2 FUJITSU LABORATORIES LTD.

Covid-19 has fundamentally changed both society and the economy, establishing what we have come to accept as the new normal. It has triggered huge waves of change that will continue to impact on society and business, requiring us all to find new ways to adapt.

Fujitsu has announced its commitment to transform from a traditional IT company into a DX (digital transformation)

company, applying innovative digital technology to revolutionize our customers’ businesses. As a DX company, Fujitsu’s raison d’être is very clear with a defined purpose: “to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation”. As the core organization responsible for the Fujitsu Group’s R&D strategy, Fujitsu Laboratories plays a central role in creating the cutting-edge technologies needed to achieve this objective.

“Trust” is the key element involved in realizing our purpose. It is the single most important and valuable principle that we offer to our customers. In a world where everything is connected through digital technology, “trust” underpins every service and product that we create, going far beyond the concept of reliability alone.

The elements of trust are intricately interrelated and widely distributed in both the physical world and cyberspace. Fujitsu Laboratories believes that cyberspace is where we will increasingly work to ensure trust, and that digital technologies will become the agents of trust in every respect. In line with the paradigm shift taking place in the world, Fujitsu Laboratories has recently established its mid-term R&D vision as “Digital Trust”. We are working to facilitate the shift smoothly through advanced technologies that will enable us to ensure the crucial concept of trust in society. We have already achieved some remarkable results enroute to attaining this vision, including creating Wide Learning as trustworthy and explainable AI, and multi-biometrics contactless authentication that is both hygienic and privacy-friendly. We will continue to expand our R&D activities still further.

Fujitsu Laboratories is engaged in R&D on a global basis, and our multinational research team is drawn from four centers around

the world. Our experts work closely with world-class universities and research organizations, such as the University of Toronto in Canada, which is internationally recognized in the field of quantum computing and AI. In France, we work in collaboration with INRIA,

a global research organization in the field of mathematical science, as well as with the OSS community, such as Hyperledger (a blockchain technology promotion community), to develop leading technologies. Exchanges between world-class researchers encourage the emergence of new ideas that will eventually become cutting-edge technologies. Our research approach at Fujitsu Laboratories is inspired by this process of collaboration and co-creation.

As we all come to terms with what the new normal actually entails, Fujitsu Laboratories will remain firmly focused on finding new ways to contribute to the world’s sustainable development - supporting the realization of Fujitsu’s objectives and fundamental purpose with trailblazing, cutting-edge technology.

Continuously developing the world’s top-class cutting-edge technologies for leading digital transformation by predicting the technology trend

We open up a new horizon for computing technology by presenting a groundbreaking paradigm and architecture for solving problems which are impossible to solve or given up solving with existing methods. In order to utilize explosively increasing amounts of data which are generated by various systems from cloud to edge systems in the 5G era, extremely high computing power is required. We can provide the best solutions to meet customer needs, by making the best use of Fujitsu’s technological strengths such as parallel processing, which was enhanced through supercomputer development, domain-specific accelerators, high-performance computing algorithm and network technologies. We are also engaged in developing completely new methods such as quantum computing.

Pursuing New-Generation Computing for Overcoming Performance Limitations

In the digital transformation era where all kinds of data is connected, in addition to preparing the measures against cyberattacks, we have to ensure privacy protection and trustworthiness of the data used for AI learning. Therefore, security is now a business challenge or serious operational issue for every company and organization. We will ensure trust in people, things and systems by focusing on a “security by design” development method for embedding appropriate security functions from designing phase of a system and developing technologies concerning cyber security, data security, identity authentication of people and organizations, and Blockchain.

Promoting Security by Design Focusing on Data Risk Prevention

Through AI democratization, AI has been rapidly penetrating into society both in business and our daily lives. We are aiming to realize AI that is really trustworthy in every aspect. We intend to establish the world-leading AI technologies to support autonomous machine learning for actualizing autonomous growth of AI, decision support using digital knowledge (a new type of knowledge), explainable AI for facilitating cooperation between people and AI, new quality management of AI that is highly data-dependent, and trusted AI that can solve compliance-related and ethical problems. Through these initiatives, we promote social implementation of AI in various fields.

Realizing AI that Can Be Trusted by Society

In order to use the increasingly distributed and complex digital systems stably in the future, we have to establish technologies for automatic development and autonomous operation of such systems. For operating systems responding to user situations and their changes, we need to develop functions to measure and analyze the user needs and system conditions precisely. Adding new quality evaluation indicators suitable for digital systems such as quality in use, besides conventional ones, we implement quality control functions tailored to each purpose of system users, and efficiently provide digital systems with optimal quality. We aim to realize a society where ICT systems support people and work with them, by developing digital systems that evolve optimally according to customer needs.

Accelerating digital transformation and business growth by quickly providing cutting-edge technologies developed by Fujitsu Laboratories to customers

Digital Annealer is a unique computing architecture, which we have developed by being inspired by quantum behavior. It can high-speedily solve a large-scale, complex combinatorial optimization problems that were impossible for conventional computers, and opens the way for solving social challenges. We are now expanding its applicable scope globally and increasing its processing speed and capacity further to handle much larger-scale problems, for leading innovation in various fields such as advanced materials, drug discovery, logistics, and finance.

Along with the spread of digital technology, a wide variety of data, such as IoT, media, and business data, is being created from moment to moment through the connection of people, things, and processes, and the util ization of such data in the business field is rapidly expanding. In order to maximize the bus iness va lue through data ut i l i zat ion, we c reate innovative data processing platforms by combining various new technologies for ensuring safe and secure data exchange and high-speed processing of massive data, and provide new solutions for generating value from data.

Based on cutting-edge digital technologies, we integrate various kinds of technologies and know-how systematically and provide core solutions which can be introduced to a variety of industries and business fields. We will promote co-creation with customers for new value creation by leveraging the following cutting-edge digital technologies: (1) Diagnosis and prediction technologies for monitoring the condition, detecting anomalies and estimating the deterioration level of diverse targets ranging from machines to plants, (2) Behavior analysis technologies for monitoring human operation and actions, (3) Data utilization technologies for matching, analyzing and recommending data securely and efficiently, and (4) Biometric authentication and settlement technologies based on palm vein and face data, such as for cashless payment.

In order to achieve digital transformation successfully, we have to execute a step-by-step migration while minimizing the impact on existing systems and keeping their stable operation. For this sake, we provide technologies to (1) analyze and migrate existing systems smoothly, (2) enhance reliability of microservices, (3) automate system operation for supporting system management in multi-cloud environment, and other required technologies, and aim to implement highly reliable systems quickly.
