FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My prayer is that each of you have a blessed and holy Christmas surrounded by those you love…….The parish office is closed from noon on December 23rd and will re-open Tuesday, January 3rd. I will be here the entire time and will check for phone messages. If there is any emergency, you can reach me on my home phone—454-4032…..Our Scripture readings today are particularly powerful and uplifting. The first reading from Isaiah takes on a hymn-like quality as it anticipates the coronation of a king for the Israelites. At this future time, when the Messiah reigns, all burdens and yokes will be removed and the taskmaster’s rod

will be forever smashed. On this holy night and day we hear in Isaiah’s words a prophecy fulfilled in Je-sus…...Our second reading is a brief excerpt from the letter of Paul to Titus. This letter, along with the letter to Timothy are called the Pastoral Epistles. Timothy presided over the church in Ephesus and Titus over the church on the island of Crete. While Paul devotes a letter to Titus, Luke, in his Acts of the Apostles, as he traces the early church, never mentions him. Titus was with Paul and Barnabas in the year 50 at the Council of Jerusalem (which settled the question as to whether Christians had to observe Jewish laws) and was then sent by Paul to Corinth. Paul tells Titus that he is to leave the care of the church in Crete in the hands of two disciples whom Paul is sending and he is to meet Paul in Nicolopis. In today’s excerpt, Paul uses a single 75 word sentence to allude to Christ’s birth, his death and his anticipated return. Jesus, born in the flesh in Bethlehem, is now born in spirit in the heart of anyone who seeks him…..Our Gospel story is found only in Luke—he alone tells us of Jesus being born in a stable, with animals, angels on high and shepherds. No other gospel mentions this. Luke often uses the imagery of angels to highlight important events in Jesus’ life and nowhere are they as abundant than on this holy night. In Matthew’s Gospel—and only in Matthew– will we find the story of the Magi. Remember that each Gospel author writes to a different audience with a different theme in mind. Matthew is writing to Jewish people living in present day Damascus, Syria and he tries to point out to them that the Jewish people missed the coming of Christ; and it took these magicians—these pagan magicians – to recognize him. Luke, on the other hand, portrays a Jesus who is totally and utterly powerless, a Jesus who identifies with the poor, the outcasts, the lowly and so his Jesus is born in a stable, among animals and first worshipped by the lowest of the people—shepherds …… Starting next week, our bulletin will be published by a new company. The company we have been using has been purchased by a larger company, and this merger allows us a great many options for the bulletin that we have not had in the past. We can print color photographs, etc. Be patient with us as we get used to this new format, but I think you’ll be pleased…...I mentioned last week that we are working on a way for pa-rishioners to indicate that they would like their weekly or monthly contribution automatically deducted from their checking account, thus saving you have to write a check or use cash each time. As soon as that is ready, we’ll announce it…...On a lighter side, found on the church sign of the Greater Pleasant View Baptist Church is “Now’s A Good Time To Visit. Our Pastor’s On Vacation!”…..As you know, we soon begin 2012, the year in which we will observe the 175th anniversary of the founding of St. Patrick’s Parish. Not only will we witness the restoration of the church interior, but we are planning a special celebration in October. We will have a Saturday evening Mass followed by cocktails and dinner at the Bayfront Convention Center. The evening promises to be a delightful celebration. Invitations and details will go out later in the year…... The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate is reporting that seminary enrollment in the United States is up for the first time since 1990. For the 2010-11 year, there were 3,608 seminarians, a net increase of 125. In addition, the report states that 75,431 lay people are studying at theological schools seeking degrees in divinity, etc., a slight increase over previous years. We still have to contrast these numbers with those of the past. In 1960, there were 59,000 American Catholic priests. Today there are 40,000. In 1960, there were 68,000 American seminarians; today there are 3,608. And while that number shows a slight increase over recent years, it still lags far behind the numbers of years past, and now one in every 6 priests in the US is foreign born…...Parish closings continue throughout the country with Detroit just closing 48 parishes. This comes on top of their having closed 40 five years ago. In Bos-ton, the number of parishes is being reduced from 290 to 125!! The archdiocese reports that only 16% of Catho-lics now attend Mass, a figure directly attributed to the abuse scandal and the cover-up leadership of then Cardi-nal Bernard Law. After he resigned in 2002, the archdiocese paid out $85 million to settle more than 500 law-suits…..I use the Gannon Rec Center and recently picked up a copy of the Gannon Knight, their weekly newspa-per. I was amazed that almost 50% of the articles were about the outreach that Gannon students are doing in the Erie community. One told of a trade fair which raised $2,500 to buy food baskets for recently relocated Nepalese families. Another told of students volunteering at Emmaus Ministries, another of students donating so that less fortunate inner city children would have Christmas presents. Really nice to see the Gospel in action and nice to see that our Catholic college is such a vital part of our neighborhood.

ChristmasChristmasChristmasChristmas Each of us can identify with a character in the Christmas Gospels. Some of us are the innkeeper, un- able to do much, but generous with what we have. Others are the shepherds, nervous and uncertain. Some might be the magi, searching for God. Some are like Joseph and Mary, faithful and true. Each of these characters tell us about faith responses to the Presence of Christ among us. We measure faith not by what we profess, but by what we do. Our actions speak louder than words.. The message of Christmas is one that we must proclaim by word and deed. Welcoming the stranger, feeding the hungry, visiting the lonely and rejected, and sharing our time are the gifts that keep on giving. We imitate the Christ Child, born in a stable, yet destined for Heaven. In our own poverty we are made rich as we share what we have received. So in the lights, see the LightLightLightLight. In the presents find the PresencePresencePresencePresence. In the hymns and carols, and cards and shopping, see and hear the message that all the world knows. Jesus has comeJesus has comeJesus has comeJesus has come and He has made all the difference.and He has made all the difference.and He has made all the difference.and He has made all the difference.
