During this time he always thought that he would like to train to be a teacher, but he was working long hoursfor his business and the opportunity to look into training never arose.

Due to the recession work started to take a down-turn, and Lloyd decided it was the right time for him, hiswife and four children to move from Lincolnshire to Evesham where he has family. Lloyd felt he now had theopportunity to investigate how he could get into teacher training. He contacted two local universities whoboth advised him that his first step was to join an Access course.

Lloyd’s son had applied to South Worcestershire College to join a Sports course and so Lloyd decided to alsoapproach the College about joining the Access course.

“Most people on this year’s course have used the course as a progression route into studying nursing ormidwifery at university, and I was the only one wanting to go into teaching. However, the Course Manager,Sheila, structured the course to suit each of us and our individual progression routes” said Lloyd.

“I’ve had a lot of help from college staff with my personal statement on my application to university andwhen you are up against 900 other applicants at each university, as I was, it is vital that you get all the advicefrom the experts that you can.”

“The Access course has been excellent preparation for university. The only writing I did as a plasterer was witha pencil from behind my ear, writing quantities of materials that I needed to order on the wall. The Accesscourse is hard work, and I have spent as much time on my work at home as I have in college, but thanks tothe staff on the course I now feel very prepared and confident about joining university in September andfinally fulfilling my dream to become a teacher.”

Lloyd will be starting his Primary Initial Teacher Education BA (Hons) at the University of Worcester inSeptember.

Stephen is now in his second year of the Level 3 course and plans to move on to the University of Worcesterto work towards his Pre Hospital Emergency and Unscheduled Care qualification, which will qualify him towork as a paramedic.
