomes the first in their family to graduate from college, Bowles is reminded of a tradition dating back almost a century to the days of the Textile Industrial Institute (SMC’s original name). “It is still a grand tradition and it tugs at my heartstrings every time I see a student make it who otherwise might not have had a chance. Any non-traditional degree delivery we can give certainly goes

back to our roots because we were the first campus that did any sort o f c oope ra t i v e education where you worked for a while and came to school for a while.” Bowles recognizes the need of many students to work to support their education and asserts that SMC will continue to find ways to accommodate them. She feels that it is important to continually examine the curriculum and explore areas for future expansion of programs that will benefit both students

who reside on campus and the working adult in search of educational advancement. Although there are other two-year options available to students, Bowles is a believer in the type of experience that SMC offers – one that provides an environment where students can live on campus and take advantage of opportunities in leadership and athletics – something Bowles says should never change.

For Dr. Ann Bowles, the new Vice President for Academic Affairs, coming to Spartanburg Methodist College is a homecoming in many

respects. Having previously served on the SMC staff in the 1990s as Director of Special Programs and New College, Bowles is familiar to many faculty and staff members, as well as students enrolled during her previous tenure. This past November, Bowles returned to SMC in a different capacity after serving various administrative and staff positions at North Greenville College and regional USC campuses. Bowles feels that SMC is “a great fit” for her. Bowles sees herself as part of a team working at a special task – providing a new generation of students with the type of academic opportunity that made a difference in her own life when she was a student. “She has a great sense of humor a n d i s s u c h a very positive and encouraging person to be around,” said Pete Aylor, Director of the Counseling Center at SMC, who has known Bowles for years, including a period of time when both worked at Spartanburg Technical College. Bowles feels at home in a private, two-year college setting that reminds her of the type of institution she chose to attend – one that extended her an opportunity that would not have otherwise been possible. Because of this, Bowles has a keen insight regarding today’s SMC students. “That college student probably looks a lot like I did,” noted Bowles, pointing out that in many

— Erin Bentrim-Tapio, Ph.D.Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Institutional Research Overthenextseveralissues,Dr.Bentrim-Tapiowillexplain the function of the Institutional Effectivenessand Institutional Research office at Spartanburg Methodist College, and untangle the alphabet soup of acronyms seemingly inherent to higher education. The primary function of the IE/IR Office is to provide effective leadership and support for the implementation, collection, design, analysis, and reporting of research results for enrollment management, strategic planning, budgeting, student outcomes assessment, and instructional and institutional effectiveness across campus. A fundamental and critical aspect of the office is ensuring the utilization of data to improve the institution not only as a whole, but also as specific administrative units and academic departments within the institution. The types of activities that achieve the mission of the IE/IR office include assessment projects, data reports (internal and external), maintaining a longitudinal student database, and making recommendations on policies and decisions based on data analyses and not anecdotal evidence. Another major responsibility of the IE/IR office is to coordinate the reaffirmation of accreditation process. I serve as the Accreditation Liaison for SMC and our accrediting body. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the regional accrediting body for higher education institutions in the Southern states that award associates, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees. Accreditation by the Commission on Colleges indicates an institution has and maintains appropriate educational programs and objectives consistent with the mission and the degrees it offers. Ultimately, the accreditation process provides an

assessment of institutional effectiveness, compliance with certain guidelines, and measures efforts to enhance student learning and programs. In 2001, the Commission on Colleges adopted the Principles of Accreditation which was significantly different to earlier accreditation approaches. Accordingly, the relationship between an institution, the Commission, and accreditation status rests on an institution’s integrity and its commitment to quality enhancement. These underlying foundations support the accreditation process. In addition to the Principles, an institution is evaluated on compliance with the areas of Core Requirements, Comprehensive Standards, and additional Federal Requirements.

An essential component of the Core Requirements is CR 2.12, which address the Quality Enhancement Plan. Specifically, “The institution has developed an acceptable Quality Enhancement Plan and demonstrates that the plan is part of an ongoing planning and evaluation process” (Commission on Colleges, The Principles of Accreditation, 2004). Institutions go through the reaffirmation process every 10

years. Spartanburg Methodist College is due for its decennial review beginning in 2007 and finishing in 2009. To this end, we have laid the groundwork for our reaffirmation with preparations for development of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP Team is in place and is involving the SMC community in the development of the Quality Enhancement Plan. Participation from alumni, students, faculty, staff, and students is vital to the success of the QEP. The team is looking forward to soliciting your suggestions, advice, and thoughts. In the next issue, I will provide additional details on the QEP and other aspects of the reaffirmation process. In the meantime, please let me know if I can answer any questions for you or if you just desire some additional information.

SMC Students Spend Fall Break Helping Gulf Coast Hurricane Victims

Students returning from Fall Break are often asked, “What did you do over Fall Beak?” For many, the answer might be that they went

home, visited high school friends and caught up on sleep. Others might say they went to the beach or some other exciting destination. But for six young women from SMC, the answer was quite different. On October 14, Steffi Norton, Brandy Guarino, Stephanie Raines, Amanda Shelnutt, Sharon Smith, and Alexandra Whitley departed from SMC with Chaplain Candice Sloan and Director of Student Activities and Leadership Development Kim Day for Baldwin, La., where they stayed at the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR’s) Sager-Brown Distribution Center. At the center the students inspected and prepared for distribution as many Health Kits as they could. Later, they traveled to a rural community south of Lake Charles, La. to help families collect the Health Kits, Flood Buckets, and other supplies needed to begin recovering from the storms. Preparation for the trip began within days of Hur-ricane Katrina’s landfall. Sloan said that many stu-dents began asking what they could do to help. A week after Katrina struck, students led a candlelight

prayer service for the hurricane victims. Then, stu-dents, faculty, and staff began putting together Health Kits to be sent to the stricken area. Dozens of Health Kits were collected and sent to Louisiana on trucks loaded with relief supplies collected by churches from across South Carolina. The truck loads of Health Kits, Flood Buckets, School Kits, blankets, water, and other disaster re-lief supplies from South Carolina along with supplies from across the country were placed in UMCOR’s De-pot, a large warehouse on the Sager-Brown campus. The kits and emergency supplies collected at Sager-Brown would then be sent to the areas hardest hit by Katrina and later Rita and other areas hit by natural disasters. As each disaster hits, UMCOR is able to re-spond because United Methodists across the country donate millions of dollars worth of supplies to help those with overwhelming needs. But before any kits or supplies can leave the warehouse, they must be inspected and re-packaged for distribution. Hundreds of volunteers contribute thousands of hours to insure that everything is prop-erly prepared for distribution. “What did you do over fall break?” These six wom-en could say they inspected Health Kits for hours on end. They could say they traveled around Louisiana. They could say they unloaded trucks and loaded sup-plies into cars and trucks. They could say they talked to a number of people who had lost everything. Or, they could say that they joined with other members of the body of Christ to feed the hungry, provide drink for the thirsty, and help those in need of the basic ne-cessities of life along the Gulf Coast and around the world.

If you lost everything you have ever worked hardforyouwouldwantsome-body to help you out. Give to others as they wouldgive to you.

“What I did over Fall Break”In the students’ own words

This has not been merely a trip. It has been an adventurefullofnewfaces,places,andexperienc-es. I will remember more than I will forget. I have met and gotten to know many amazing people on this trip. Names aren’t the important thing here, but seeing and interacting with the survivors of both Ka-trina and Rita has inspired me. Some of these people have lost everything themselves and still insist on helping others. These people are nothing short of he-roes.Theytouchedmyheart. — Steffi Norton

I remember how much he people really needed us to be there helping them. I could see the gratitude andloveintheirfaceandthisletmeknowthatwesome how had given them hope. This entire experi-ence was meaningful.

One thing I will remember is the moment when I realized that packing health kits really made a dif-ference, and then to go to see the people that needed these kits really left an impression on my life. Spartanburg Methodist CollegeFrom the Alumni Office

James A. “Jimmy” Bellamy and Peggy White Bellamy visited SMC Jan. 23, 2006 – exactly 50 years after

meeting for the first time at registration in Walker Hall. Pictured above are the Bellamys in the Burgess Library, where Peggy worked as a student. The photo inset shows Jimmy and Peggy, then sophomores, in the 1958 Olympian.

A Special Anniversary...

As a Spartanburg Methodist College Alumnus, I know you hold a special place in your heart for SMC. I would like to encourage you to reconnect with your classmates. If you have any updated information on yourself, and/or your classmates, please pass that valuable information along to our office. We are collecting information on Alumni and their families for the next issue of Frontiers. We would love to share your exciting news, such as marriages, births, gathering, vacations and retirements, with other Alumni. This information will be printed in the “Class News” portion of future issues. We also encourage you to send in photographs to accompany your exciting news. I look forward to hearing from in the near future.

Sincerely,Leah L. Pruitt ‘98Director of Alumni Relations

“They had the boys on the right and the girls on the left,” Peggy recalled. On that fateful day Jimmy looked across to Peggy, who was standing in the women’s line. He asked her, “Where are you from?” Jimmy had traveled to Spartanburg from his hometown of Myrtle Beach, and Peggy was from nearby Gaffney. “I thought it would be nice 50 years later to come back where we met,” Jimmy said. The couple married on April 25, 1959, just a year after graduating from then-Spartanburg Junior College. Peggy says working in the library with former librarian, Verona Thomas, inspired her to continue her studies and become a librarian. After graduating from SJC, Peggy went on to Limestone College where she majored in English, and she then received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. Peggy noted that the library was much smaller then, occupying only the second floor of the present building. Administrative offices were located downstairs. While at SJC, Jimmy worked at Belk-Hudson in downtown Spartanburg, as well as the Colonial grocery store. Peggy recalled that every SJC student had a job in those days.Among the faculty members present at the time, Jimmy and Peggy fondly recalled taking classes under Dean A.G. Carter. Jimmy is retired from 42 years in the U.S. Postal Service, and Peggy retired after 37 years as a librarian at various Horry County schools. Both reside in Myrtle Beach. They have one daughter and three grandchildren living in Greenwood.

Honor your loved one with a personalized brick for our “Walk of Mem-ories.” Contact Leah L. Pruitt at (864) 587-4225 or [email protected] for more information and ordering. The Walk of Memories is lo-cated between the Walker and Montgomery buildings at SMC.
