FRV December
12th club meet-
ing featuring
Dan Koniewicz!
Hello fellow FRV members and welcome to November. Having just returned from a great “Suckerfest Outing” up in St. Germain, I started to reflect on 2018 and how bad of a fishing season it was for many of us. For many of the people I have talked to the Muskie season was no up to normal. But being a lifelong Cubs fan, there is always wait to next year. Regarding the “Suckerfest Outing”, I think that the 9 of us that attended had a great time. Good meals, Drink and comradery. Thanks for Hugh, Rich, Ken, Mike, Frank & Todd for making this outing
one of the best of the year. Also a big thank you to our guest / past mem-bers Jim and Mike for attending. Like I eluded to earlier, fishing was not great, but, eight fish were caught. The biggest being a 40.5” caught on Boot Lake. If you have a chance to attend one of our outings next year, please make a point to do so. You will have a good time and will learn something new about Muskie fishing. Our next two speakers are Sean Bermingham in November speaker and myself in December. Please do not bring any tomatoes to the December meeting. At the December meet-ing we will be asking for non-perishable food donations at the door. We give these every year to the Elgin Woman’s Shelter organization. They tru-ly do need the help. Our next outing will be “The Last Fling” Down on Cave Run in Kentucky. The last opportunity to sign up for this outing will be at this upcoming November meeting. See myself at the next meeting for details. Regarding stocking, the chapter did stock 440 12 to 15 inch Wisconsin Strain muskies into the Chain on Monday October 15
th. I apol-
ogize that we did not get the word out to the membership. But, this had to be completed quickly without notice do to an expiring permit that we were not aware of when we ordered the fish. Also, our chapter was able to give the Chicagoland Chapter an extra $1,000 to help supplement the Lake Ge-neva stocking that took place in late October. The last note I would like to make is a big congratulations to Terry Magnusson on catching his first Muskie ever on the Popp's Outing. It was a 40 inch fish caught on Cal-dron. Until next month, keep a tight line and catch a big one.

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CORNER… Some Interesting Historical Trivia!! A name most anglers never came across Onesimus Ustonson, a
London tackle merchant back in 1810 who was the father of the multiplying winch. We now call it a
baitcasting reel. Ustonson artfully crafted his reel from brass more than two hundred years ago. Only
four of his reels are known to exist today worth thousands of dollars. Around the turn of the century a
Dr. James Henshall author of the “Book of Black Bass” insisted that the multiplying reel was an Ameri-
can invention, the creation of a Kentuckian George Sydner. Between 1810 and 1820, Sydner did indeed
produce the nation’s first baitcast reels, but many historian now think Sydner’s reels were patterned
from Ustonson’s design. The story goes on, according to an article that appeared in the “Art of Angling”, a book written by Thom-
as Barker in 1651 (England), describing a reel device attached to a rod used for fishing for pike. Other historians claim the use of
fishing reels in the thirteenth century by the Chinese? Another tidbit, an angler named James Chetham gave the following advice
for preserving worms. Take the sculls of animals, beat them into power, put this power in moss to form a bread for earth worms. “
Morbid Advice”. I hope you found this historical trivia interesting. My further articles will included more of the above. More re-
cent historical trivia, the FRV Chapter was founded in 1981 about 37 years ago in the back room of a bar in Elgin called the Blue
Moon. It is now one of the top four chapters in Muskies, Inc. At this past weekend fishing trip to St. Germain, Wisconsin
(Suckerfest 2018), I had the opportunity to talk with two members of the Headwaters Chapter, the second largest chapter in MI (355
plus members), several of whom have been to FRV monthly meeting and they said “Quote” that (FRV) probably has the best
monthly meetings of any chapter around! That is a nice compliment! SO, it is up to you to keep-up your membership and invites
other to our meetings. Let’s Keep FRV Strong (where have I heard those words?)
