BERNARDINI COLT TOPS SESSION AT $600,000By Ron Mitchell

A Bernardini colt from the family of top handicap horse Frosted was purchased by Ben Glass on

behalf of Gary and Mary West for $600,000 to top the Sept. 19 session of the Keeneland September year-ling sale, in which the numbers dipped slightly.

and they are happy to spend the money. The compe-tition was good."

With the sale transitioning into Book 4 for the Sept. 20 session, Russell added there are still a lot of buyers who haven't filled their orders.

The Bernardini colt, consigned as Hip 1928 by Tay-lor Made Sales Agency on behalf of Godolphin, was produced from the winning Unbridled’s Song mare With Sugar On Top, a half sister to Frosted, a son of Tapit who won his third grade I in the Whitney Stakes Aug. 6 at Saratoga Race Course. Fast Cookie, the dam of Frosted and With Sugar On Top, is a multiple grade II-winning daughter of Deputy Minister bred and raced by Bob McNair's Stonerside Farm, which was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley in September 2008.

"He was an athletic horse who had a great walk on him," said Glass. "He looked like he would be an early horse; the kind of horse the Glasses like. He stood out so we had to step it up (in price). We got lucky."

Mark Taylor said the colt was in Book 3 of the Keeneland sale rather than placed with the better prospects of Book 1 because when he was inspect-ed by Taylor Made's representatives in early spring "he had a good walk but he was a little on the small side."

Consignor Kerry Cauthen of Four Star Sales said that consignment "had a great sale" Sept. 19, selling 26 of 29 offered on the day for receipts of $1,607,000.

"There are a lot of people who still need horses," Cauthen said. "We had a nice group of horses and there are buyers here for them if you keep your re-serves honest and let the market decide what they're worth.

"You have a lot of end-users buying to take them to the track, and that's what you want to see in a healthy market. It's not being buoyed by investment money."

A Curlin colt consigned as Hip 1843 brought the day's second-highest price of $485,000, going to agent Mike Ryan. Bred by Happy Hill Farm, the bay colt is out of the Lawyer Ron mare Sing Like a Bird, a half sister to multiple stakes winner Wiredfortwot-wenty. BH

SARAH SIS WIRES PRESQUE ISLE DOWNS MASTERSBy Myra Lewyn

Sarah Sis led the field all the way and held off a strong closing bid from two-time defending winner

Living The Life to narrowly prevail in the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters (gr. II) Sept. 19.

Living The Life, off the pace early, burst from the pack in the final sixteenth and steadily closed in on Sarah Sis, coming tantalizingly close to a third straight win, but she was denied by just a head.

Trained by Ingrid Mason for owner Joe Ragsdale, Sarah Sis added a fifth graded win to her record and second victory from eight starts this year after taking the Chicago Handicap (gr. III) July 27 at Arlington In-ternational Racecourse three starts back. The 4-year-old Sharp Humor filly entered off a ninth-place finish against top-flight company at Saratoga Race Course in the Ballerina Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27 but rebounded emphatically Monday evening when Florent Geroux fired her from the gate.

"She broke very sharply; the first quarter was slow but she pricked her ears," Geroux said of Sarah Sis, who at 10-1 odds went on to finish 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.42 on the all-weather track.

With Unbridled Courage pressing about a head back, Disco Barbie and Birdatthewire close up, and Living The Life midpack in sixth, Sarah Sis clocked the opening quarter in :23.89 and a quicker half mile in :46.66. Entering the lane, she had a narrow advan-tage over Birdatthewire while Living The Life split rivals four wide with Corey Lanerie and took aim on the front-runner.

Opening up by two lengths, Sarah Sis had to call upon all her reserves as Living the Life closed in but just missed.

Birdatthewire, the favorite, tired in upper stretch before finishing eighth, while Bar of Gold got up for third, a half length behind Living The Life.

Sarah Sis paid $22.20, $10, and $7, Living The Life returned $5.40 and $3.60, and Bar of Gold paid $6.20 to show.

Sarah Sis was bred in Kentucky by veterinarian Catherine Rene White from the winning Gilded Time mare Emerald Gal, whose dam is a half sister to graded winner and millionaire Isitingood. Ragsdale bought the filly from Doble Jack, agent, for $20,000 at the 2014 Ocala Breeders' Sale Co. June sale of 2-year-olds in training and she has since earned $911,000.

Offered though agent Lane's End at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale, she did not reach her reserve price on a final bid of $1.2 million.

Sarah Sis has an 8-4-0 record from 21 career starts that includes three other graded wins, all in 2015: the Lexus Raven Run (gr. II), Iowa Oaks (gr. III), and Honeybee Stakes (gr. III).

Elusive Collection was fourth in the Masters, fol-lowed by Cactus Kris, Regia Marina, Meshell, Birdat-thewire, Unbridled Courage, Cactus Copy, and Disco Barbie to complete the order of finish. BH

SONGBIRD, NYQUIST FAVORED AT PARXBy Blood-Horse Staff

The stage is set for the biggest day of the year at Parx Racing, as post positions were drawn Sept.

19 for the grade I Cotillion Stakes and the grade II Pennsylvania Derby, which top a five-stakes program Sept. 24.

Songbird was a near-unanimous choice as 1-2 favorite to remain unbeaten against five rivals—three of them grade I or grade II winners—in the $1 million guaranteed Cotillion.

The Pennsylvania Derby also looms as a pivotal showdown between Nyquist and Exaggerator, the first two finishers in both the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (both gr. I). Exaggerator has since gone on to win the Preakness Stakes and Haskell Invitational (both gr. I).

If they both start, the purse of the Pennsylvania Derby increases by $250,000 to $1.25 million.

Songbird continues to dominate her division with six more graded stakes wins this year, capped by smashing scores in the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes (both gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, making her a perfect 10 for 10 for Rick

Porter's Fox Hill Farm and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

The daughter of Madaglia d'Oro, who had her final workout at Santa Anita Park Sept. 18, arrived at Parx just before 6:00 p.m. Sept. 19. The first two finishers of the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), Cathryn Sophia and Land Over Sea; Acorn Stakes (gr. I) winner Carina Mia; and the local runners Disco Rose and Queena Esther are set to oppose.

The 50th running of the Cotillion will be race 10, with post time scheduled for 4:55 Eastern.

Nyquist won his first eight starts, taking the

measure of Exaggerator three times along the way, but the latter turned the tables on his nemesis in the Preakness and Haskell. After respectively putting in their final workouts over the weekend at San Luis Rey Downs training center and Churchill Downs, they were scheduled to ship to Parx Sept. 21.

Nyquist, the 5-2 favorite, and Exaggerator, the 9-2 second choice, have combined to win 12 grad-ed stakes and $8.75 million. But that hasn't scared anyone away from the Pennsylvania Derby, which attracted a full field of 12—the largest field since a dozen also ran in 2008—including three-time grade II winner Cupid; multiple graded stakes winner Gun Runner; and Awesome Slew, a dominating winner of the Smarty Jones (gr. III) in his first local appearance.

The 40th Pennsylvania Derby goes off as race 11, with post time set for 5:45.

The owner and trainer of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, Haskell, and Travers Stakes (all gr. I) winners are eligible for a $50,000 ap-pearance bonus. Therefore, connections of Nyquist would receive a total of $100,000, while Exaggerator's

connections would receive $200,000 if they start.Live television coverage of the Cotillion and Penn-

sylvania Derby will be carried on Comcast Sportsnet, along with the 29th running of the $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-old sprinters.

Rounding out Saturday's stakes action are the $150,000 Pennsylvania Derby Champion Stakes, honor-ing last year's Pennsyvania Derby winner Frosted. BH

LADY AURELIA READY TO RUN 'BEST EVER RACE'By Blood-Horse Staff

Trainer Wesley Ward believes his unbeaten juvenile filly Lady Aurelia just might run of the best race of her

young career in the Connolly's Red Mills Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-I) Sept. 24 at Newmarket.

The Kentucky-bred daughter of Scat Daddy, owned by her breeder Stonestreet Stables along with George Bolton, and Peter Leidel, is domiciled at The National Stud in Newmarket for her European campaign, and United States-based Ward has been getting daily pro-gress reports from jockey Frankie Dettori, who rode her to victory at Royal Ascot and at Deauville in France.

Perfect in all three of her starts, Lady Aurelia scored a blowout seven-length triumph in the Queen Mary Stakes (Eng-II) in June at the Royal meet after her impressive 7 1/2-length unveiling April 21 at Keeneland, and again with Dettori, kept her unbeaten record intact in the Prix Morny (Fr-I) Aug. 21 at Deauville.

The bay filly posted a Sept. 17 workout at Newmarket, bolstering Ward's confidence ahead Saturday's race.

"Lady Aurelia worked great on the Rowley Mile (Saturday) and is ready to run her best ever race," said Ward. "I have a lot to thank my 'assistant trainer' Frankie Dettori for! He's the only person to have ridden her since she came over from France after the Prix Morny, and I'm really excited to have such interaction race-to-race from the world's greatest jockey.

"When I wake up every morning there's a video bulletin from Frankie waiting for me, telling me how things are going—it's as if I was there. And he's been telling me that we are really going to see something from her this time.

"Lady Aurelia was at a disadvantage at Ascot and in the Morny as she was taking on the home team. Now, mainly thanks to Brian O'Rourke who has graciously allowed her to lodge at The National Stud, I feel that we are more of the home team than they are.

"I gave her a month off after Ascot; before the Morny she just had four easy breezes, so in hindsight maybe she was not as cranked up for that as she might have been. And, when you study the Deauville video, you can see that she steps in a hole at the furlong marker—there's a cloud of dust around all four of her feet."

Lady Aurelia could face up to nine rivals in the Chev-eley Park Stakes, including Jaber Abdullah's Frankel filly Queen Kindly, winner of last month's Lowther Stakes (Eng-II) at York for trainer Richard Fahey, as well as Aidan O'Brien-trained Brave Anna and Roly Poly, both Ken-tucky-bred daughters of Claiborne Farm sire War Front, North America's current leading sire of 2-year-olds (Scat Daddy is second on the list).

Evie Stockwell's Brave Anna won the Albany Stakes (Eng-III) at Royal Ascot but has been disappointing since, while Coolmore and partners' Roly Poly won the Duch-ess of Cambridge Stakes July 8 at Newmarket before her close second to Queen Kindly in the Aug. 18 Lowther. BH

SALES UPDATE

CONSIGNOR POINT OF VIEW: BACCARIBy Ron Mitchell and Erin Shea

When Baccari Bloodstock showed a Tapit colt to potential buyers before the Keeneland

September yearling sale, representatives from two prominent farms inspected the horse only to never return.

There were enough buyers that at least two bidders pushed the yearling to top the Sept. 13 session at $1.2 million, pleasing consignor Chris Baccari and partner SF Bloodstock, which bred the colt.

The colt is out Hooh Why, who won the 2009 Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland and 2010 Sea-way (Can-III) at Woodbine among seven stakes wins. The daughter of Cloud Hopping, was a $750,000 RNA at the 2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale while carrying the Tapit colt in utero.

"He just had a beautiful body. He had a big walk, and I fell in love with him," buyer J. J. Crupi said of the colt. "We weren't leaving here without him. It's going to the racetrack, it's not going to the sale, it's going to become a racehorse. He'll be broken at Crupi's New Castle Farm and then move on probably to Todd Pletcher."

Chris Baccari said the criteria some potential buyers use in their pre-sale inspections, espe-cially the emphasis on the obligatory walk, is too discerning.

"That's disheartening," said Baccari, who sold 10 yearlings for $3,550,000 through the Sept. 18 sale session. "They are on special-type hors-es and they make such a big deal about certain things, especially a walk or something like that. I try to tell them they don’t have races for walking. And dirt horses do not walk like grass horses."

Baccari said colleagues in the business as-sured him the colt in his consignment was the best of the Tapits being offered at Keeneland; the consignor did not have an opportunity to look at other yearlings by North America's leading sire.

"They just felt that he had a little bit more

natural longness to him, a little more bone, just a little more rugged look to him and his mother (Hooh Why) was a great racehorse," Baccari said.

The veteran horseman said Hooh Why was a hard-knocking mare with a race record he and other breeders find desirable in broodmares. In six seasons, Hooh Why raced 54 times, with 12 wins, 14 second-place finishes, and nine thirds, earning more than $1.2 million.

"She had a lot of soundness to her and I think that's appealing to anybody," he said of the mare. "Nobody likes to be able to run four times and be done."

Baccari honed his eye for a horse by buying yearlings to race and came to the equine sales market almost by accident.

"I used to only buy yearlings originally to race," he said. "I used to buy 12 yearlings a year, and one year I had 25, and I about flipped my canoe over. So I had to start selling some of them again. But my passion is really racing, this is my job, but if somebody bought me out tomorrow and said 'Go do racehorses again,' I would quit this and I would just race." BH

GHOSTZAPPER GETS 50TH BLACK-TYPE WINNERBy Eric Mitchell

Adena Springs homebred Ghostzapper got his 50th black-type stakes winner Sept. 18 at

Presque Isle Downs where his 6-year-old gelded son Ghost Hunter won the Presque Isle Mile Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths as the favorite.

Though his first stakes victory, the Presque Isle Mile was Ghost Hunter's fifth consecutive win since June 28. His winning streak includes a record-set-ting victory in a $47,000 allowance/optional claimer July 10 at Laurel Park where he lowered the course record for 1 1/6 miles on the turf to 1:39.

Bred by Adena Springs, the gelding is the first foal and first winner out of the Kafwain daughter and stakes winner Hartfelt, who Adena Springs bought at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $75,000. Hartfelt is a half sister to graded stakes winner Silver Streaker (Smart Strike).

Ghost Hunter is trained by Jamie Ness, who co-owns the gelding in the name of Jagger Inc. with Tri-

in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes (gr. I), where she will contest Cathryn Sophia for the first time. Carina Mia, well behind Songbird in the Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I), is also entered. BH

RACING

THE LIMITS OF TECHNOLOGY

I used to think that maybe I was born too late. That somehow things would have been

better had I known the original Pennsylvania Station, seen Whirlaway's long tail follow him down the stretch, or witnessed a young Willie Mays chasing fly balls across a field where polo ponies once galloped.

But now that I'm older, I no longer think that maybe I was born too late. Now I am certain of it.

It's not early-onset curmudgeonliness. If kids still played ball in the street they would be wel-come on my lawn whenever they wanted. And this is not some nativist or self-centered longing for a time when guys like Archie Bunker had it made. It's still a wonderful world. Sometimes it just seems that it's being wasted on the wrong people.

I live and work in Manhattan. It was once the greatest city in the world. But observe enough of its crane-necked inhabitants and you'll start to believe that, whatever Gotham still has going for it, it just can't compete with what's on that tiny screen.

I don't blame technology, but I do blame the way we let it become a proxy for the world we once inhabited. It used to be that when a man was tired of London, it meant he was tired of life. Now it may just mean he is tired of London's simulacrum.

But every so often, someone uses technology in a way that cuts through the clutter to get at what truly matters. Cherie DeVaux—an assistant trainer to Chad Brown—recently posted a photo on Twitter that showed her sitting down on some straw just outside a stall while being

gently nuzzled by a Thoroughbred. Her caption? "My job is better than yours."

It was a blanket assertion that was quickly deemed to be unassailable. This made it easy to exit my workplace precisely at five so I might catch the last few races of the Kentucky Downs meet.

Years ago, I could have walked a few short blocks to watch the races at the fashion district OTB or upstairs in the old "Winner’s Circle" restaurant, but New York City has been without such establishments since 2010.

I could have stopped at a bar and played the races from my phone, but that seemed antiso-cial. Instead, I simply walked home and watched them on my laptop. This has none of the won-der and spectacle of the racetrack, but there is the convenience.

I once pitied the pensioners who were at the racetrack every day, in my belief that they had nothing better to do. Now I realize that I was right about the "nothing better" part, but that I shouldn't have pitied them. Ah, the folly of youth! To have believed there was something better than going to the races. BH
