These shops specialise in selling a broad range of fresh fruit and vegetables purchased from growers or wholesalers. Mostly they sell directly to private consumers, but some sales are to cafes and restaurants.
Often these retailers are located in large markets among other stallholders, but they’re also common in small shopping ‘strips’ and there’s usually one or two in large shopping centres.
> Although a smaller sector with around 220 businesses, four in every five of them turnover more than $200,000 – a much higher proportion than the retail average.
> With more than 1,300 employees – an average staff of six – there is a higher proportion of management positions than in retail generally.
> There is also a slightly higher proportion than average of staff aged 40 or older.
More focus on a ‘healthy eating’ lifestyle has increased the demand for fresh, high quality fruit and vegetables, while changes in home-based cooking has seen a surge in more ‘exotic’ produce such as bok choy or dragon fruit.
With strong competition from supermarkets and grocery stores, some outlets are now also offering other food products such as gourmet cheeses, honey and eggs.

Industry snap shot name: David Dinino age: 24
place of Work: get Fresh Findon role: Owner/Operator
Benefits: To achieve success, i’ve had to learn the variety of products, gain an understanding of the industry and its culture in order to get the best for the business and my customers.
As the owner of my own business the role varies on a day to day basis from going to the market to buy produce, quality control, stock rotation, customer service and management. My least favourite part of the job is the early starts at the market!
Working in the industry and owning my own business has made me more mature and i now recognise my responsibilities in the business - i’m accountable for what i do and say. i enjoy dealing with a range of people on a daily basis, and i’ve gained great friendships, some of which are with customers. i’d certainly encourage others to work in the industry as it’s varied, there are a lot of opportunities and it’s a lifelong career. My advice is to work hard and take the opportunities when you can.
Estimated salary range for this job role: $41K-$60K

name: Tim rugless age: 42
place of Work: brighton Foodland role: Director
Benefits: Working in the retail industry has shown how important it is to
be able to deal with all sorts of people and personalities. After finishing
school, i began working in the family business that had been in operation
for 40 years – at the bottom, sweeping floors! i progressed through
each area of the business and fully appreciate the different roles each
person plays, which is so important to the success of the business. i am
now managing all our key team members which is just as important as
controlling the financial side of the organisation. Although i didn’t do any
formal study, i did specific retail courses related to supermarkets and
personal development courses, with the best piece of advice being the
three 3D’s - Do it, delegate it or ditch it!
The fresh fruit and vegetable department is regarded as one of the most
important areas in our supermarket - its all about quality and freshness!
After 25 years, i still get pleasure from providing the best fresh food
possible and seeing happy staff and satisfied customers.

TASKS & WOrKing cOnDiTiOnSFruit and vegetable retailers depend on good presentation of high quality produce and customer loyalty.
Staff learn correct storage techniques – to keep produce as fresh as possible while avoiding spoilage or over-ripening – and how to arrange produce displays. good customer service will mean learning about all the different fruits and vegetables and how they should be stored or used at home.
Attention to personal hygiene and shop cleanliness is essential – fruit and vegetable stalls and shops need to comply with the Food Act and regulations.
Some staff may help with unloading produce or travelling to markets to help with purchasing.
