Curriculum (55 units required to graduate)Most of your fi rst year curriculum will consist of core classes required for all MBA students. This ensures all Eller MBAs earn a well-rounded foundation for critical thinking and analysis skills that are further sharpened during experiential learning, internships, and year two of the program. Core classes are 30 units of the required total needed to graduate. The remaining units are available for students to take elective courses.

• Innovation is supported with instruction by world-class faculty focused on game-changing research that emphasizes critical thinking and allows graduates to thrive in dynamic business environments.

• Application takes place as traditional classroom instruction is enhanced through multiple opportunities to apply lessons learned to real practitioner driven settings including consulting projects, entrepreneurship, case competitions, internships, and a global business experience.

• Communication is vital as success in business requires a network of relationships which must be managed and facilitated with superior interpersonal skills.

With emphasis on Innovation, Application, and Communication, Eller MBAs develop as business leaders who can not only solve problems with a strong critical thinking framework, but also eff ectively communicate their solutions to a diverse group of stakeholders.

Program Starts Wednesday, August 2 To help support new MBAs from around the world, we have an international pre-launch that starts Wednesday, August 2. Your Eller MBA program launches on Monday, August 7 with valuable information that will be critical to your success over the next two years. Over the next fi ve days, MBAs meet faculty, learn about program expectations, engage in meaningful networking, experience a case-study competition, and learn how to position themselves in the competitive employment marketplace. All MBAs are expected to attend and actively participate in order to set the stage for an exceptional experience over the next 21 months of their Eller career. Your MBA experience continues with a week-long Leadership and Teams course beginning on Monday, August 14.

Those new to Tucson are encouraged to move and arrive two weeks prior to the program start date of Monday, August 7. This will give you time to complete personal and logistical aspects of your life such as attending to family needs, establishing change of address and mail, setting up utilities, arranging your new place of living, and becoming familiar with your new community.

Eller MBA Curriculum OverviewThe mission of Eller MBA is to deliver excellence in graduate management education:

Most of the core classes are taught in consecutive eight-week periods — Sessions A and B — over the period of one semester. The exceptions to this are BCOM 510A: Communication for Managers and Professional Development and BNAD 597A: MBA Consulting Project, which extend throughout the entire 16-week semester. Note: mid-term and fi nal examinations dates for the eight-week courses occur in four week intervals and generally take place on Fridays and Saturdays. Although most classes are not held on Fridays, there are occasional make-up class sessions, case competitions and career related events. Avoid making weekend arrangements until the academic calendar is communicated to you later during summer.

To see how the classes come together for your course planning timeline over the next two years, refer to the sample plan that outlines core and elective classes on the following pages.

ELLER BUSINESS CONSULTINGSection 2.

Experiential learning opportunities are built into both years of study at Eller MBA. They provide full-time Eller MBAs with a competitive edge to differentiate themselves in the job market as effective communicators and leaders. Students are challenged to deliver results and meet key milestones throughout the first year that are built within the core curriculum through two full-length semester courses: Business Communication and Consulting Projects. Business Communication is taught in the fall semester, giving students the foundation they need for working with clients in spring semester with their consulting projects. As one of the first semester core classes, BusinessCommunication is a graduate-level course designed exclusively for MBA students to develop and practice core elements of corporate communication strategy: strategic audience-based messages delivered in business writing and presentations. Over the semester, business community executives provide feedback on student benchmark presentations, strategy board presentations, executive briefings, analyst presentations, and crisis communication simulations. Additionally, students master the business writing skills necessary to succeed in today’s environment.

Eller Business ConsultingThe consulting project course creates a unique opportunity for students to work directly with companies in a strategic consulting engagement. As a required class in the spring semester of the first year, the course provides student teams the opportunity to apply communication and core business skills to address an actual business problem or explore a potential market opportunity. Project management, client management, and leadership concepts are taught and applied in the course. Each student team is augmented by the executive director of Eller Business Consulting, the assistant director of Eller Business Consulting, and a faculty advisor whose subject matter expertise is aligned with the project’s focus. Over the semester, student teams perform research and create innovative recommendations that the companies can implement in their organizations.

Many students choose to take out a loan to pay for all or part of costs such as tuition, books and living expenses associated with attending an MBA program. The MBA program does not manage the Financial Aid (loan) process but rather works with The University of Arizona’s Offi ce of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) http://fi nancialaid.arizona.edu. The Financial Aid contact handles all MBA loan applications and is knowledgeable about the loan options available to you.

We strongly recommend that you reach out to our Financial Aid contact as soon as possible after your admittance into the Eller MBA program to learn more about the student loan process.

Graduate Student Loan OptionsThere are three primary loan types for which Eller MBA students can apply:

1. Staff ord Loans (for U.S. citizens only)2. Federal Graduate PLUS Loans3. Private Education Loans

Students who are U.S. citizens should apply for the PLUS loans before considering a Private Educational Loan.

Student loans are based on “fi nancial need,” which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)The FAFSA should be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov before applying for fi nancial aid.

The FAFSA determines a student’s fi nancial need based on school-determined cost of attendance and expected family contribution (based on information provided by the student).

After students complete the FAFSA, individual results are sent to the student and The University of Arizona’s Offi ce of Student Financial Aid (OFSA). The OSFA will then put together a fi nancial aid package, which can be reviewed online through the UAccess system.

Federal Staff ord LoansFederal Staff ord Loans are awarded to eligible* students who complete a FAFSA.

Unsubsidized Staff ord Loans are not awarded based on fi nancial need. You will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If you allow the interest to accrue while you are in school or during other periods of nonpayment, the interest will be capitalized or added to the principal amount of your loan, and additional interest will be based on that higher amount.

Graduate students can borrow up to $20,500 annually in Staff ord Loans and $138,000 in a lifetime.

*To be eligible for Federal Staff ord Loans a student must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, maintain satisfactory academic progress as defi ned by the University of Arizona, be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree program for 9 graduate units, and be in “good standing” with any federal student loan program. For additional information, contact OSFA.

Graduate Plus LoansFederal Graduate PLUS Loans are a second type of loan option for MBA students that can serve to fi ll the gap between the cost of attendance and Staff ord Loan funding. Graduate PLUS loans are a cost-eff ective alternative to private loans. This type of loan has benefi ts including: no aggregate limit, fi xed interest rates, no prepayment penalty and no cosigner requirement. A student can borrow up to the total cost of attendance minus other fi nancial aid.

PLUS loans are also awarded through the federal government, determined by the information completed in the online FAFSA form. After reviewing the FAFSA form, the OSFA will determine the eligible amount

of PLUS loans for which the student qualifies. Unlike Stafford Loans, PLUS loans are credit-based and require a credit review upon completing a lender application.

Private Educational LoansPrivate Education Loans are not part of the Stafford or PLUS programs and may have different eligibility and term requirements (i.e. interest rates, repayment options, discounts, extra fees, etc.). These loans are provided through credible private lenders and terms will vary from lender to lender.

Private lenders through the University of Arizona include, but are not limited to:

• Chase • Sallie Mae • Citibank • US Bank • Discover • Wells Fargo

A full listing of all approved lenders through the University of Arizona can be viewed online at: http://financialaid.arizona.edu/types-aid/loans/private-educational-loans

ScholarshipsThe Eller MBA program offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships that are awarded at the time of admission. If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be notified in your letter offering admission to the program.

Please note that all scholarship recipients must file a FAFSA in order for funds to be disbursed.

There are many scholarships available outside of those awarded by the Eller MBA program. We encourage all candidates to explore scholarship opportunities as part of their preparation for the MBA program. See “Useful Scholarship Websites” for more scholarship information.

REGISTRATION/TUITION PAYMENT OPTIONSRegistration/Tuition bills are mailed 3-4 weeks before the first day of classes for both the Fall and Spring semesters. Tuition is due on the first day of classes. The University of Arizona accepts several methods of payment including credit card payments, check payments and cash payments.

While the Eller MBA program is a relatively small program, the University of Arizona is home to more than 40,000 students. This means that you’ll receive the benefits of a larger institution while attending classes in a small, intimate setting. With Tucson’s close proximity to Mexico and our dedication to global exposure, you’ll gain a new perspective and become better prepared to work and thrive in today’s global environment. We highly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to you by our program and the larger University community. Building a consistent brand in your community and abroad will set you up for success in your professional career.

Student InvolvementThere are several opportunities to take on formal leadership roles within the Eller community and to participate in activities organized by Eller’s student leaders. Students run for office, lead groups or teams, volunteer in the community, take in presentations from world-renowned speakers, and the list continues.

A few examples of formal leadership opportunities available at the Eller MBA program are:

Full-Time MBA Student Association (MBASA) The MBA Student Association (MBASA) is a student-run organization that serves as a key partner between the student body and Team MBA. MBASA represents the students’ interests in academic, professional, and social activities. Professional clubs fall within the scope of the MBASA umbrella, serving to help students deepen their knowledge of distinct functional areas.

Each incoming class holds unique viewpoints and goals, and MBASA strives to create

new opportunities that reflect the changing interests and needs of such a diverse, close-

knit community. Evidence of these unique factors is visible based on the range and

scope of the professional clubs that are overseen by MBASA.

Professional Clubs

sense of accomplishment, bragging rights, and often cash awards are fruits of the team’s labor. Team MBA partners with teams for selection and preparation. Alumni EventsEller MBA alumni are very active in the professional and career management components of our program. Alumni continually invest in the program through a multitude of hands-on opportunities including serving as judges for case competitions, evaluating students through mock interviews, hosting company information sessions, and organizing networking events. From Third Thursdays — a monthly event that brings local alumni and students together — to our Eller MBA Alumni LinkedIn site, our goal is to enable students and alumni to connect.

International Student PopulationThe Eller MBA program values the perspective that students from countries outside the U.S. bring to our community. Not only do classroom discussions involve a global perspective but group projects, social activities, and friendships enrich the experience of all our students. Such a breadth of views and backgrounds has fostered numerous international clubs and organizations that allow students to engage and grow.

The software environment at the Eller College of Management is based on a Microsoft Windows 10 Professional environment. The Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is also used extensively throughout the Eller Graduate and Undergraduate programs.

Most professors build their classes around the Microsoft Office suite and expect students to have this ready to go for the first day of the program. Although Mac conversion software is available, some students experience difficulty navigating the systems during class, exams, and while studying or working with fellow classmates for team projects.

If you are looking to purchase a new laptop, the following are minimum software standards you should look for. For more information, please visit the Eller IT website at https://it.eller.arizona.edu.

While specifi c desktop and notebook models may vary at any point in time, the minimal specifi cations listed below will serve as a guideline for selecting a computer system. Eller IT can assist you in customizing a computer specifi cation and in placing the equipment order. All of these guidelines should be viewed as “get at least this.” For example, we

recommend that you get at least 8 GB of memory. In some cases, a selected unit may not meet a minimal recommendation due to the actual model design. For example, you may choose a small notebook that has a 12” display or you may choose a larger notebook that off ers a 17” display.

1 Display size will depend on unit chosen. Some units only off er 12” screens. Others off er 17” screens. 14-15 inches is typical for most notebook and convertible units. 2 Units generally come equipped with a default integrated graphics media accelerator. These are good graphics chips however you will truly enjoy the capabilities provided by the more

expensive graphics options. This is especially true as you migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or Windows 10 in the future. More memory on your video chipset means greater performance of your video.

3 Accidental Damage Protection is highly recommended for notebook users. 4 Theft protection is highly recommended for student purchases. Unfortunately, items get stolen in University environments. Eller College Faculty and Staff systems are covered through UA

Risk Management and do not require the purchase of theft protection.

If you already own a Mac computer, be prepared to invest time on your own outside of class to learn how to use system conversion software. For software, the Apple system should at least be running OS X with Boot Camp or Parallel to run Windows-only programs. While a variety of compatible and comparable software is avail-able for OS X, we recommend the software listed under the Microsoft Software section for use on the windows side of your Mac (using Boot Camp or Parallel).

Free SoftwareSoftware that is free to UA students can be downloaded at https://sitelicense.arizona.edu. You will need your NET ID and password to access downloads.

Finding a place to live is a fun and possibly frustrating aspect of moving. When considering where to live, consider the following:

• Proximity relative to campus and McClelland Hall (home to the Eller College of Management)

• Transportation mode to/from campus and parking if needed (many students choose to live near campus and either walk or ride their bikes to class)

• Number of roommates if any• Rent and expenses

Campus HousingResidence Life offers a development on campus, La Aldea, specifically designed for graduate and professional students. At La Aldea, students can choose a 1, 2, or 4 bedroom unit. Each unit is equipped with standard furniture and appliances and the community offers study rooms, a fitness room, interior courtyards, laundry facilities, as well as a bike rack and storage.

Contracts are 10 months with an option to extend into summer. Roommates can be assigned or mutually requested, or you can live alone. This is a good choice for those who don’t have a car and need a turn-key option. The walk to McClelland Hall from La Aldea is approximately 10 minutes. Rates and reservation details can be found on their site. http://www.life.arizona.edu/home/graduate-housing

Housing Near CampusHousing options near campus are in high demand and fill quickly. Remember to start your search far enough in advance to ensure you secure your first preference of housing. Often times, discounts are given to renters signing a lease for a full 12-month year as opposed to 10-month options. Many students enjoy living on the outskirts of campus within walking or biking distance from McClelland Hall.

If you want to live near the University, search: University, Sam Hughes, 4th Avenue, Central Tucson, Himmel Park. http://tucson.craigslist.org/
