y realizar ejercicios sobre las diferentes unidades en el Sistema Métrico y sus

equivalentes en el Sistema Inglés, por ejemplo:

Unidad Sistema Métrico Sistema Inglés Factor de conversión

Masa gramo (g) libra (pound, lb) 1 lb / 454 g

Distancia centímetro (cm) pulgada (inch, in) 1 in / 2.54 cm

volume 1 cm3 = 1mL 1 cuarto (1 qt) 1 qt/946 ml

Tiempo 1 segundo (s) 1 segundo (sec) 1s /1 sec

Se realizarán ejercicios usando los factores de conversión aplicando el redondeo a las

cifras significativas, por ejemplo:

a. Convertir 2.5 lb en gramos = 0.50 lb * 454g/1 lb = 227 g

y redondeando a 2 cifras significativas = 230 g

b. Se realizarán ejercicios calculando la densidad para caracterizar compuestos

químicos y farmaceúticos. Ejemplo: masa de 10.0 mL de agua = 9.884 g

Afterward, listen and provide feedback to the delivery of at least two of your colleagues’

recordings. Make sure to take notes on fundamental aspects of the information you searched

and that of your colleague’s contributions. Bring the notes to class to elaborate during a

group activity. The facilitator will evaluate this activity using the Oral Communication Skills

Rubric (Appendix E). This rubric can be accessed in the Course Menu section of Blackboard

under the link titled Appendices: Language Rubrics.

5. Continue to work on your digital portfolio; follow the instructions in the Digital Performance

Portfolio Assessment Handbook.

E. Application Activities during the workshop

1. The facilitator will lead the class in a review of the topics covered in the previous workshop

to ensure students’ comprehension. Students will share one concept learned so far that has

drawn their attention the most and explain why. The facilitator will evaluate this activity

using the Participation Rubric (Appendix F). This rubric can be accessed in the Course

Menu section of Blackboard under the link titled Appendices: Language Rubrics.

2. The student will begin bonding ionic elements (metals with non-metals) in accordance with

the octet rule and the pairing of electrons, at the same time the student will name the binary

ionic compounds in accordance with IUPAC rules.

3. The facilitator will gather students in groups of three students each. Guided by the

facilitator, each group will categorize examples of ionic compounds by writing formulas of

ionic compounds, recognizing polyatomic ions and describing the octet rule and

distinguishing covalent compounds. Compose a group document, as an outline that will

serve as the guideline for a brief oral report.

Page 44: Fundamentals of General Chemistry Fundamentos de … 224 DLP... · CHEM 224 FUNDAMENTALS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1 . Sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez, Inc. School of Professional

CHEM 224 FUNDAMENTALS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY 44

a. The students will begin bonding nonmetals with nonmetals in covalent bonds and the rule

to name them in accosrdance with the IUPAC rules.

b. The students will learn how to name and represent ternary ionic compounds, identifying

salts, acids and bases.

While presenting your information, be sure to include ethical concepts as well as your

professional opinion. Be ready to discuss questions from the peers. The facilitator will

evaluate this activity using the Oral Communication Skills Rubric (Appendix E). This rubric

can be accessed in the Course Menu section of Blackboard under the link titled Appendices:

Language Rubrics.

4. Using the written document from the activities before the workshop, the facilitator will guide

students to write electron dot structures of molecules using the VSEPR to determine the

different shapes of simple molecules. Additionally, students will have to identify different

examples of weak and strong electrolytes, considering the concept of electronegativiy to

predict the attractive forces in chemical compounds.

5. The facilitator will briefly clarify any topic discussed from Workshop One to Workshop Four

before the students take their first partial exam. This is not the time for comprehensive

explanations but to screen any difficulty that may arise. Afterwards, the facilitador will

administer the partial exam in the time allotted.

6. Students will write a self-reflection on what they believe their role is in understanding

chemical compounds as nursing professionals. If deemed necessary, the facilitator may ask

students to send this activity after Workshop Four, but before Workshop Five (Taller Cinco).

7. The facilitator will discuss and clarify any doubts regarding the activities due prior to the

next workshop.

theory. The facilitator will evaluate this activity using the Group Oral and Audiovisual

Presentation Rubric (Appendix G). This rubric can be accessed in the Course Menu section of

Blackboard under the link titled Appendices: Language Rubrics.

3. The facilitator will guide the students in the interpretation of nuclear reactions and the relationship

with natural radioactivity, to classify the types of radiation measurements. The facilitator will

also show how to calculate the pH, the hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion concentration in mole per

liter in a solution in water of an acid or a base. Students will apply the LeChatelier principle to

explain the equilibrium displacement in acidic of base buffers, and will discuss the equilibrium

constant for an acidic buffer to calculate the pKa.

4. Keeping the same group composition as with the previous activity, each student will use the notes

taken as part of the discussion board activity, and will bring one example of the radioactivity

decompositions with the emissions of alpha, beta particles and gamma radiation in conection with

the Radioactivity series will be illustrated with the Uranium decomposition. Examples of the use

of isotopes in health sciences will be discussed in class specifically for cancer treatment.

a. Group members will decide on the most suitable example.
