Description:
UMBCXCTF"s preview of this weekend's meet
8
The UMBC Outdoor Track & Field team opens up this weekend, taking part in the Florida State University Relays in Tallahassee, Florida. A small, but elite group of athletes will take part in the two day meet, coupled with what is expected to warm temperatures, we could start to see the record books begin to get rewritten. A couple weeks after participating in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship meet, Mercedes Jackson begins working her way back to the National Meet. Last year the final qualifier out of the East Region ran 11.49 to move on to the National Outdoor Meet. Jackson’s best 100 meter time last year was an 11.66, however when one looks to her .14 second improvement over 60 meters, it puts her in range of making the field. She is entered in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Jackson will be joined in the sprints by Kirsten Jones who had her best meet ever and one of the best in school history at the ECAC meet. She broke the school record in the 400 meters (55.80), ran the third fastest time in the 200 meters (24.52), and anchored the school record 4x400 meter relay with a split in the high 53, low 54 second range. Focusing on the 400 meters on a track made for sprinting, the outdoor record of 56.00, one of the oldest on the books, might be in jeopardy. Denny Long and Trae Proctor are both coming off strong indoor track seasons after injuries curtailed and prevented from competing in last outdoor season. Long will be looking to make a mark on the All Time lists in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Proctor will be making a move on the school record in the 110 meter hurdles after finishing .04 off the record during his sophomore year. Having chopped .13 off the indoor record over 60 meters, Proctor will be aiming to be the first Retriever under 14 seconds. Another hurdles record could fall, this time in the hands of Paulette Fogle, who reset the 400 meter mark last year down to 1:01.97. The conference champ and school record holder in the 500 meters, she will not only set her sights on going under the one minute barrier, but also punching a ticket to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The 800 meters will feature some of the premier distance runners on the UMBC team. For the women, school record holder Sarah Daly, All Conference Runner Cody Mezebish, and 4 th place 1,000 meter runner MK Kulp will all toe the line in the two lap race. The men’s 800 meter run will feature Conference Champion Andrew Smith who will also run the open 400 meter dash on the first day of competition. Andrew Keresztes will join him in 800 meters but will lead off with the 1500 meters on the first day. In the throwing events the expectation is that three school records will fall by the end of the weekend including the javelin (see side bar), indoor school record holder Yao Adantor making a run at the shot put record, and Thor Serafenas gets his first crack at the school mark in his specialty of the hammer throw. On the women’s side, Amanda Deller and Nneoma Edokobi will be looking for Conference leading marks in both the shot and hammer throw. The jumps will feature Conference Champion Shiomia Obemeata in his quest for fifty feet in the triple jump and an NCAA East Region bid. Mo Drammeh will take his first jumps in the high jump looking for his first IC4A Outdoor qualification while Rentzsch will take a break from the throwing events (javelin, discus, & shot) to do the long jump. Barring an injury on the way to the track, severe weather, or an asteroid falling on the track at the Florida State University Relays, look to the javelin results for a new school record. Freshman Vincent Rentzsch brings with him a personal best throw of 213-10 in the event with a current school record of 183-10. While he won’t be on a full approach, he should be the first Retriever over two hundred feet. Vincent Rentzsch University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) 1000 Hilltop Circle Baltimore, MD 21250

Barring an injury on the way to the track, severe weather, or an asteroid

falling on the track at the Florida State University Relays, look to the

javelin results for a new school record. Freshman Vincent Rentzsch

brings with him a personal best throw of 213-10 in the event with a

current school record of 183-10. While he won’t be on a full

approach, he should be the first Retriever over two hundred feet.

Andrew Keresztes had solid experience in the 1,000 meter run from high school where he had finished fourth in New York State in a time that would have earned him an IC4A qualification. As he progressed throughout the year he turned into a savvy racer that allowed him to control races. At the America East Championships he ran an 800 meter leg on the DMR that pulled away from the field. He then followed it up the next day with a second place finish in the 1,000 meter run and a leg on the Conference Championship in the 4x800 meter relay. Finally, to top off the season, he ran a blistering and #2 All Time 2:26. 77 in the prelims of the 1,000 meters at the IC4A Championships, to advance to the finals. Entering outdoors, expect to see him splitting duties in the 800 meter and the 1500 meter runs.

It’s easy to be overshadowed by Amanda Deller in the throws events, but freshman Nneoma Edokobi has done an excellent job carving out her niche. Having only thrown thirty-nine feet once in high school and having never thrown the weight prior to college, she quickly made improvements throughout the season. By season’s end she had pushed her shot put best up to 42-2.75 (#7 All Time), which was good enough to earn All-Conference honors by finishing third at the America East Championships. She coupled that with an in-circle/in-competition change in the weight throw that moved her up to #7 All Time in the weight (47-5.75), but more importantly moved her up to seventh at the AEC meet out of the unseeded flight. With the move to outdoor track, look for continued improvement in the shot, while taking on a new event in the hammer throw.
