Telecom Outsite Plant Lifetime

The Cabling Infrastructure is the mostly determining the CAPEX of a Telecom network

In order to achieve a reasonable ROI a long lifetime of the Cable plant is mandatory

Copper pair networks constructed to transmit 4 kHz of voice signals about 20 … 30 years ago today transport up to 100 Mbit/s (VDSL2) thanks to the consequent star topology (point-to-point network)

CATV networks have been installed in many cases > 20 years ago to carry around 20 TV + 30 FM channels and carry today FM, hundreds of TV channels and Internet services.

FTTH networks therefore should also be designed to last long, e.g. > 20 years

Prognosis on high speed access

networks

Main capital investment flows into last mile

Wireless technologies not available for long distance / high speed

DSL based technologies and also HFC will reach a throughput limit

Expensive to refurbish last mile when the wrong choices were taken

FttH or FttP are architectures of choice:

Long term investment protection

Largest bandwidth delivered

Operational savings for large deployments

Easy to upgrade for future bandwidth demands

Prediction –

How much Access Bandwidth is required ?

today

average for all Broadband Users with different kind of Data and Voice services as well as

available VOD services. Valid independent on Access Technology.

What kind

Service Evolution

Telephony Services will be transmitted in the future via VoIP

Data services will continue to request higher datarate (Youtube ...)

Video services will continue to eat up the available datarate if IPTV is used without an additional RF video overlay:

Full HDTV: 1920 x 1080 ~ 9…20 Mbit/s (MPEG4)

Several streams of video (multiple displays + DVR) require many videostreams to be supported

Special functions (e.g. DVR fast forward) require a multiple (3 ~ 5) of the standard datarate

What´s next?

Quality factors of the pure IP PON

seen from the Network Operator

Data, telephony, radio + TV services:

Pros: Fiber network with just one fiber per PON (16 … 64 subscribers)

leaving the CO; saves space and equipment in the CO

Cons: Outdoor-location for passive optical splitter reduced granularity

Shared medium requires encryption and protection measures

Anacom Workshop FTTH 17

Radio + TV services:

Pros: Triply-play via pure IP-Network

Cons: IPTV headend or feeder required

IP backbone needs to be able to provide sufficient data rate capacity

Page 18: FTTH Network Tendencies - ANACOM

Quality factors of the pure IP PON

seen from subscriber

Data and telephony services:

Pros: Good speech quality

High speed data service available

Cons: Individual requests on the different performance of the service hardly be fulfilled

since PON is a shared medium

Anacom Workshop FTTH 18

Radio + TV services:

Pros: pure IP inhouse network, no coaxial cable network required

Cons: reduced comfort compared to direct satellite or CATV service

IPTV set-top box required for each subscriber radio/TV/VCR

limited zapping performance

IP-Radio instead of SAT-Radio or FM-Radio

TV service with a significant delay (e.g. 5 … 10 Seconds)

Page 27: FTTH Network Tendencies - ANACOM

Quality factors of the Point to Point + RF video

overlay seen from the Network Operator

Data and telephony services:

Pros: Each subscriber receives his own fiber

Very different data rates ( 100 Mb/s … 10 Gb/s) feasible

Large optical budget compared to PON

Good protection against vandalism and signal tapping

No outdoor location required

Cons: Increased amount of fibers in OLT ( n fibers for subsribers)

and consequently more equipment

Anacom Workshop FTTH 27

Radio + TV services:

Pros: low cost RF Video Overlay System instead of state of the art IPTV System

No nonlinear optical crosstalk between IP => RF video as occurring in PON

Better TV picture quality for analog TV compared to PON + RF Video Overlay

System

Network Upgrade in Basel/CH

Upgrade for residential area to future safe FTTH network

The challenge:

Upgrade from old cable infrastructure to a future proof network (limited installation space )

CATV + DVB-C and additional several hundred SAT-IF channels with DVB-S

Analogue TV set shall still work without any STB

How to safe the invest of the network and to be able to expand to very high data services like 100bT or GB-Ethernet ?

Page 31: FTTH Network Tendencies - ANACOM

Anacom Workshop FTTH 31

Network Upgrade in Basel/CH

Upgrade for residential area to future safe FTTH network

The Solution:

Build an FTTH network with 2/4 single mode fibers P-P to each home using same duct as before coaxial branch installation

One fiber is served with the a high performance optical 1550nm TX for CATV + SAT-IF (5 .. 2.400 MHz) boosted with an EDFA

The 2nd fiber will be used for Ethernet based data traffic.
