Masthead: KERRANG’s masthead is covered up by the main image, however its just visible to notice the brand of the magazine. In most of KERRANG’s magazines they have something covering it up whether it be the main image or the cover lines. This is because they are a well known brand of magazine and music oriented company. The KERRANG logo is the masthead as it is iconic with all of the cuts going through the masthead. I believe they used this text to remind people of KERRANG with the font they use.

Main Image: The main image stands out very well on this issue of KERRANG as it has the gaze into the readers eyes. The image also takes up most of the magazine instantly drawing readers eyes towards it. The man (Biffy Clyro) seems to be screaming to the readers of the magazine which isn't something you always see on a magazine, so again, it will draw you into seeing what the magazine is fully about.

Cover Lines: On this magazine there are a load of different cover lines. One of which give the word ‘win’ in large capital letters standing out on the middle of the right hand side. When people see the word ‘win’ it seems to draw them in to see what item they could get. Another cover line is the ‘ten amazing stories we never dared to print’. Using this sentence makes people want to know more about the mysteries of the stories, leading them to purchasing the magazine.

House style: in this issue of KERRANG there is a lot of blue as the background colour. However, throughout all of the KERRANG magazines there is it seems to be that red and yellow are the main two colours, I feel as if this is because they are two VERY noticeable colours when put to the human eye. Also, I believe that it could make people think of a brand associated with the colours, for red and yellow this could be McDonalds.

Price: Giving this magazine a brief look over you cant really see the price standing out. The price is actually hidden next to the barcode, It is really small. In my opinion this is the only downside to this magazine.

Target audience: I feel as if the target audience of the KERRANG magazines are people aged 16 -30 as the brand of magazines have a lot of modern rock music. I also believe it is aimed at both males and females, it more or less just depends on whether they like rock music.

Masthead: The XXL magazines masthead is simple and compact, however it stands out to show the brand of the magazine to the customers. The mastheads text is white on a red background. This is great for this specific issue as there aren’t too many bright colours allowing the masthead just to stand out. Also, the fact that the box is red means the attraction of the audience is stronger as red is a lot more noticeable compared to other colours. The masthead also has a little slogan above it. ‘Hip-hop on a higher level’ is what it says. This could mean they are the best out there for all things hip-hop. There is also repetition of the letter ‘H’ for this slogan which is something just to point out.

Main Image: The main image takes up most of the magazine. It has 50 cent as the main image indicating this edition is about him. Something that will be reoccurring is the gaze towards the audience. In this XXL magazine it seems to be a less ‘crazy’ facial expression. Instead of screaming, it’s a more serious face with a hint of intimidation in there. The camera shot is a close up as its focusing on the head and the facial features and expressions. As 50 cent has a dark skin colour because he is an African American he himself stands out from the backdrop which seems to be a bright white halo surrounding his head. This ‘halo’ effect could suggest that he is the higher power in the hip-hop/rap sector of music.

Cover Lines: For this edition of the XXL magazine, there aren’t a lot of cover lines. That is the reason I chose it, for the diversity of the different magazines. In the top right hand corner of the magazine it says lots of different artist names. I believe this indicates that there will be sections of the magazine dedicated to them and their music. For this magazine there is no cover lines showing any type of thing you can win or any other stories that will be inside of the magazine to draw you in. This edition of the XXL magazine is bare but bare in a good way.

House style: The house style of this magazine (excluding the masthead) is mainly darker colours such as black, white and brown. I guess this benefits the masthead as it is bright red and white. I feel as if the darker colours allow the magazine to look more sleek.

Price: The pricing of this magazine is located on the barcode, just like the previous magazine. I feel as if this is a repetitive thingthroughout the music magazines. They are not like the average gossip magazines that show the price in a cover line.

Target audience: The target audience for this magazine would be male 16-30 year olds as again, linking with the last magazine, the music is quite modern.

Masthead: The VIBE masthead has the same effect as the KERRANG masthead, the fact that it is covered up by the main image. VIBE across the top easily allows the reader to instantly know what brand of newspaper they are looking into. The kind of text that is used is sharp and curvy at the same time which in this instance gives off a really clean and positive effect. VIBE magazine doesn’t have a tagline at all to go with the masthead.

Main Image: The main image of this magazine is again, directly in the middle, centre of attention and taking up a lot of the page. However for this magazine it is a female who is the main image. The shot of the image is a medium shot, this is mainly to show the fact that she is naked but covering up her breasts. The fact that she is doing this gives off a provocative vibe, it gives off a sexualised look. Also, following a regular theme of the magazines is the fact that she is giving the gaze directly into the consumers eyes. The gaze and the facial expressions link back to the provocative look she is giving off. A sexualised stare. The reason she stands out is obviously the nakedness, but the house style of the magazine allows her to flare out. The house style is pink and white. As she has brown hair and bright skin it allows her to stand out. The reason she (Kelly Rowland) is on the front cover is because she is the main attraction of that specific issue as is with every other magazine having a singer as the main image.

Cover Lines: For the VIBE magazine it seems that there are a lot of cover lines. Not really any pictures to come with them but there is a lot of writing that really stands out. There is the cover line that links to the main image which is Kelly Rowland. It says ‘Finally bares all’ linking to the fact she is naked. On the right hand side it shows a bunch of different names indicating that they will be included within the magazine. This is similar to the XXL magazine in the slide before this.

House Style: The house style to this magazine is pink and white. I feel as if these colours give a soft feeling off. The fact that pink isusually associated with girls is great for this edition of the VIBE magazines as Kelly Rowland is in the middle with pink all around her. Also using pink really stands out on the cover lines in this magazine.

Price: The pricing of this magazine is also located on the barcode, just like the previous magazine. However the barcode this time is located on the left hand side compared to XXL and KERRANG where it’s on the right.

Target audience: I believe the target audience is females around the ages of 25 – 35 as it has the main image as someone who is in their early 30s and the fact that there is a fashion section as a cover line. Males don’t usually go for the fashion aspect of a magazine as girls might do.

Masthead: The masthead of the Q magazine is similar to the XXL magazine. A large red box in the top right hand corner with a white text. Being different to the XXL magazine, the Q’s masthead is covered up partially by the main image which is a group photo of the Arctic Monkeys. The masthead in this specific issue stands out really well as there is a lot of dark colours, again, similar to the XXL magazine.

Main Image: The main image is this time, of a group of people, a band to be specific. This band is the Arctic Monkeys. For this image, only one of them are giving the gaze into the consumers eyes as the rest are just looking off aimlessly. They are taking up most of the magazine as most main images do and they have text and other images overlapping them. The fact that the main colour is black allows their faces to stand out as they are Caucasian. All four males have slick and shiny hair which is something to point out, if you like their music you might idolize them and want to be like them, leading you to buy this magazine.

Cover Lines: The cover lines in the Q magazine are at the top or the bottom, there is no middle ground. At the top it shows that this issue is a ‘17-page special’ with another magazine bundled with it. Going down to the bottom of the magazine it shows two stories titled ‘white lies’ and ‘Richard Branson’; if these interest someone, they might get the urge to purchase the magazine. A similarity to the XXL and VIBE magazines, the Q mag has some artist names down the side of the page showing that they are also included within this edition. Lastly there is the main story about the Arctic Monkeys, this is an interview by the Q magazine. This gives the Q magazine a voice to share opinions and facts with the audience.

House Style: Q’s house style throughout all of their magazines seem to be different, however they keep with the red and white themed masthead all the way through. For this issue seems to be just a simple black and white. Black images and backgrounds but white text to overlap that and stand out completely.

Price: The pricing of this magazine is also again located on the barcode section of the front page as it is with all of the magazines.

Target audience: The target audience for the Q magazine would be both genders as there are different pieces od the magazine that link to each gender. I feel as if there isn't much of an age rating for the Q magazines but anyone under the age of 40 would seem appropriately linked to this magazine.

Layout: The layout of the KERRANG content page is set out really well, on the left half of the page it has the main image with an offer to win some shoes, then underneath that there is a message from the editor which some people might find interesting. Aside from that, on the right hand side there is the actual contents of the magazine. It has different tabs on the things that are in the magazine such as ‘news’ and ‘features’. Across the top there is the yellow banner with the title of the page which is one of the first things I noticed other than the red ‘Metallica’. A great part of the layout scheme is the offer in the bottom right promoting a subscription for the KERRANG magazine, the best part about this is that its not in the way of anything else on the page. The main image really stands out as it covers up the banner at the top. Also, the image is black and white when everything else is colourful.

Colour: The way colour is used throughout this contents page has given a really good effect to the page. Linking back to the front cover, using red and yellow (which are the main colours of the page) could remind the consumer of another brand associated with these colours. For red and yellow, it would be McDonalds.

Images: In the contents pages of the KERRANG magazines there’s usually a main image and a few other images surrounding. This issue has exactly that. Keeping up with the other magazines shows consistency, therefore allowing a long time reader to find what they want as quick as possible. The actual images in this issue of KERRANG are used really well. As the main attraction of the contents page is Metallica, the image takes up over 1 quarter of the page, nearly half. The fact that they have used the picture in black and white allows it to stand out with the addition of the red text. At the bottom there is a mans face for the editors part, this picture is beneficial to the editors part of the page as the face seems scrambled (edited) with other parts of other faces.

Voice: For the contents page, I feel as if there’s two voices talking to the reader. Those voices are advising and instructing. Most of the contents page is giving you advice that might benefit you, for example; ‘win’ is something that speaks for itself. If you read where it says that you might get a chance to win something- and you do, you are better off altogether. An instruction is that the contents page gives is subscribing to the magazine if you are interested in more music news. The type of language used throughout the page has a slight slang twist to it. “KILL `EM” is slang and that is used on the main story. This will cater for the younger ones such as teenagers that are reading the KERRANG magazine.

Page 9: Full analysis of music magazines - Media

Layout: The layout of the XXL magazines contents page is done really well. Its simple but effective. It has the contents page title at the top but on the XXL magazine its called ‘the A-side’. It then has the contents page down the left and the main image on the right. The contents follow the outline of 50 cents body instead of having a box to keep the contents in, it just flows down the page. On the middle of the image there is a quote that states there would be no 50 cent there would be no soulja boy. This links to the image as there is 50 cent and soulja boy standing there. Having this quote completely backs up the image. The logo of the XXL magazine is in the top right hand corner underneath the masthead – reminding you what magazine you’re actually reading (If you have issues remembering things)

Colour: XXL has a basic colour scheme which is black, red and white. It might be basic but it works. Usually it comes down to having a white background, red parts for the important or ‘hot’ stories and black for the text that isn't as important or ‘hot’ but is still useful information.

Images: The only image in the XXL contents page is the 50 Cent and Soulja boy image. The quote that comes with it “If there wasn’t no 50 cent there would be no soulja boy” makes it as if they have a bond with each other. As there is an image of them together and 50 cent is looking over soulja boys shoulder its as if 50 sent is his guardian or higher power. The gazes that they are giving off are both completely different. Soulja boy is giving off this laid back ‘cool’ look into the readers eyes. On the other hand 50 cent is looking over his shoulder as if you have just done something to annoy him with an extremely serious look. Also again, something with all of the magazines, the image overlaps something else.

Voice: For the voice of the XXL contents page I feel as if its mainly just advice. Its telling you what there is down the left hand side of the page, no messing about with ads or promotions. The language that is used through this page is slang. You can expect this from amagazine that follows the hip-hop/rap genre as most of the actual lyrics are slang which selected people understand. The font that is used seems to benefit the type of language used and allow it to show without judgement, the text is bold and is really noticeable at a first glance of the magazine.

Page 10: Full analysis of music magazines - Media

Layout: For the VIBE magazine, the contents page layout seems to follow what the others are following. Have an image taking up most of the page, “contents” at the top and the actual contents down either hand side. For this page there isn't any cut offs, its all in one place, there’s no boxes with bits of info in. The contents part of the VIBE magazine is similar to the XXL magazine with it following the shape of something, for this its following Shanells leg.

Colour: VIBEs colour scheme is just black and white. The text is black and the background is white, these colours still don’t distract the viewer from the main focus which are the two women. Wearing simple outfits with no bright colours allows them to stand out on the white background.

Images: There is only one image in the VIBE magazine which is of two women who are Nicki Minaj and Shanell. In the time this was printed (2009) they weren’t well known artists. Through some research, in 2009 Nicki Minaj was just starting to get big after a discovery of her mixtapes. Leading back to what they are wearing in the image, they are wearing very feminine clothing with their hands on their hips and striking poses which caught my attention instantly. Nicki Minaj is also looking provocative as she is plumping her breasts out leading do a male audience to see more.

Text: The repetitive way the word ‘Contents’ at the top right is presented reminds the reader that this is from the VIBE magazine, due to its personal font choices. The font is simple and bold, but very striking to draw the attention in. The subtitle font is the same, its used in other issues of VIBE magazines, its also again, recognisable to the audience as being a signature font.

Voice: The voice used in the VIBE contents page is simply advising what is in the magazine, down the contents it has page numbers and what's on them with a bit of a story to drag the audiences in to those specific pages. The type of language used in the text isn't slang, its just average language that everyone can understand so all ages can see what they want from this magazine.

Page 11: Full analysis of music magazines - Media

Layout: The way this is laid out seems to again, follow the outset of all other magazines. Q has the contents on the left side all the way down to the bottom, they have the large banner across the top to allow the reader to know what page they are on. There is then a large picture dominating the page, for this issue it is Adele's face and underneath that there is the QREVIEW that was mentioned on the front cover of the issue. The top right of the page has the date and the issue number just in case people are collecting the Q magazine. The bottom left of the magazine has the ‘Every month’ section which speaks for itself so people can still check that out.

Colour: Q has the same type of colour scheme as the XXL magazine, however in my opinion, utilises it better. They use the colour red so much more to mark everything such as subtitles, page numbers and logos. This draws the eye to those places to allow the reader to find out information of where the black text is. Black is also used for the banners with a white text so it jumps out at you as they are colours that contrast. White is used mainly for the background. I believe white is the best colour to use as it allows everything to be seen on the page, most colours put over white are easily noticeable.

Images: The main photo in the picture is of Adele who dominates the page with a close up of her face. As it is a close up the expression is very simple but effective as she is giving a gaze towards the consumer. Her face in this image is the main focus as her neck and shoulders are blurred out. Using this picture is useful as it shows whom the magazine is mainly featuring.

Text: The title of the magazine is headlined with ‘contents’ which is in a big bold text highlighting the fact that its an important page. It being white on a black background really catches your eye. The main part of the contents, the column on the left has a mixture of red, white and black fonts. The ‘features’ banner is red to draw more attention to the headline.

Voice: The voice used in the Q magazine is advising and entertaining. It gives you advice on what is actually further into the Q magazine and lets you know what you are in for. Then it entertains you by giving you a small sentence with each page to draw you in tosee more. The type of language used is formal. There is barely any slang throughout the page.

Page 13: Full analysis of music magazines - Media

• Here is an article from KERRANG about the band My Chemical Romance. It was on the right of the page and the brightest thing on the page, everything else was dark coloured. As this is a bright coloured article it catches your eye to see what its about, using red is the best colour for this job as it’s the most noticeable colour.

• The headline of this column is in a sharp banner type form with black and white bold text in it. The text used within the headline will also draw people in ‘Here’s a teaser’ makes people want to see what new songs will be coming from this band. The subheadings are in bold red writing to split off each paragraph, to help with this there is a black line. The text to explain of the stories in the column is coloured black as it works well with a white background.

• The article is structured in a way that it goes down a list of songs explaining/informing what the new songs will be like. Also to point out, the banner at the top looks like an arrow pointing down, showing the route to follow while reading.

• The language used within this column is a slang based language, ‘Down n dirty’ ‘rock n roll’ are both slang talk. Other than the words here and there, anyone will be able to understand what the paragraphs are talking about.
