Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals Market 2014-2024: Probiotics, Vitamins, Minerals & Other Dietary Supplements & Nutrients
7. Expert Opinion ____
7.1 William Green, Director of Public Affairs and Relations, Nutricia
Advanced Medical Nutrition, Danone Place Schiphol
7.1.1 Key Trends and Developments in the Nutrients Market Nutricia is specialising in nutrients and foods for specialised medical purposes. In the elderly
category we see more and more opportunity for people who need specific food, as a result of the
effects of aging. That is largely because the population, especially in Europe, is getting much older
than it used to, and there is more and more understanding that people who are older need specific
kind of nutrition.
7.1.2 Technological Developments Expected to See Over the Next 10
Years in the Nutrients Market As food companies become more sophisticated in breaking down the specific attributes into
different subdivisions. There is a lot more sophistication in this area on the treatment, for example,
with weight protein, and that is probably where the most technological breakthrough will come
through. The second technology will be a better understanding of how nutrition affects people from
the health care perspective. At the moment, you have essentially a situation where the medical
care is considered to be the province of drugs, and nutrition is considered to be a product of a
healthy living, and you are going to see much more people working on how the two interact and
complement one another.
7.1.3 Challenges and Opportunities in the Nutrients Market If you are constructing a new category in any kind of space, than you have to raise awareness, in
our particular case, there is a double awareness that has to be clear: if you have to raise
awareness amongst consumers, there are ways in which they can help themselves, which they did
not necessarily believe that they had an access before, and you also have to raise awareness
among health care professionals that these products can be useful for their patients. There are a
lot of opportunities to see how the nutrition works. In disease specific areas, for example, how does
nutrition affect bone development in young children, how does nutrition affect maintenance of
memory in elderly, and seeing how nutrition works on different parts of the body – the future of

8.4 LifeVantage Corporation Overview LifeVantage specialises in Nrf2 science and it is the maker of Protandim®, the Nrf2 Synergizer®
patented dietary supplement, so it is a science based nutraceutical company. LifeVantage looks
how to transform wellness and anti-aging internally and externally with products that reduce
oxidative stress at the cellular level.
The company was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. LifeVantage
Corporation markets and sells proprietary products, primarily Protandim, to individuals throughout
the United States and in Japan, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and Mexico.
The company’s Protandim product is a patented dietary supplement that has been in a clinical trial
to reduce the age-dependent increase in markers of oxidative stress. Protandim combats oxidative
stress by increasing the body’s natural antioxidant protection at the genetic level, inducing the
production of naturally-occurring protective antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase,
catalase and glutathione-related enzymes. The company holds six U.S. patents and three
international patents relating to Protandim.
The company’s intellectual property is covered, in part, by six issued U.S. patents and three issued
foreign patents in Australia, China and India. Corresponding foreign patent applications are
pending in Canada, Europe and Japan. Protandim is a registered trademark in the United States,
Australia, Canada, China, Costa Rica, the European Community, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand
