December 17, 2017 Religious

Education Bulletin Announcements

Advent Reconciliation Service Every student in the Religious Education Program is encouraged to attend the Advent Reconciliation Service on Monday, December 18th at 6:30 pm. There will be at least thirteen priests here for the Service and this is an excellent opportunity, not just for the First Communion Students, but all the Religious Education Students to attend Reconciliation. Living Nativity We are preparing for this year’s Living Nativity and volunteers are needed. On Christmas Eve from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm and from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm we’ll be presenting the Nativity Story in both Spanish and English, plus singing Christmas Carols in front of the church. Besides volunteers we’ll need animals and food for the animals. Those interested in helping please contact Erick Martinez at [email protected] or Walter Lujan at [email protected]. Religious Education Holiday Class Schedule Religious Education classes will resume on Sunday, January 7th and Tuesday the 9th and the Youth Group will meet on Monday the 8th. This gives everyone ample time to volunteer for the Living Nativity.

Third Sunday of Advent Last week our readings urged us to cast off sin and to pursue holiness eagerly. God’s grace helps us do this and prepares us for limitless, everlasting glory. Today’s readings confirm the great joy of this endeavor and provide specific advice on how to proceed: by becoming poor. The prophet Isaiah describes the savior who comes “to bring glad tidings to the poor.” We are the poor people in need of glad tidings. Following the example of John the Baptist, we acknowledge that we are poor; we are “not worthy” of the Lord’s attention. Even so, Jesus delights in caring for us. Recognizing how poor we are, and yet how great is God’s love for us, we can only “rejoice always,” as Saint Paul advises. We continue our Advent journey, becoming poor by emptying our hearts of sin and giving thanks to God for helping us grow in holiness.

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Children who are poor make toys out of the unlikeliest things: milk cartons, nails, bottle caps, sticks, plastic bags, corn cobs, clothespins. Folks who have plenty consider these things trash—in fact, some poor children literally make their toys out of trash. Their abject need gives them a different perspective, seeing blessing where the rich see only waste. Material poverty is a scourge on our planet, and we must never make excuses for it. We must work tirelessly for decent conditions for every human person. As we work, we can learn from the special perspective of our brothers and sisters who do not have enough to live. We can see how depending on oth-ers for resources can transform a rich person’s trash into a poor child’s treasure.

O n December 4th, San Felipe de Neri School teachers competed in a fun door decora ng compe on to celebrate the beginning of the Advent season. The doors were judged by gracious San Felipe de Neri Parish office staff and gi shop staff. Thank you to our San Felipe de Neri Gi Shop for providing the beau ful prizes for our teachers. Here are the winners: Honorable Men on- Pre-K and 2nd grade, Third place-6th grade, Second place-Kindergarten, and First place (pictured below) - 5th grade.
