Fungi
What are the characteristics of Fungi?
● Consumers: Eat by absorbing food● Gets food from soil, wood, decaying organic matter, or
living plants and other organisms● Can be single-celled to the largest organisms alive● Can't move on their own● Decomposers: they feed on and break down dead
organisms
Fungi Cell Structure
Fungal cells have a cell wall made of chitin (remember that plant cell walls are made of cellulose).
Fungal Structure Multicellular fungi are organised into a mycelium - which is made from thread-like structures called hyphae. The hyphae contain many nuclei.
What are some examples of Fungi?
● Mushrooms ● Truffles● Lichen● Yeast (single celled)● Mold
Beneficial Uses of Fungi
● Used to make chemicals in manufacturing● Produce antibiotics (e.g penicillin) ● Clean the environment ● Food production ( blue cheese, mushrooms, yeast,
bread and soy sauce)
Harmful Effects of Fungi
In Humans:
● Respiratory (lung) diseases (pneumonia)● Athlete's foot ● Ringworm (makes a raised round circle that looks like it
was caused by a worm)
Fungi are also responsible for 70% of all crop disease.
