Finding Full-text

Full-text

Some article citations found in databases may not have links to full-text. This applies particularly to Cinahl where recent content in some key journals may be embargoed.

There may also be occasions when links to full-text from citations in Summon may not work.

There are several steps you can take to overcome this.

Embargos on latest content

Embargos are put in place by publishers to limit access to the latest journal content, usually the last 12 months.

This is the case for a number of key journals in Cinahl e.g. Journal of Clinical Nursing and Journal of Advanced Nursing.

Use the A-Z of e-Journals to check if an article is available in another database eg. the Wiley-Blackwell collection includes the latest content for the above journals.

Linking from Summon

Instead of linking to an article, you may get a similar message to this:

How to access full-text

When full-text is not immediately available, you can navigate to an article manually as follows:

Make a note the title of the journal, the date, volume, part and page number. You will need this information to help you quickly locate the article when you are re-directed to the hosting database.

Go to A-Z of e-Journals and enter the title of the journal (or a few words from the title) in the search box.

A-Z of e-journalsFrom the results list, select a database with the correct date coverage for the journal.

Here you would select Wiley-Blackwell Journals to access an article from the latest year of Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Linking to the journalYou will be taken directly to the journal, usually to the first issue. Look for a link to the back issues, archives.

In this example, click on See all

Navigating to the article

Follow the links to find the correct issue and browse the articles within the issue. Usually they are in page number order.

Linking from Proquest

Unlike Cinahl, search results from Proquest may include a 360 link instead of a PDF

Examples of Proquest databases

British Nursing Index, Nursing & Allied Health Psychology Journals

The 360 link will automatically re-route you to the hosting database and will link you directly to the article without the need for further navigation.

Requesting articles

If the A-Z of e-Journals does not direct you to another database, you can simply request the article. This service is free and it only takes a few days for articles to arrive.

Complete and sign a request form for each item and include a handwritten signature (this is needed for copyright purposes).

The form can be returned in person or by post. Alternatively, you can scan the form and return it by email to [email protected]

Problems limiting to full-text

Tip! If you limit your results to full-text items you may missimportant new articles due to embargos on the latest content.

At levels 5 and 6 you will be required to do a systematic literature search for a literature review. Limiting search results to full-text would not be considered to be an acceptable exclusion criteria.

Instead, use the A-Z of e-Journals to locate the full article in another database. If it is still not available, you caneasily request a copy of the article.
