Life lessons from the busboy Darren Walker is the president of the Ford Founda-
tion, one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations. With an endowment of $13 billion, the Ford Foundation last year made some 1,300 grants totaling more the $650 million, to sup-port the work of organizations around the world tackling justice issues surrounding the economy, the environment, education and technology. Walker sees the foundation’s work as trying to improve the life for people who, in his words, are “invisible in our society.” People like the child he once was. He was born in a charity hospital in Louisiana and raised in a rural town in Texas. He went to public schools, attended col-leges on scholarship, then went to New York to practice law, eventually moving into investment banking. On Wall Street, Walker made money — and makes no apologies: “Growing up poor [you] never want to be poor again, and to have clarity about that.” But Walker walked away from Wall Street and went to work for a nonprofit economic develop-ment organization in Harlem. From there, he moved on to an executive role at the Rockefeller Foundation, and then the Ford Foundation, becoming president in 2013. In an interview in The New York Times [September 29, 2019], Walker said the experience that most prepared him to be president of the Ford Foundation was working as a busboy when he was thirteen. “When you work as a busboy, you are the lowest person in the organization. You are invisible, and relevant only to the extent that you are cleaning up after people and taking away the things they discard. No one acknowledges you, no one speaks to you, no one recognizes your dignity. There was something about being rendered invisible and the pernicious-ness of the systems that render too many people invisible that has informed how I think about our work at Ford. “For me, this question of how I settled into philanthropy is one that I struggle with, because there is an enormous amount of privilege [among Americans]. And so the question is, what are we doing with our privilege?” Today, Jesus begins his preaching life, proclaiming his vision of the “kingdom of heaven.” That vision is illuminated by the “great light” of God’s justice and mercy that enables us to see ourselves and one another in all our dignity and goodness, in all our brokenness and failings. In the light of God’s Christ, no one is so “invisible” as to be beyond the love of God, no one is so “privileged” as to be above the demanding work of Gospel compassion and justice. As we accompany Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel in the year ahead, may we walk with the humility and in-sight of Darren Walker’s 13-year-old busboy, embracing the hope that we can restore and re-create our world by God’s grace.

A Handbell Choir training/practice session at Sts. Peter & Paul church on Thursday, January 30, 6:30pm Let’s ring in the new year by trying to learn an instrument that will resonate with you internally, and to others, ex-ternally! Last October, we began forming a Bell Choir for the grouping. On December 24
th for
the 6:15pm Mass, five bell choir members, a guest ringer, and the director presented 3 carols with good synchroni-zation. Even so, though, we are still seeking a few more ringers.
Handbell training involves learning technique, read-ing rhythms, and ringing simple hymns. When a practice is held at Sts. Peter & Paul we will utilize the room down-stairs in the church. For a future rehearsal at Holy Fami-ly, St. Cecilia or St. Felix churches, we could possibly use the social halls. We convene about every other week or 2 times per month. We plan to have the Bell Choir participate at Mass in a church of our grouping about every 2 months from late Feb. to June this school year. If you are interest-ed in learning to ring handbells, please attend the next rehears-al or contact Ken Hand at 724-544-4337 or [email protected].
Also, on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 PM, a won-derful group of people meet in the Rel. Ed Center to prepare for, study and reflect on the upcoming Sun-day Gospel. You are most welcome to join this group or just to come periodically. Fr. Paul and Fr. Mark will alternate as Facilitators of this group until a new facilitator can be found.

Dear Parishioners: Catholic Schools Week begins today. There are many activities going on this week to which the pub-
lic is invited. The school is always available for tours and shadowing, just call Mrs. Baldrige, the Principal. I hope as time goes on and we become one Parish, that the school will be a viable option for all our families. As well, I hope it won’t just be called “your school” but “our school”. Already, there are students from many other parishes in the school, even non-Catholic families. So, in that sense, it already is a regional school, even though it still carries the original Saints Peter and Paul name.
I am also very excited about the new Youth Ministry program beginning tonight. We were chosen by
the Diocese to receive a grant to help with the expenses of setting up a Youth Ministry Program. Very won-derful news! A group of interested parents got together with Danielle Simoni, our youth minister, to study var-ious options and ideas. “Edge” was the one believed to be the best fit for our grouping.
Parents, Grandparents, Guardians and older siblings, please encourage attendance at these activities.
Thirty years from now, these young people will be the leaders of our new parish. It’s important that they be formed now and be helped to embrace the future of who and what our parish can be. They’re all great kids. If we can get them together past these imaginary “Berlin Walls” of boroughs, schools and old rivalries, they will have so much to bring to each other and can become lasting and life-long friends.
Our next joint Pastoral Council meeting for our grouping is Monday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m. at St.
Cecilia following 7:00 p.m. Mass. Fr. Bob
