What you need to knowDISTRIBUTE THE TOKENS Please hand out the tokens just before the redemption period begins (2–29 March 2015) and explain to children what they’re for. We have created a flyer for you to send to parents with information about World Book Day, the tokens and the £1 books. You can download it from WORLDBOOKDAY.COM/TEACHERS-TOOLKIT

THE £1 BOOKS Pupils can exchange their book token for one of 10 exclusive £1 World Book Day books, or use it to get £1 o any book costing £2.99 or more. Our guide to 2015’s two £1 books for pre-schoolers is on page 4 of this pack and online at WORLDBOOKDAY.COM/BOOKS

PARTICIPATING BOOKSELLERS Many independent bookshops, high street chains (WHSmith and Waterstones), and supermarkets (Tesco and Asda) all over the UK will redeem the vouchers. Parents and children can find their local bookshop at BOOKSELLERS.ORG.UK/BOOKSHOPSEARCH

no bulk redemptionsPlease DO NOT try to redeem the £1 book tokens in bulk, as bookshops have been instructed not to do this.

Together, we can help children to develop a love of books and reading: reading for just 10 minutes a day can make a huge dierence to a child’s future.

Children’s literature and books play a fundamental role in developing children’s academic engagement, development and life chances, providing the framework and stimulus through which to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them, through empathising with characters and situations in stories.

Nursery rhymes, songs and lullabies are an early-years essential and a wonderful way for pre-schoolers to have fun together. To celebrate World Book Day 2015 we’d love you to hold a special Big Little Rhyme-Along session in your nursery or pre-school. It’s a great way for young children to get involved, learn something new and enjoy performing some simple rhymes or songs. We’ve created a selection of resources to help you plan and hold a Big Little Rhyme-Along in your nursery or pre-school. They’re available for you to download and print from WORLDBOOKDAY.COM/RESOURCES/NURSERY

WHY rhyme?Babies and young children respond to rhythm and repetition and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that these help them to learn new words and develop their language and reading skills. Additionally, singing nursery rhymes in a group setting will help pre-school children learn to listen, take turns and join in, while counting and action songs such as Five Little Ducks and Incy-Wincy Spider will help improve number skills and co-ordination.

Bookstart Rhymetimes take place in children’s nurseries and libraries all over the UK. They incorporate a mix of songs, rhymes, rhythms and movement as well as providing the opportunity to share games, novelty books and toys. Learn more and find Bookstart Rhymetimes events near you at

We know how busy you are so, to take the hard work out of planning for World Book Day we’ve partnered with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) to put together a set of twenty dierent ideas for Reception to Year 6, along with all the resources you’ll need to make them happen. Based around the action words, CrEaTe, ImAgInE, DiScOvEr, ExPlOrE and ExPeRiEnCe, there are simple suggestions and case studies too, so that you can see how they’ve worked in other settings. There are also lots of ideas for sharing books and reading.

Whether you pick one idea or try a few, The Big Book O will help ensure that the gains of celebrating books and reading on World Book Day continue to ripple long beyond the day itself.

Plus, you’ll have access to free teaching resources at cLpE.oRg.uK so you can do more in-depth work.

Welcome to the world of...

Sophy Henn lives and works in Sussex, England. She studied Fashion at Central Saint Martins, accidentally had a London-based career as an Art Director in advertising, then completed an MA in Illustration at the University of Brighton. Now she writes and illustrates children’s books in her studio, with a large cup of tea by her side, and can’t quite believe her luck.

Sophy created the gorgeous illustrations you’ll find dotted around our website and on the tokens, resource packs and display materials for World Book Day 2015. Her very first book, Where Bear? is a deceptively simple and exquisitely illustrated picture book about a little boy and his bear, and their journey to find a place called home.

Exploring friendship, camaraderie and discovery, Where Bear? is a moving story full of humour that is certain to capture the hearts of its readers, both young and old.

Meet this year’s

official World Book Dayillustrator

The ReadingZone Picture Book Competition kicks off in January 2015 when children and young people aged 4–18 years are invited to create a picture book, either individually, in a group or as a class. The picture books can be made using any media and can be up to 24 pages long. The competition will be judged by a well-known author or illustrator (still to be announced) and the overall winner gets a free author event. Winners of each of the four categories get 50 printed copies of their winning picture book.
