Box File Description Date California at Davis, his nomination and appointment as founding Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, and the challenges in building a school of medicine that he faced on his arrival at Wright State. Dr. Beljan also gives his views on the interview process, the concept of a community-based school of medicine, and the political problems that he encountered in the development of the Wright State University School of Medicine.

1 3 John R. Beljan, M.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index This second interview with Dr. Beljan is in two parts. The first part is a continuation of the first interview in that Dr. Beljan continues his description of the political problems facing the School of Medicine's development when he arrived as founding Dean. He then goes on to discuss other possible dangers to development, the interview process for his position, and the roles of Miami University and Central State University in the development of the SOM. The second part of the interview deals with the organization of the School of Medicine, with particular attention to particular facets of the administrative structure of the School such as: key individuals on the Dean's staff such as Dr. Zapala [sic] and Edward Spanier; the concept of family medicine and its importance; resource allocation for the School; the place of the School in the administrative structure of the University; the inter-relationship between the area hospitals and the School; the role of the College of Science and Engineering in the School's development; recruiting the faculty; curriculum development and the development of the Admissions Committee and admissions policy of the School.

Beljan, M.D. Summary, Index In the fourth interview, Dr. Beljan discusses in-depth the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process and the various visits of the LCME to the Wright State University School of Medicine. The nature of the LCME, its powers, responsibilities, and focus are examined in detail by Dr. Beljan, as are his thoughts on the nature and function of the LCME in connection to the development of the Wright State School of Medicine.

Beljan, M.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index This fifth of six interviews with the founding Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, Dr. John Beljan, deals with two major areas. The first area is Faculty/Staff recruiting in which Dr. Beljan discusses the methods, priorities, and focuses of the recruiting efforts of the School of Medicine staff. Several key individuals are highlighted.

The second area deals with the development of the Residency Programs inherited and initiated by the Wright State University School of Medicine. Although each program is examined in turn, two distinctly different Residency Programs are highlighted, the Aerospace Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Programs.

Dr. Beljan discusses his thoughts on his inter-relationships with Wright State University President Dr. Robert Kegerreis, former Wright State University Provost Dr. Andrew Speigel, and others. Dr. Beljan also reflects on the past and present development of the School of Medicine and explores possible future goals and areas of development.

1 8 Bernadette Beljan Statement of Gift, Summary Index In this interview, Mrs. John Beljan discusses her thoughts and feelings about coming to Dayton, Ohio with her husband, Dean Beljan, and her role as the Dean's wife in promoting the School of Medicine. Mrs. Beljan also discusses the role she played in the recruiting of faculty for the Wright State University School of Medicine.

Kolmen, first Chairer of the Department of Physiology at the Wright State University School of Medicine, talks about his early career, academic background and his reasons for coming to Wright State University. He then goes on to discuss the state of development of the School of Medicine when he arrived at Wright State University in January, 1975 and his early tasks as department chairer [sic]. Dr. Kolmen discusses at length the development of the School of Medicine curriculum and the matrix departments in the School of Medicine, with emphasis on how these developments affected the university and the overall development of the School of Medicine and the College of Science and Engineering. The interview closes with a discussion of the recruiting methodology employed by the Physiology Department in hiring faculty.

1 10 Samuel N. Kolmen, Ph.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index The second interview with Dr. Samuel N. Kolmen takes as its central theme the development of the bylaws for the School of Medicine, which Dr. Kolmen worked on as one of his first priorities upon arriving at Wright State University in 1975. Areas covered under the bylaws theme include: establishment of committee constituencies within School of Medicine committees; the political structure of the School of Medicine; the non-tenure system of the School of Medicine; policymaking in the School; the impact of the bylaws on the development of the School of Medicine and its integration into the university community. Continuing the theme of integration, Dr. Kolmen discusses the "Nursing Controversy" and the role it played in bringing the School of Medicine faculty closer to the university faculty. Other themes brought out in this interview are: the responsibilities and accomplishments of Dr. Kolmen outside of his normal chairer's responsibilities that pertain to the School of Medicine; interrelationship between the Physiology Department and the University of Dayton; and Dr. Kolmen's thoughts on the nature of his relationship with former Dean Dr. John Beljan.

Kolmen, Ph.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index In this fourth and final interview with Dr. Samuel Kolmen, first Chairer [sic] of the School of Medicine's Department of Physiology, Dr. Kolmen outlines and discusses the organization and development of the Biomedical Ph.D. Program at Wright State University, a program he helped to initiate and develop. Dr. Kolmen discusses the following aspects/features of the Biomedical Ph.D. Program: factors considered in developing the Program; premises of the Program; individuals who contributed to the development of the Program; the budgeting and presentation of the program prospectus to the Regents Advisory Graduate Committee (RAGC) in Columbus; the development of supplemental features of the Program and the impact of the Program on accreditation, faculty development, and School of Medicine research efforts. Dr. Kolmen goes on to describe the major features of the program and its possibly serving as a model for similar Ph.D. programs at Wright State University.

Buzzard, Ph.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index This second in a series of interviews with Dr. David Buzzard, first Director of Communications for the Wright State University School of Medicine, is divided into two parts. The first part of the interview deals with the interactions of the School of Medicine and institutions outside of Wright State University; the area hospitals, the mergers with other major medical research organizations, the Drew Health Center, the Veterans Administration, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the development of the School of Medicine newsletter ("Vital Signs") and the student outreach programs of the School of Medicine.

The second part of the interview deals with the theme of the on-campus development of the School of Medicine, covering: internal program development in the School of Medicine Communications Department, the visits of the Liason [sic] Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the integration of the School of Medicine with the Wright State University campus, the Executive Committee of the School of Medicine, and the development of the School of Medicine Development Office. 1 16 Robert A. Stuhlman, D.V.M. Photo, Statement, Summary, Index, Vitae This is the first of two interviews with Dr. Robert Stuhlman. Dr. Stuhlman is the Director of the Laboratory Animal Resources and is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Teaching Laboratories in the Wright State University School of Medicine. In this interview, Dr. Stuhlman discusses the initial organization and development of both programs and the problems encountered in the various moves made by Dr. Stuhlman and his staff. Dr. Stuhlman also discusses the development of the staffs for the two sections within the School of Medicine and the philosophies under which they have grown during his tenure as director. Finally, Dr. Stuhlman ties his two sections development into the context of the overall School of Medicine development.

Particular attention is focused on his background, his coming to Wright State University, his initial activities and priorities as Health Sciences Librarian of a new School of Medicine, the development and growth of the Health Sciences Library, and his responsibilities and activities in the school and with the area hospitals. Important areas in the interview also include Mr. Palmer's perceptions of the overall School of Medicine development and his views on the future of the Wright State University School of Medicine.

She goes on to describe her responsibilities and duties. Mrs. Borum provides some fascinating insights into specific areas of the School of Medicine's development such as faculty and staff development, the visitations of the Liason [sic] Committee on Medical Education, and the leadership style of Dean John Beljan.

1 20 Richard DeWall, M.D. Photo, Statement of Gift, Summary, Index, Vitae This interview is with Dr. Richard DeWall, a prominent Dayton Cardio-thoracic surgeon. In this first interview Dr. DeWall discusses his background prior to coming to the Dayton area and his initial activities in the Cox Heart Institute and Kettering Memorial Hospital. He then goes on to describe how he first became interested in a school of medicine in Dayton, how he focused on Wright State University as the location for that school of medicine and his initial contacts with community and Wright State University leaders in which he lobbied for the school. In the second part of this interview, Dr. DeWall discusses the initiation and development of the proposal for the establishment of a Ph.D. program in Medical Sciences and how that evolved into the proposal for a school of medicine. Black discusses the growth and development of the medical community in the Dayton area from the 1950's to the development of the Wright State University School of Medicine. In the discussion Dr. Black emphasizes his role in the Montgomery County Medical Society and the reaction of the Society to the initiation and development of planning for the School of Medicine. In further discussion, Dr. Black talks about the establishment by the Montgomery County Medical Society (with Dr. Black as President) of the Dooley Committee, with an emphasis on the membership of the committee and the reaction of the area medical community to the committee's recommendation.

Black, M.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index In this third of three interviews, Dr. Black first discusses the activities and influences of Dr. Richard DeWall, prominent Dayton heart surgeon and early advocate of development of a Dayton School of Medicine. Dr. Black goes on to describe Dayton area reaction to the School of Medicine feasibility/suitability study authored by Dr. DeWall and Wright State University Dean of Science Dr. Robert Conley. Dr. Black devotes the second half of the interview to his interaction with the School of Medicine here at Wright State University. C.J. McLin Statement of Gift, Summary, Index In this interview Ohio State Assembly Representative C. J. McLin discusses his involvement with the movement to bring the School of Medicine to the Dayton area. He begins with his background and activities as a State Representative prior to the drive for a School of Medicine, and continues with an analysis of the political fight in the State Legislature for the School. Representative McLin describes the reasons for his determination that a medical school be established in Dayton and the role that the School of Medicine should play in the black community in Dayton. Representative McLin then discusses what he feels has been a lack of commitment on the part of the Wright State School of Medicine to the black community since its development.

Sawyer, Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, Dean Sawyer discusses his background prior to coming to Wright State University. Dean Sawyer then goes on to describe his tenure as Chairman of the Department of Microbiology/Immunology at the School of Medicine at Indiana University. Dean Sawyer discusses his administrative and leadership style at Indiana University and his challenges as Chairman. In the third part of the interview Dean Sawyer recalls his thoughts on applying for the Deanship of a school of medicine. He recounts his ideas and thoughts on the subject of "progressivism" in medical education and how it related to his choice of medical schools. He then discusses his application process to Wright State University for the Deanship of the Wright State University School of Medicine.

In this third interview Dean Sawyer discusses in-depth his experiences, thoughts and impressions as a candidate for the Deanship of the School of Medicine. Dean Sawyer describes his three visits as a candidate to Wright State University and Dayton and his thoughts and impressions after each visit. Dean Sawyer then goes on to describe his decision to accept the Deanship in terms of its advantages and disadvantages. 1 58 Robert J. Kegerreis, M.D. Statement of Gift, Summary, Index This is the fourth in a series of interviews with the President of Wright State University, Dr. Robert J. Kegerreis. The first part of the interview deals with the search for the first Dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Kegerreis focuses on the different aspects of the search, including the composition of the Search Committee; the criteria developed by the Committee for selecting the Dean; the process of screening the candidate; and an analysis by President Kegerreis of the first three candidates. Dr. Kegerreis closes this first portion of the interview with a discussion of the reasoning behind the Committee's and the Board of Trustee's choice of Dr. John Beljan. Conley completes his discussion of his involvement in the planning for and development of the Wright State University School of Medicine. Dr. Conley begins the interview with his move from the deanship of the College of Science and Engineering to an appointment as the first Vice-President of Health Affairs Planning at Wright State University. He discusses his responsibilities as Vice-President and his role in the development of other health education programs at Wright State University. Dr. Conley then moves into an analysis of his interactions with the Ohio Board of Regents during the period of his work on gaining approval for Wright State University's plans to develop the School of Medicine. In particular, Dr. Conley focuses on the development process of the School of Medicine's physical plant and how the Ohio Board of Regents impacted that development. Some of the major aspects covered in this discussion include: funding for graduate medical education; the accreditation of the residency programs; contractual relationships between the School of Medicine and the area hospitals where the residencies are located; and the Residency Policy Committee. In the second part of the interview, Mr. Durko discusses his office's impact on the recruiting of faculty for the School of Medicine and the reallocation of resources to support recruiting.
