Fulbright Commission in Ecuador Though change is natural and happens constantly, we, as humans, tend to oppose it. Of course, there are things that are better left unchanged, such as respecting a red traffic light, but in general, change is inevitable, and if it is for the better, even better! With this in mind, there have been a few changes these last couple of cycles experienced by Fulbright. The first one, would be the building itself. The outside wall and the house inside got a facelift and some damages were repaired. We would have liked to be in charge of the repairs so that we could schedule them during the break and thereby surprising our students when they got back to class, but being a patrimonial house, we cannot do anything, including repairs, to it. Instead, the municipality was in charge of it and it was up to them to decide when the job would be carried out, depending on their availability. Another change that we experienced was also that of the Fulbright logo. We had originally been informed of the change last year, but until all the details were worked out, it was only in this cycle that we started implementing it in all our stationery. Last but not least, there is also the change to this, your Fulbright Idea. It is now what it was originally intended to be-the students’ opportunity to show off their progress and what they have learned in their individual levels. With this in mind, instructors were asked to recommend sample writing assignments for publication and that is what this issue and all future issues of the Fulbright Idea will be all about. We feel this is a way to motivate students to do their best at improving their English and those efforts, which deserve recognition, will be published in the Fulbright Idea. Though change is natural and happens constantly, we, as humans, tend to oppose it. Of course, there are things that are better left unchanged, such as respecting a red traffic light, but in general, change is inevitable, and if it is for the better, even better!

With this in mind, there have

been a few changes these last couple of cycles experienced by Fulbright.

Another change that we

experienced was also that of the Fulbright logo. We had originally been informed of the change last year, but until all the details were worked out, it

was only in this cycle that we started implementing it in all our stationery.

Last but not least, there is also

the change to this, your Fulbright Idea.

With all this in mind, we are sure

you will enjoy this first issue of the Fulbright Idea under the original format it was meant to be – the students’ opportunity to show what they have achieved throughout the cycle. THE VALUE OF LIFE

By: Ana Maria Erazo, Level VI Instructor: Camille Henderson

Life is defined as “The period between birth and death, or the experience or state of being alive” (dictionary.cambridge.org). Since death is part of the natural course of life, science must consider respecting this human condition by letting it fulfill its objective. Immortality is not about living hundreds of years but being an example for others. Every single person is born with a destiny to fulfill, so human beings do not need to extend their lives to find out what their life purposes are. Hence, scientists should not try to help people beat old age in order to live longer lives because it will turn out to be a great threat to mankind. Initially, living longer lives by taking advantage of the benefits of science brings about serious effects on the countries´ development. The economy in societies will be negatively affected. To be specific, the more years a person lives, the less resources a society will have to provide citizens with a good quality of life. Therefore, poverty and starvation will drastically increase. Likewise, the health field will also suffer critical changes. To exemplify, the side effects of life prolonging treatments will augment the number of patients not only in private hospitals but also public ones.

Consequently, patients will have to wait for hours in the emergency rooms to be treated, and the quality of service will get worse and worse. Besides, the social sphere will be seriously harmed due to the increase of the elderly. For instance, if a lot of human beings live more than ninety years, the number of retired people will rise. Hence, the government will be obligated to spend a lot of money on retirement pensions, and the opportunity to obtain housing loans or credits given by the social security will be more difficult or even impossible. In brief, trying to artificially prolong human beings’ lives will stop societies from getting ahead.

Furthermore, unnaturally prolonging people’s lives causes significant changes in their personality. A person whose life has been prolonged will not feel the same emotions than a common human being. Specifically, if there is a cycling competition between long-lived men and regular sportsmen, effort and motivation to win the challenge will be more valuable for competitors who know that living every day as the last one gives meaning to their lives. Therefore, people who live more than necessary will not be committed to doing their best because for them there will always be a new opportunity to try it again. Additionally, lengthening

individuals’ lives changes their way of thinking. For example, a person who extends his or her life will be eager to make more and more money because his or her life will be long enough to take advantage of that wealth. Thus, selfishness and ambition will increase in the world. Moreover, getting older more slowly will have impact on patients’ behavior. To illustrate, since the effect of life prolonging treatments will keep human beings younger, the abuse of alcohol and drugs will not be a threat to health. In consequence, the lives of many people will be full of excesses and a lack of awareness. All things considered, living longer lives will affect human beings’ ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

Now, many people think that not getting older and remaining young despite the passing of time will enrich people’s self-esteem. For example, if a fifty-year-old woman looks younger not only her professional growth but also her social life will be benefitted, so the conviction to achieve great things will allow her to keep up with changes in a demanding world. However, appearing to be younger generates confusion in people by forcing them to have an immature behavior which lead them to make wrong decisions. To be specific, if a sixty-one-year-old married man looks younger, the instinct to feed his ego will make him prefer meeting young people and getting together with friends to being dedicated to his family and obligations. Hence, human beings’ maturity and wisdom will not be related to their age, and adults will no longer be an example for children. On the other hand, living more years gives individuals the opportunity to fulfill all their goals. To exemplify, if a forty-year-old woman wants to Continued on page 3

Value of Life…continued from page 2 become a professional model, beating old age will help her achieve her dreams, and regrets will not affect her life. However, increasing the number of years of life will strengthen the desire to be immortal. For example, if a thirty-year-old woman prolongs her life, looking good and younger will become a dangerous obsession. In consequence, establishing personal goals, gaining experience, and learning from failure will not enrich her life. To sum up, letting science change the natural course of life will make individualism and mediocrity stronger among societies. To summarize, life is commonly seen as a miracle full of experiences and adventures helping human beings face difficulties and evolve. Allowing science to retard aging keeps humanity away from reality by not valuing the simple and meaningful things of life. In addition, believing in oneself and having faith in one´s capacities will never be associated with a good appearance or longer life. And so, fighting against time and the natural cycle of life will prevent societies from progressing and reaching the common good, generate behavior changes which lead people not to value the present, and affect human beings´ fighting spirit by giving value to superficial beauty.

WHAT WOULD YOU IMPROVE AT FULBRIGHT?

By: Paulina Arteaga, Level I Instructor: Tomas Medina

Even though the Fulbright program is the best in the city, there are several additional facets I would recommend to enhance it even further. First, by increasing schedule choices during the entire day, a lot of students could get more involved with English learning skill. Similarly, a weekend-schedule alternative could be a well-designed option for people who don’t have enough time for tutoring from Monday to Friday. As it is explained above, both options would become an opportunity to grow the pupils’ population. At the same time, it would increase the economic income for the institution. Second, creating an English library with free-access resources such as books, podcasts, movies, and simulated tests could become a unique place never created before in Quito. Moreover, by having the possibility of borrowing some resources from there learners could keep practicing and enjoying the language material everywhere. Finally, offering some awards to the most hard-working students like tuition scholarships or short-time-exchange programs could make people feel self-motivated and treasured. Fulbright Commission makes the difference by being the best English school so far, but it could improve and be more

attractive with some extra features which might transform a language knowledge in a real-life experience. Instructor’s comments What I appreciate about this paragraph is how thoughtful the response is, and how the additions and suggestions are for the good of the Fulbright program, not just for the benefit of the students. It is very creative. It has been reproduced here as it was written (no corrections).

Congratulations to all Level VI students for finishing your studies at the ETP and good luck in all your future endeavors!

-*- P.S. Don’t forget to practice your

English!

LONGER LIVES DO NOT MEAN HAPPIER LIVES

By:Alex Garcés, Level VI Instructor: Camille Henderson

Life expectancy can be defined as “the length of time that a living thing, especially a human being, is expected to live” (Cambridge Dictionary, 2005). As time goes by and technology advances, people have increased their life spans by a great margin. For the past centuries, scientists have been making progress in increasing people’s life spans. Humans are now able to live around 80 years, whereas 100 years ago the life expectancy of an individual was about 40 years (Ruggeri, 2018). However, a limit must be set on how long people should live, for having longer life spans can mean a future riddled with problems. Therefore, scientists should not try to help people beat old age because living longer lives can bring about problems to the environment and affect people’s life quality.

People living longer can be harmful for the planet. To start, if people have longer life spans, Earth can become overpopulated. For example, living longer means that there will be more people in the world needing housing, which can lead to an increase in deforestation that will affect the planet if people live longer lives. Moreover, people living longer means that more waste will be produced. To be specific, since cities will be more crowded, more trash will

be produced, contaminating the environment and causing diseases. Furthermore, more natural resources will be needed to satisfy human necessities. To illustrate, if people live longer, there will be an increase in the consumption of natural resources, such as food, fossil fuels and minerals, that do not regenerate very easily. Therefore, the planet will no longer be able to sustain human life, for Earth will not be capable of providing enough resources for all the people living on it. All in all, Earth can be affected if humans have longer lives.

People’s life quality will not necessarily improve if their life spans are increased. To commence, people will need to work for more years in order to have better retirement pensions. For instance, if people live longer lives, it will mean that they will have to receive a pension for a longer time after they have retired; therefore, governments will need more money to give them a decent retirement pension, which can only be achieved if they work for more years. In addition, people will need more money to have a better life quality when they are really old. To illustrate, if people live longer, the last years of their lives will require great amounts of money, for illnesses related to old age will still be present. So, only people who do not have money will not be able to live happily in their last years if people’s life spans are increased. Likewise, families will need more money and time to take care of the elder members of their family. In fact, if people have longer lives, families will need to have more economic resources to take care of the older members of their families,

for they will need to pay for special treatments and will have to cover their older relatives’ expenses for longer time. To sum up, having a longer life span does not mean life quality will be better.

In contrast, people with longer life spans can have more experiences and spend more time with their families. They will be able to enjoy their retirements for more time, travel to more places and share special moments with their loved ones for more years. However, living longer does not mean living healthier, if people live longer lives it could mean that their last years will be riddled with diseases which will not let them enjoy their retirement years. Also, as people grow older, they become less independent, meaning that they will not be able to travel or do things alone since they will need constant help. On the other hand, people would be able to contribute to their societies more if they lived longer lives. Scientists would be able to do more research on relevant topics, which can bring about breakthroughs that could improve people’s lives. Nonetheless, this idea requires scientists to work constantly over the course of their lives, which is not likely. Once people reach an old age they need to rest from stressful situations, yet forcing them to contribute more to their societies will make their Continued on page 5

Longer lives.... continued from page 4 last years painful and would show that people were not grateful enough for what they already had contributed.

Many people think

about life expectancy as the amount of time a person will be able to live. For centuries, scientists have allowed people to live longer lives thanks to advances in technology and a better understanding of human anatomy. Nowadays, people are able to live longer than ever, and scientists are trying to improve people’s life spans even further. However, experts have to consider the consequences of beating old age, for the disadvantages of people living longer are greater than the advantages. Therefore, researchers should not try to aid people to have longer lives because longer life spans can cause afflictions to the planet and to human’s life quality.

PRESERVING

INDIGENOUS

LANGUAGES By: Juan José Bahamonde, Level I Instructor: Kelly Connelly

People can do several activities to preserve and support Indigenous languages. First, governments should create programs to help Indigenous peoples and to preserve their language and culture. For example, the Australian Government created the Indigenous Languages and Arts program. This program "provides over $20 million annually to community-based organizations for projects that support participation in and maintenance of Indigenous culture through languages and arts." (Department of Communications and the Arts). In addition, people can create optional teaching programs in schools. For instance, extracurricular activities where students can learn about Indigenous culture and their languages. Besides, writers could create a project to write books about the life of Indigenous people. These books or articles can include their culture, language and customs. That way, Indigenous history will be remembered, and many people could learn about it. In conclusion, there are many activities that people can do to support and preserve Indigenous languages.

JOB

DISSATISFACTION

IN JAPAN By: Gabriela Lapuerta, Level II Instructor: Ann Marie Carranza

Job dissatisfaction is a

global phenomenon that affects many workers, especially Japanese citizens. Because Japan has Confucian values integrated within the culture, the group is always more valuable than the individual. To illustrate, it’s not uncommon for a Japanese worker to skip vacations in order to please a boss. Another reason Japanese men and women are unhappy with their jobs is stress. In fact, the country has a word to describe deaths caused by overworking: “karoshi”. Every year, hundreds of people die due to heart attacks, strokes or suicides, all of them related to work stress. Finally, Japanese workers feel that their efforts don’t have a big impact in the world. Because of this, they end up feeling discouraged and depressed. In conclusion, the volume of job dissatisfaction in Japan shows that modern societies don’t care about the wellbeing of the citizens, as long as they keep producing and sustaining the industrial economy.

FEARS TURN INTO

CHALLENGES

By: Carla D. Simbaña R., Level I Instructor: Kelly Connelly Assignment: Write a journal entry about your experience in a class on your first day.

It was my first day in swimming class, and all I had on my mind were my nutritionist´s words: “For your next appointment I want you to tell me that you are freeing yourself from your fears”. As soon as I walked into the changing rooms, I realized it wasn´t only the water I was afraid of, but it was the whole experience. While I was facing my insecurity of wearing a swimsuit, I had flashbacks from my childhood. The teacher was waiting for us. After we got into the pool, the teacher asked us about our expectations of this class. A 60 year old man, a woman in her thirties and I agreed that it was about time to learn how to swim. After a while, three senior women and a young Argentinian woman jumped into the pool. At that moment I committed myself to learn from each of my new classmates, and left my ego out of my head. After the breathing lesson, I had to admit that deep in my heart I felt that this was the beginning of a new stage of my life: my fears will become the new challenges in my life.

PSYCHO

By: Andrea Jaramillo, Level I Instructor: Kelly Connelly

Dear Mr. Robert Bloch.

My name is Andrea Jaramillo and I have just finished reading your book Psycho. I need to tell you that this is one of my favorite books so far. I was wondering what you were thinking when you wrote it because the plot is so different from other novels that talk about the same subjects. I think that this book represents a toxic relationship between son and mother, and the consequences that this could cause. For me, it is important when an author talks about problems such as that. It is interesting when a novel represents the daily life of some different people that we are never going to know. On the other hand, I like the structure you used in the book. It is like a diary but told in third person. I think this about the book because the storyteller knows the feelings and thoughts of the characters really well. Finally, I want to thank you because this book made me think more about mental problems, how to deal with them and how to discover them. This book is a good tool for psychologists and psychiatrists and I know that I am going to use it through my whole life.

DOES TECHNOLOGY

MAKE US FEEL MORE

ALONE? By: Maria Judith Alban, Level I Instructor: Kelly Connelly

Technology makes us more alone because of three main reasons. First, when someone is checking social media, it seems everyone has a perfect life, perfect friends, and perfect family. As result that person feels his or her life is boring and lonely. It doesn’t mind if he or she has a nice life, that person is always wishing to have a different life. Also people are getting used to having virtual relationships. It means that physical meetings aren’t common anymore, and people spend too much time on their cellphones, computers, or tablets. Finally video games have become the favorite hobbie among teenagers. They don’t share time with their families and friends because they spend their free time playing video games. Technology could be an extremely useful tool when people understand how to manage it without losing contact with people around them. Instructor comments: This was the first paragraph the student had written in my class. The topic sentence is clear and direct and the supporting ideas do a great job of both supporting the topic, but also they are very well explained. There are only some minor errors with contractions and commas after transition words. I have maintained the writing as it was written with mistakes and all.

By: Stephanie Rubio, Level I Instructor: Tomas Medina

I would improve three important things

about Fulbright Program. The first thing I would like to change is about schedules. I think those should be more flexible because you only have one kind of schedule that is Monday to Thursday. In some cases people do not have enough time to take classes in those hours, so Fulbright could offer more options to increase it demand. Another aspect I would like Fulbright to do is to implement a cafeteria inside the institution. There are some times students arrive early and it would be good if there was a place where students could buy coffee or snacks in order to feel relaxed and share a little time with their classmates. Finally, I think Fulbright should consider doing open houses in which students show their knowledge and have a better engagement with people. It could be once a year and have different themes to entertain Fulbright students, teachers, and the general public. Fulbright is the best English Teaching Program in Ecuador, but it is important that they consider some facts to make students feel more comfortable and learning more in a better way. Instructor’s comments Here we have a very clear and effective topic sentence, and wonderfully clear use of transition words. The explanation sentences are not too long, and they say exactly what needs to be said in order to aid in the reader’s understanding of their supporting ideas. The original paragraph only had a small issue with a run-on, which was fixed here. And in general, the ideas presented are definitely worth considering for the program and have been presented in such a way that best benefits the program. They are very well thought out.

Congratulations to all students for finishing this cycle!!!

Good luck in your future cycles here at the ETP!

Congratulations Eric and Obada on finishing your first cycle!

Living Longer or Living Better By: Jorge Villamar, Level VI Instructor: Camille Henderson

Since the start of society, human beings have wanted to live longer. The desire to find the fountain of eternal youth or figure out the magical recipe of immortality has taken the sleep of more than one. In the same manner, recently, scientists at Harvard Medical School were able to reverse the aging process in old mice (Harvard Medical School, 2018)1. Surely, someone would think this discovery is great, but do not get excited, unless that someone is a mouse, of course. Until now, the aging process is an inevitable step which all living beings have to go through. All the people at some point in their life have lived it or will live it. For an adult, there was a time when he or she was young, but now the young offer him or her the seat on the bus. Life brings many changes and aging requires people to adapt to them. Nature follows a natural cycle in order to survive in an environment that needs a balance between the living beings who leave this world and those who come to take their place. If this balance is broken, the survival of humanity as it is known today will be irreparably affected, generating scarcity of resources, social conflicts, and environmental problems. These problems will be much more serious than humanity already has today. Therefore, scientists should not try to help people beat old age and prolong the life of human beings. As the American writer Maya Angelou said, "We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives right now¨ (Kanning, 2014)2.

To begin, prolonging people's lives would mean detriment of the lives of many others. For example, if people could live longer, it would mean that they would have more productive years. This means people will have the possibility to work longer and they will occupy their jobs for more years. If this happens, jobs will be reduced, and young people will have more problems to get a job. This situation will generate higher levels of unemployment. Besides, people who have a longer life will request health services for a longer time. In other words, the beneficiaries of social security plans will be more numerous and will request benefits for a much longer

period than at present. If health services have an increase in the demand for their services and do not have an increase in the number of members or contributors, health insurance will not be able to cover the needs of all beneficiaries. This will mean an increase in the values of health insurance, and the restriction of medical services for all those who cannot afford them. Furthermore, prolonging the lives of human beings will worsen the problem of overpopulation on the planet and increase the scarcity of resources. For instance, people would inhabit the planet for longer which would break the natural balance of nature. In this way, people would consume more and more natural resources and generate greater amounts of pollution. Unless the prolongation of the life of human beings comes hand in hand with learning to eat plastic, humanity must not forget the fate of entire civilizations in places, such as Easter Island in Chile or Teotihuacán in Mexico. In these places the population was dense and now there are only empty ruins because of the overexploitation of their limited resources. As can be seen, prolonging the life of the population would generate serious problems for many other people in society. Moreover, the possibility of living longer would generate disinterest in daily life and in the future. To demonstrate, people would not worry about reaching their goals, for they would have more years of life and time would no longer be an important point to be considered. Human beings tend to achieve their goals for various reasons, and one of the most important motivations is the limited and ephemeral time that people remain in this world. If this motivation disappears, activities such as performing music, doing sports, reading good books, making love, writing texts, and so forth, will no longer have the same meaning and will no longer produce the same happiness and satisfaction that these activities generate in people today. Additionally, delaying the time of death in human beings would increase the desire to live longer instead of improving their quality of life. By way of illustration, human beings by nature have always wanted more than they already have. If

Continued on page 9

The Fulbright Idea

Living Longer…continued from page 8 humanity succeeds in prolonging lives of people, they will inevitably want to live longer and longer. This will mean that more resources will be invested in prolonging life rather than improving the quality of life. Humans should not seek more time to live but should look for meaningful experiences to live. Likewise, living longer does not necessarily mean that people will live without ailments until the end of their days. As an illustration, people who live two hundred years certainly would be incredibly physically and mentally deteriorated. Nowadays, even though someone exceeds one hundred years of age with a good quality of life and luxurious medical care, his or her body will be too weakened and may even suffer from illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, and mental deterioration. If someone could celebrate his or her two hundredth birthday, he or she would hardly be able to walk on his or her own, see with his or her own eyes, or think clearly. It is clear that living longer does not necessarily mean living better. Now, some people might argue that there are excellent reasons for scientists to find a way to prolong people's lives. As an example, although evolution does an amazing labor when given enough time, it works too slowly to help humans fix their current difficulties. For this reason, if science is able to develop ways to stop aging, it will be helping nature to climb one more step in the evolutionary chain in a technical and controlled way. However, altering the natural course of nature due to artificially delaying cellular aging would put the delicate natural balance of the planet at risk. Evolution requires the aging and death of all living beings to leave space for each new generation and maintain the correct cycle of life. Both are necessary to provide raw material which the planet needs to survive. On the other hand, another argument in favor of prolonging human life is people will have access to new medical procedures which would extend their lives. For example, cell rejuvenation treatments, replacement of aging

organs by younger ones, and even arresting aging processes may be some of the solutions to the problems that humanity faces against aging and thus have a longer life. However, access to these procedures would be a luxury to which only a few could have access to. The inequality of death that exists today is a real problem which would increase if the wealthiest people could extend their life expectancy far above those who cannot do it. This would mean that only the richest people will have the right to live longer, while the poorest will be destined to live shorter lives. In other words, the gap between rich and poor would be bigger and more unfair. To conclude, as Maya Angelou said in her brilliant quote, humanity must focus on improving people's quality of life instead of increasing their life time. The goal of science should be to improve health, not a longer existence if that existence is painful and has lost all significance. Scientists should help people live well, but also allow them to die in peace and dignity. The objective of delaying aging can become a frivolity, something vain like not having wrinkles on the skin or not having gray hair. Benefits that could only be achieved by wealthy people, which will worsen the disparity between rich and poor, and increase inequality, unemployment, and restriction of health services. If the goal is to increase people's lives, it must be achieved through the development of medications that reduce the conditions which can cause old age becomes a hell. None of the above means that people can take a pill that will allow them to dance at their hundredth birthday party, but the quality of life of people improves within their normal years of life. Non-alteration of the natural cycle of life means that human beings have enough resources to survive, and thus better chances of a full life. The goal should not be to try to beat old age, but to try to live better. 1
