Page 2: fundamental scientific and engineering ... - Bernal Institute · and societal issues The Bernal Institute is named after John Desmond Bernal – one of Ireland’s most influential

We are launching the Bernal Institute – combining the Bernal Project, the Materials and Surface Science Institute and the Stokes Institute into a single entity – to establish UL as a world leader in key research areas where we will deliver real world impact.

The University of Limerick’s research programmes are unrivalled in terms of real world impact. We benchmark ahead of our peers in terms of patents, campus spinout companies, job creation and innovation. The generation of high quality research aimed at stimulating start-up companies and enhancing existing enterprises has been a central focus of UL’s research strategy.

The Bernal Institute resides in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and is comprised of researchers from scientific and engineering disciplines who have a strong track record in translating their fundamental knowledge and expertise into solutions for a range of academic and industrial challenges.

The Institute will focus its activities on the thematic areas of Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Process Engineering, and Fluid Dynamics, selected to complement strategic priorities at the University of Limerick, building on existing competencies as well as aligning with national and international priority research areas.

The Bernal Institute will help nurture Ireland’s research leaders of the future and support Ireland’s progress for many generations to come. The Institute has already established a significant track record in generating research impact. We host a number of leading research centres, including: the Science Foundation Ireland funded Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) and three Enterprise Ireland/IDA funded Technology Centres: Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC), Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC) and the Irish Composites Centre (IComp).

The Bernal Institute is named after John Desmond Bernal – one of Ireland’s most influential scientists. He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of crystallography, a technique that is extensively used in a wide range of scientific disciplines. In addition to his scientific strengths, Professor Bernal had a reputation as a selfless supporter of and mentor to young scientists.

VISIONThe Bernal Institute will be a leading global research and innovation organisation, synonymous with excellence in our prioritised research themes.

MISSIONThe Bernal Institute is committed to the creation of an innovation ecosystem. With state of the art facilities, it will be responsive to emerging opportunities that deliver economic and social impact through the creation and application of knowledge. The Bernal Institute will enable UL reach its goal in becoming an internationally recognised research-led university.
