BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag

A lot of vendors won’t supply plastic bags to customers, so bring a basket, eco-friendly reusable bags or a

backpack to store your purchases in. In addition

to fresh food and vegetables, eggs, dairy,

meat and bread, you can also find ready-to-eat

items. Bring a cool bag or pack ice blocks to keep your produce fresh until

you get home.

Cash

Most markets are cash only operations, so hit up an ATM before you

come to avoid using the market ATMs (high fees). Budgeting is also a great thing; only take as much as you have allotted for

the week.

Time – go early

or go late

If you want to beat the crowd and get the cream of the crop, going earlier is better. Popular items and the best selections

go quickly, so be on time and know what

you’re after. For a better deal, go later in the day.

Vendors and farmers would rather discount

their products than take them back home. Double check that your market

doesn’t have rules against end of day discounts

before heading along late.

Plan ahead and shop

smart

Knowing what you need can make a big

difference. Pre-planning meals can save you

money and time. Some items may seem the

same price as they are in supermarkets, but it’s the size, quality and freshness

of the produce that makes it superior.

Come hungry

The majority of markets have coffee and a wide range of food stalls. This is a great opportunity to try new food and have a cheap breakfast while

you’re doing your weekly shopping.

Shop around

If you’re new to the markets, we suggest doing a lap of all the stalls before choosing

where to buy your food. It’s the worst feeling,

after making a purchase, to see that a stall further

along has the same produce but is fresher

and cheaper.

Go beyond fresh

produce

In addition to yummy fresh produce, you can also find pre-loved and new books, clothes and crockery at the markets.
