performance from us. We tried our best, although we had to face some

INTRODUCTION
Tesco is Britains leading retailer. They are one of the top three retailers in the
world, operating over 3,700 stores globally and employing over 440,000
people. Tesco operates in 13 countries outside the UK Republic of Ireland,
Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, and Poland in Europe; China, Japan,
Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and India in Asia, and the U.S.
Everyday lif e keeps changing and the Tesco team excels at responding to those
changes. Tesco has grown from a market stall, set up by Jack Cohen in 1919.
The name Tesco first appeared above a shop in Edgware in 1929 and since
then the company has grown and developed, responding to new opportunities
and pioneering in many innovations.
By the early 1990s, they faced strong competition and needed a new strategy.
They are good at buying and selling goods but had begun to forget the
customers. Sir Terry Leahy, who became Chief Executive in 1997, asked
customers the simple question - what are we doing wrong?". They then
invested in the things that matter to customers. For example, we launched
their loyalty scheme Club card and Tesco.com, our internet home shopping
service.

Going the extra mile for customers has been key to our growth. We want to
make customers' lives easier and better in any way we can. We want to appeal
to customers and give them a reason to come back to Tesco.
Why I want to join this company?
They have five diff erent store formats, each tailored to our customers' needs.
Their Express stores off er customers great value, quality and fresh
food close to where they live and work. They sell a range of products including fresh
produce, wines, and spirits, and they have an in -store bakery.
Their Metro stores bring the convenience of Tesco to town and city
centre locations. Metros cater for thousands of busy custom ers each week and off er a
tailored range of mainly food products, including ready -meals and sandwiches.

Their Superstores provide a larger range of
products for their customers and have non-food ranges such as DVDs and books. They
can also off er other services such as caf es, home shopping, and petrol filling stations.
Their Extra stores off er the widest range of food and non-food lines,
ranging from electrical equipment to bedding and cookware, clothing, health and beauty
and seasonal items such as garden furniture.
Their Home plus stores is dedicated to non-food, including clothing.
They off er our widest range of non-food products in store. Their largest stores have a
catalogue shop, with most products available to take home.
Making Tesco a great place to work
They know that their people want four things from at Tesco:
y To be treated with trust and respect.
y A manager who helps me.
y An interesting job.
y An opportunity to get on.
Everyone is welcome
Tesco aim is to reflect the communities they serve and mirror the workforce that they
recruit from. They try to make sure everyone can work in a way that suits their
circumstances.

9
They support flexible working, off ering part-time roles, and
encouraging job-sharing opportunities and shift swapping where possible.
A real opportunity to get on
Everyone who works here is encouraged to broaden their experience and work in
diff erent areas of the company. They want ambitious people to progress and encourage
them to do so.
As part of Every Little Helps our commitment to their people is that, they will give them
the opportunity to get on so that they are able to get the training and support they need
to do our job and to develop their careers at Tesco.
There are number of ways our people can achieve this, through participating on an
Options Development Programme, training for an Apprenticeship or studying for a
qualification whilst at work.
They also use Talent Planning to identif y and fill our vacancies, with over 12,000 of our
managers having annual discussions regarding their development and potential. That is
why over 80% of our management positions are recruited from within.
For example, back in 1979, Sir Terry Leahy, our current Chief Executive joined as a
management trainee.

Share their Success
At Tesco, they like to ensure our staff s cared for financially. Therefore, whether you have
been with us 3 months or 3 years they run three successful share schemes, all helping
you end up with more cash in your pocket.
Shares in Success
So, to thank their people for the success they've brought the business, they give free
shares to everyone who's worked here for one year at the end of the financial year
(February). They share a proportion of our profit amongst our staff, based on salaries.
These Tesco shares are held in trust for 5 years, and after that, they can take them, tax-
free.
Save As We Earn
Every October those people who have been here a year get the option to save up to £50
every 4 weeks for either 3 or 5 years and receive a tax-free bonus at the end. we can use
our savings and bonus to buy Tesco shares at up to 20% less than the market price, or
take the cash.

Pension
hey loo
after our future too
None of us know what the future holds, but you can be sure that peace of mind and
financial security for their staff is very important to us. Planning ahead to their
retirement is easy with their award winning, Tesco pension scheme.
With a Tesco pension you are able to understand how financially secure you will be when
we decide to retire. As well as pension provision we have access to a life assurance
scheme that will provide financial protection for our family.
Our leisure ti e
Their staff work hard, so we believe they should be able to make the most of their leisure
time. To help with this they have negotiated discounts and special offers that are
available e clusively to Tesco staff.
There are discounts on theme parks, holidays and gym membership that are available all
year round. There are also special offers throughout the year, to make sure there s
always something for everyone.

New world, new s ! ills
´Life does not stand still in a Tesco store, so you will not eitherµ
It" s about making sure their customers always get the great service they

end. It" s just not the way we work.
Living Service
All of their store managers go through their Stores Leadership Programme. This is a
course designed to provide technical training, refresh operating skills and deliver Every
Little Helps for their customers, people and operations. Store managers learn to be more
personally effective, deliver simpler replenishment processes, and ensure the team
works effectively to ma # imise productivity.
