George Heider, of Miami Springs, and Milko Brito, from Miami, won the net division shooting a three round total of 199. In the two-man scramble, the pair recorded a 65 then a 71 in the alternate shot. They came out in the final round and fired a 63 in the final 18 holes of best ball. Heider and Brito placed second in last year’s net division of the Two-Man Shoot-Out.

“We had to wait on every shot! What took so long?”

How many times have you wondered what was taking that

group ahead of you so long to play? Were they slow? Was it the group in front of them or the one in front of them? How come they didn’t invite your group to play through? Were they lining up every putt from both sides? Did they think they were playing for a million bucks?

The biggest problem in golf to-day is pace of play. Many organiza-tions and clubs have addressed this problem by instituting policies for pace of play ranging from player timing checkpoints to actually hav-ing a group punch a time clock after each nine holes. Many have had success while others have not been so fortunate.

The Florida State Golf Asso-ciation has revised its Pace of Play

Policy for competitions conducted in 2004, aligning itself more closing with the policy used by the USGA. We will continue to use officials to monitor groups without using color coded flags or cards and you will not see a time clock next to the ninth or eighteenth green for each group to punch.

The two main factors in pace of play are the size of the groups and the interval between starting times. Have you ever noticed how traffic slows to a crawl on a busy interstate? If you put a thousand cars bumper to bumper on the in-terstate, it’s going to be slow going. If you were to let those same thou-sand cars get started with a quarter of a mile in between each of them, there would be no traffic!

In a theoretical world, if you could play as a onesome, there would be no time wasted waiting for the other player or players to search for their ball, go through their routine, line up a putt or hit a shot. It might not be too enjoyable

but it would be fast! The next best thing for pace of play is a twosome. Generally, twosomes are utilized in the major championship events and tours of the world over the final rounds. Dollars and cents usu-ally prohibit a public or private club from using this grouping size. You just can not get as many players on the golf course in a day and thus the revenue stream diminishes.

The FSGA currently uses groups of three at nine minute intervals for individual events and groups of four with ten minute intervals in four-ball or team events. Using smaller groups helps, but if the in-terval is not large enough between groups, you are starting players in that traffic jam instead of allowing the quarter mile gap!

Try it if you can. If you can in-crease the interval between groups and reduce the size of the groups while staying out of bankruptcy, you will find that the pace of play will improve and you will enjoy the game of golf much more!

FSGA Conducts Open Qualifi ersAfter 17 local and one sectional qualifying sites in Florida, three players advanced to the 104th U.S. Open Cham-pionship. Six-time major champion Nick Faldo shared medalist honors with Camilo Villegas and Tripp Isen-hour at sectional qualifying at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando to continue on to the Open.

Faldo, who sank a 6-foot putt for birdie on his 36th hole at Lake Nona to secure his spot in the 2004 U.S. Open, recorded an 81 in the first round of the Open and came back to fire a 70 in the second round. Faldo, the winner of three British Opens and three Masters, said of playing in the sectional qualifying, “I wanted to play and my goal was to get to Shinnecock and I’m proud of this accomplish-ment.” Also advancing after shooting 139 at Lake Nona were Camilo Villegas, of Colombia, and PGA Tour player Tripp Isenhour, from Orlando. Villegas, who was re-cently named first team All-American at the University of Florida, shot 9-over at Shinnecock while Isenhour finished the Championship at 7-over.

The sectional qualifier at Lake Nona featured 61 play-ers hoping to reach the Championship. This was one of 13 sectional qualifiers across the country. The FSGA also administered 17 local qualifiers across the state, more than any other state.

Mid-Am Four-Ball North & SouthKen Godwin and Kelly Gosse won the Florida State Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North Championship as the South Florida team of Bill Griffith and Marc Rosen-baum captured the South Championship. The North Championship was played at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club and Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club hosted the South Championship on May 29-30.

Ken Godwin, from Ocala, and Kelly Gosse, from Inverness, won the North Championship shooting a 68-67—135. In a tie for second place firing a two-day total 137 was the team from Tampa, John Gabler and Frank Griffin, and first round leaders, Andy Higgins and Mike Stevens, both of Ponte Vedra Beach. Curtis Madson, of Mount Dora, and Doug Snoap, of Apopka, finished three strokes back from the leaders shooting a 70-68—138. In the South Championship, Bill Griffith, of Mi-ami Shores, and Marc Rosenbaum, from Hollywood, claimed the top spot after shooting 68-63—131. Last year in the South Championship, they tied for fourth place. Tom Fiocchi, of Palm Beach Gardens, and Mi-chael Nealy, from Boca Raton, beat their performance last year as they fired a pair of 66’s to place second in this year’s Championship. Last year, Fiocchi and Nealy placed third in the South Championship. The Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North Championship featured 52 teams while the South had 38 teams. Both North and South sites are 36 holes of four-ball stroke play. In four-ball stroke play, two competitors play as partners, each playing his own ball. The lower score of the partners is the score for the hole. Amelia Island Plantation will host the 2005 Mid-Am Four-Ball North while the South will be played at Inverrary Country Club in Lauderhill.

Jr ChampionshipThe Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe in Windermere will host the 50th Florida State Junior Champi-onship on August 2-3. Entries closed on June 9 with more than 250 en-tries received. For the first time, the FSGA is holding qualifiers for the State Ju-nior Championship. Competitors will attempt to qualify at eight sites across the state in 18 holes of stroke play. The Championship will be 36 holes of stroke play over the two-days. The Championship field will feature 90 of the top male amateur golfers in the state including quali-fiers and exempt players. The field is divided into two age divisions; 13-15 junior division and 16-18 regular di-vision. Working closely with the AJGA, the Champion of the Regular divi-sion receives three exemptions into AJGA events. The top five from the Regular division receive two exemp-tions and the top ten finishers will receive one exemption. Additionally, the top finishers will be invited to compete in the Florida State Junior Match Play Invitational at Lake Nona Golf Club.

Future of Golf Foundation EstablishedThe Florida State Golf Association has formed the Future of Golf Foun-dation to benefit junior golfers and the future of golf in Florida. The FSGA has committed $250,000 over five years for the Future of Golf Foun-dation. The Future of Golf Foundation will provide college scholarships to junior golfers and assist juniors with entry and travel expenses to USGA National tournaments. The Founda-tion will also provide support to ju-nior programs and other golf related causes. The FSGA scholarship program benefits member clubs, their employ-ees and dependents. In the past year, the FSGA has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships and provided an additional $20,000 in grants. The Foundation will be funded by contributions and fundraising pro-grams including FSGA membership initiatives. All membership dollars above the Regular $45 membership will go to the Foundation. In addition, FSGA competitors and visitors to the website www.fsga.org will soon have the opportunity to donate through their tournament entry or purchases on the website. The FSGA is now accepting donations to the Future of Golf Foundation to be distributed to deserving juniors this fall. To contribute, please call the FSGA office at (813) 632-3742. The FSGA is also accepting applicants for the Future of Golf Foundation. To apply, please log on to www.fsga.org or call the FSGA for an applica-tion.
