Here are the two most common series used in Thirds Football:
The SECOND DIGIT
Backfield Series. The Second Digit indicates the general pattern of the backs, which
in turn assigns the ball carrier and the type of blocking. All of these series may be run
with or without motion (i.e. to or away from the wing). The backfield actions are as
follows:
20’s Series: Buck series. FB fills to one side of center
with both HB’s going to the opposite side.
80’s Series: Belly Series. FB bends his path to the tacklewith a crossover step and the QB reverse pivots. All
backs move in the same direction.
Point of Attack:
The third and last digit is the point of attack or the hole to be hit. Thereare nine points of attack numbered from right to left. With the exception of the two flank
areas, the holes are numbered directly over the seven offensive linemen. These lineman
are also referred to by these numbers. For example, the Right End is the 2 man, the Right
Tackle is the 3 man, etc. The last digit not only indicates the point of attack, but also
indicates the direction of backfield flow. With the third digit, 1 through 4 means that the
flow is to the right. 6 through 9 indicates flow to the left.

Passing Game
Our passing game has evolved over the years from a pure Wing-T passing scheme as
we utilize more spread formations. We will now exploit the advantage of shotgun
formations, but will maintain Wing-T terminology. The passing game is based on Play
Action passes, Sprint Out passes, Three-step and Five-step drop passes, and Screen
passes. Patterns will either be built into the play or called individually as a suffix to the
play. When two or three patterns are called, the first ALWAYS refers to the widest
receiver and the second refers to the next receiver inside, and so forth.
