    Thank You!

Orbx would like to thank youfor purchasing FTX AU YPJT JANDAKOT AIRPORT. This is the first paywareairport Orbx was proud to co-develop with and publish on behalf of developer Jarrad Marshall, who has beenworking on this project for well over two years.

This scenery includes not only the airport perimeter itself, but the entire circuit area and most of the key VFRnavigation waypoints contained in over 50 square kilometres of photoreal terrain using 80cm aerialphotography licensed from the Western Australian government.

    Installation

Installation of FTX AU YPJT should only take a few minutes and theres nothing for you to tweak or fiddlewith. When you run the flightsimstore.come-commerce unwrapper which you downloaded or received onCD, just provide your order number, date, registration key and the FTX installer automatically runs. Once theinstaller has completed, you can simply start FSX and load a flight at airport code YPJT from the Go-To-Airport menu.

Detailed FSX Settings for YPJT Jandakot

If you want to delve deeper and tune the simulator for the best performance both for visuals and frame ratesat the airport, we suggest a few settings as per the guide below.

Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with todays modern hardware, will for mostpeople result in very poor visuals and performance. FTX will generally perform the same if not better than thedefault FSX.

We recommend the following settings based on our testing.

    Terrain and water

For AU YPJT there are some important things to consider.

Level of Detail Radiuscan be medium or maxed out. Medium will provide for much faster loading timesand if used with a lower weather visibility level is completely unnoticeable. However, if you want to see thephotoreal area in the distance as crisp as possible, then move this slider all the way to the right.

Mesh Complexity This can be maxed out

Texture resolution Orbx YPJT uses 15cm per pixel photoreal textures, so set this to 15cm for crisprunway and road textures and the best quality ground textures

Water effects These dont improve past High 2.x, so leave that there if your PC has a graphics card whichsupports Shader 2.x or above. Some users report that Mid 2.x has no real negative effect on visuals but givesbetter frames.

    9/19

Orbx FTX AU YPJT Jandakot Version 1.0 User Guide January 2009 Page 9

Important note on Water Effects - We recommend setting to Mid or High 2.x

1.x This will cause square blocks at the lakes and inland water bodies in AU YPJT

2.x This is our minimum recommended setting for the tech we have implemented in AU YPJT

2.Max Not recommend. No visual gain, and causes lights on during the day bug.

    Scenery Objects

This is a key area, and you need to be careful to tune this in accordance with your PCs hardware.

Scenery complexity - This can be set to Dense, or set to Extremely Dense. These do not have a highimpact on frame rates

Autogen Density See below for recommendations. Autogen density is the single biggest frame killer inFSX, mainly due to the tenfold increase in object density from FS2004. For example, we now can have 6,000trees per square kilometre compared to only 600 in FS2004. YPJT has had over 100,000 individual trees

planted by Autogen annotation, so trees are the biggest killer here.

We find that using the TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN fsx.cfg tweak (see page 13) allows you to bring theautogen more in line with FS2004 levels, and should be used in conjunction with the Density slider as well.

Your Autogen Density slider is one of the most important settings in the simulator. We recommend:

Townships Normalto Dense (Dense if you have a faster PC, Very Dense if its an uber one)

Rural areas Denseto Very Dense. (Extremely Dense if you have a faster PC)

Wilderness or heavily forested areas Denseto Very Dense

The importance of the Autogen Density slider cannot be emphasised enough. The difference around theairport area for example, between Normal and Extremely Dense autogen can be a halving of your frame

rates. We recommend that you begin with Normal and try increasing it one level until performance drops tothe point of stuttering. Then drop it back a notch and youve found you PCs sweet spot.

The Autogen annotation for this Warnevale scenery has been optimised so that even at Normal setting youwill have a good coverage of trees.

    Ground Scenery Shadows

Turn these off. They kill frame rates and also have unpredictable visual results. The FTX ground texturesinclude shadows underneath trees and beside a lot of buildings already. You will also get ugly squareshadows underneath the FTX trees with this turned on.

    Road Vehicle Traffic

Set road vehiclesat about 19%for Jandakot. We have bi-directional traffic on all roads and the road networkaround the airport and townships have been extended, so you can effectively halve the density youve beenused to. A high road vehicle traffic setting not only creates a very unrealistic road appearance but also has ahuge impact on frame rates. FSX automatically increases traffic densities on freeways depending onpopulation density and dawn/dusk, and we found for YPJT that 19% is the best setting for realism and alsogood frame rates.

    Screen Resolution

Go for the highest 32-bit screen resolution your monitor allows and set filtering to Anisotropic.

    Anti-Aliasing

Strangely on our nVidia equipped Orbx Dell laptops, we turn Anti-Aliasing OFF, because the nHancer controlpanel can override the FSX AA settings which are AAX8, and instead we use and recommend AAX4S.

However, on our Quad Core QX6800 desktopbenchmark PC, we find that we need to check the AA box toactivate it. Try both settings to see what works best for you.

    Global texture resolution

This should be cranked to max (or very high we found no visual difference in quality when set to high, butgot slightly smoother flights),

    Light Bloom

Ah good old light bloom! Use it only if you have the grunt, but our opinion is that the visual difference is toomarginal to justify the frame rate hit.

    Lens Flare

My real-world sunglasses dont produce lens flare. But my camera sometimes does. Personal taste

    Advanced animations

    Always leave this on.

    Weather

Lastly, the weather settings. Use your personal preferences, but the above screenshot shows ourrecommended settings if using the default FSX clouds textures. As always, with weather, try using customweather setting that minimize Cumulus clouds, as the default Cumulus are real frame rate hogs.

    Tweaking fsx.cfg (Advanced Users Only)

Generally, when Microsoft released FSX SP2 (or Acceleration Pack, which contains the same SP2 fixes),there was less need to spend time tweaking and fiddling, and more time to just enjoy flying. The major changein SP2 was a more efficient autogen batching system and better support for dual or quad core CPUs.

The three tweaks below are the most we would recommend to tweak for fsx.cfg; digging too deep and playingtoo much with obscure settings can in the end adversely affect performance rather than enhance it.

    Where is your fsx.cfg located?

From Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, type in this string:

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\

This will locate and open the folder when the fsx.cfg is located. TIP:Right-drag the file to a handy locationand save a shortcut for it. If not already assigned, make Notepad the default application to open it. That way, just double-click on the shortcut to edit your fsx.cfg

Once you have fsx.cfg open in Notepad, find the [section headers] shown in blue and add the entries belowthem.

    [TERRAIN]TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2000TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1700

Notes for above:This is the setting most of the Orbx development and testing team use. Some of us evenlower buildings to 1000, but I recommend 1700 as the "sweet spot". I even use this for my screenshots andvideos. It may seem that limiting trees and buildings will affect the visual quality, but if you consider that FS9only had a maximum of 600 trees and 300 houses per cell, it's a massive increase and in 99.99% of caseswill still give you very full forests and cities. You will still get great tree coverage with the value set as low as1500 - it's really a matter of trying some values to see how it looks for you visually.

    [SCENERY]SmallPartRejectRadius=2

Notes for above:This little tweak tells FSX to not draw any objects in the distance which are smaller than 2pixels wide. This can save on FPS also, particularly on approaches to airports in urban/city areas.

    [Main]DisablePreload=1

Notes for above: This will simply avoid pre-loading the default flight and makes for quicker FSX startuptimes.

    General Tips For Flights

When in Virtual Cockpit, cockpit or external views, pull the zoom back using the "-" (minus) key all theway to 30% This view may not be to everyone's taste, but it has the effect of making all the groundtextures much, much crisper. With todays widescreen monitors it also provides a realistic field ofview.

This may not apply to everyone, and may contradict earlier advice in this user guide, but sometimessetting frame rate to unlimited can provide for smoother flights, but at the slight expense of someblurring and the occasional stutter. This is the opposite experience to FS9, where locked framesalways performed best. This also works best since FSX-Acceleration/SP2. Try this for yourself to seeif it helps add some smoothness.

SHIFT+ O(not zero, but the letter O) allows you to look around using your mouse in most views, andsimulates head movement. Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on areas of interest. The "-"(minus) key held down is a simple way to zoom back out more quickly.

Try to keep your Windows desktop resolution the same as that used by FSX. Believe it or not, runningFSX at the highest resolution your monitor and video card combination can support, will yield bettervisuals and smoother frame rates than bringing your screen resolution down to an artificially lowervalue.

When exploring FTX for the first time, dont be in a rush and whiz across the landscape in your fastestaircraft at 500 knots. Grab the microlight motorized glider and press the S until the view changes todirectly behind it. Press and hold - to zoom right out, then use SHIFT+O to freely look around.Crank up the throttle with F4 and swing your mouse from side to side as if to move your head. Youllbe amazed how much fun it is using that combination. Give it a try!

Pressing "Q" (Sound off) will give you some FPS back, but of course at the expense of total silence!Perhaps a nice mode to fly with when youre listening to your MP3 player.

Disable your Anti-Virus program while running FSX. At Orbx we use NOD32 AV, which allows us to"exclude" the FSX folder from virus checks which avoids each file being processed by the AV engineduring loading and flights. If you are worried about security, just pull out your internet connectioncable (unless of course you are relying on it for real-time weather etc).

Nvidia Users: Orbx highly recommends the nHancer utility for tweaking your nVidia card settings. Youcan grab that utility from www.nhancer.com each setting on the applications interface has a sectiondevoted to explaining what the tweak does. Very handy indeed.

Give the above tweaks a try and you will find FTX a smoother more enjoyable experience, and in somecases, you will be able to drag the autogen density sliders further to the right.
