In my life, I often forget how influential saints are in our faith, and in today’s Gospel, I’m reminded of an important saint, St. John the Baptist. Luke says that John was the son of Zechariah, a priest at the temple of Jerusalem, who was filled with the Holy Spirit even as he was in his “mother’s womb” (Luke 1:13, 15).
Zechariah prophesied that his son would be “called the prophet of the Most High who will go before the Lord to prepare his ways” (Luke 1:76), and the Lord he was talking about was Jesus Christ.
John prepared for the coming of Jesus by going to the wilderness of Judea and devoted himself to prayer and the Word of God. He was led to the wilderness to “get away” from the distractions of life, and which prepared him for a ministry that would change people to realize that the Messiah has come!
During these times when a king wanted a tour of his kingdom, he would send a courier to prepare the way. John is the courier and he announced that the Messiah King (Jesus) was coming!
We can learn from John’s example and ask ourselves during this Advent if we have we honestly prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ every day, and when He comes again. John tells us that we start with conversion (receiving God’s Word in our hearts and changing our routines) and repentance (turning to God in everything we do and avoiding sin).
May we be devoted to prayer and the Word of God as John was, and may the Word change our lives to be faithful followers! • Pray for Pope Francis (as he travels to Greece) and those who lead
the Church, especially the priests of our diocese.
• Pray for those that have been affected by natural disasters and acts of violence (COVID-19; explosion in Munich; storms in Egypt; Jerusalem attack; attack at a Michigan school; homicides in Columbus).
• Congratulations to Henry Julien Hauck and Chambers Randel Vaugh who were baptized this weekend! May they continue their journey of faith as members of the Body of Christ!
• We will have Mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Mary on the following dates and times: o December 7 – 6:30 p.m. o December 8 – 8:30 a.m. o December 8 – 6:30 p.m.
• During the Third Sunday of Advent, the Latino community will also celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe at their usual 12:30 p.m. Mass! Before that, there will be a Marian procession with the recitation of the Rosary at 12:15 p.m. around the block. All are welcome to attend!
• A reminder that we have weekly Adoration/Benediction with Confessions every Tuesday during Advent before the Tuesday night Mass from 5:15-6:15 p.m.! Please come and spend an hour with the Lord!
• A reminder that German Village Lights is this Sunday, December 5 with a concert by the Maennerchor and Bell Choir at St. Mary! We will have Santa, a live reindeer and a spaghetti dinner! Please come and enjoy all the happenings around the Village!

En mi vida, a menudo olvido cuán influyentes son los santos en nuestra fe, y en el evangelio de hoy, recuerdo a un santo importante, San Juan Bautista. Lucas dice que Juan era el hijo de Zacarías, un sacerdote en el templo de Jerusalén, que fue lleno del Espíritu Santo incluso cuando estaba en el “vientre de su madre” (Lucas 1:13, 15).
Zacarías profetizó que su hijo sería “llamado profeta del Altísimo, que irá delante del Señor para preparar sus caminos” (Lucas 1:76), y el Señor del que estaba hablando era Jesucristo.
Juan se preparó para la venida de Jesús yendo al desierto de Judea y se dedicó a la oración y a la palabra de Dios. Fue llevado al desierto para “alejarse” de las distracciones de la vida, y eso lo preparó para un ministerio que cambiaría a la gente para que se diera cuenta de que el Mesías ha venido.
Durante estos momentos en que un rey quería hacer un recorrido por su reino, enviaba un mensajero para preparar el camino. ¡Juan es el mensajero y anunció que venía el Rey Mesías (Jesús)!
Podemos aprender del ejemplo de Juan y preguntarnos durante este Adviento si estamos honestamente preparados para la venida de Jesucristo todos los días, y cuando Él regrese. Juan nos dice que comenzamos con la conversión (recibir la palabra de Dios en nuestro corazón y cambiar nuestras rutinas) y el arrepentimiento (volvernos a Dios en todo lo que hacemos y evitar el pecado).
¡Que seamos dedicados a la oración y a la Palabra de Dios como lo fue Juan, y que la Palabra cambie nuestras vidas para ser seguidores fieles! • Ore por el Papa Francisco (y viaja a Grecia) y los que dirigen la
Iglesia, especialmente los sacerdotes de nuestra diócesis.

The annual award will be presented on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Men’s Luncheon held at St. Patrick Church in downtown Columbus. The Catholic Man of the Year is awarded to one layman who, through his daily actions, words, and prayers, exemplifies the “good and faithful servant.” The recipient will have the opportunity to share his personal testimony during the ceremony. Ya que estamos en medio de esto ahora mismo, consideremos otra clase de regalos aparte de los que podemos comprar, envolver y colocar bajo el árbol. Busquemos los regalos llenos de gracia que nuestro amado Señor nos ofrece: su palabra y eucaristía, sus sagrados sacramentos, su sabiduría. Que estos regalos nos fortalezcan para amar y servir al Señor y a nuestro prójimo de una forma mejor y con humildad. Mientras avanzamos con nuestra iniciativa Presencia Real, Futuro Real, consideremos en cómo utilizar estos dones que Dios nos ha dado para ayudar en este esfuerzo y apoyar a nuestros párrocos en el trabajo y decisiones que se darán en el futuro. ADOPTA UNA FAMILIA Es esa época del año nuevamente para ayudar a algunas de las familias de St. Mary School en Navidad. Colgaremos adornos en el árbol de Navidad en la parte trasera de la iglesia en noviembre. Este año le pediremos que compre tarjetas de regalo para los niños y sus familias. Cada adorno tendrá una solicitud familiar de una tarjeta de regalo de Kroger, Giant Eagle, Target o Walmart o una solicitud de un niño con su edad y sexo para la compra de una tarjeta de regalo únicamente. Habrá una caja de recolección marcada para dejar las tarjetas junto al árbol. La fecha límite para devolver la (s) tarjeta (s) de regalo es el 18 de diciembre para permitir que nuestras familias la distribuyan y recojan a tiempo. ¡Gracias por su generosidad de antemano!
