Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Constellation Energy the 2009 edition of Har-borfest will feature an exciting new venue, the Constellation Energy Environment Expo.

“When people think of going green they typi-cally think of alternative sources of energy such as wind, solar, and water. With our Environment Expo we wish to entertain and educate our visi-tors on many different ways to be environmen-tally conscious, from going green, to alternative energy sources, to sustainability efforts, and to protecting the environment,” said Loney.

Fireworks July 25As it has for the past 21 years, the Oswego

harbor will bathe in the glow of a dazzling fire-works display as the Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular lights up the sky on Saturday evening, July 25 during Harborfest 2009.

The nearly half-hour Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular is the only world-class fireworks exhibition in upstate New York and demonstrates the highest level of pyrotechnic artistry as thousand of shells and “ground ef-fects” are choreographed to a carefully selected music track. Produced by Fireworks by Grucci, the Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spectacular is a very special event that draws an estimated audience of more than 100,000 people to the shores of Lake Ontario each year.

The Entergy Nuclear Fireworks Spec-tacular at Harborfest 2009 will begin at9:30 p.m. and the music-track will again be simulcast on radio. Come early to enjoy every-thing Harborfest has to offer and find a good spot for watching the fireworks. Best viewing

is along the harbor area in the city of Oswego from Fort Ontario on the east to Breitbeck Park on the west.

The Monkees lead singer, Micky Dolenz will be per-forming live on Friday July 24 as part of Harborfest 2009.

At that time Kitt, (owner Thomas Kitt) was running a successful stained glass business he also started from scratch. Kitt’s business took off due to the growing popu-larity of kayaking and the lack of customer guidance among the other kayak retailers.

Operating mostly by him-self, Kitt is able to ensure that

every kayak buyer is matched to the boat that best meets their individual characteris-tics and circumstances. Cus-tomers range from those who have never sat in a kayak to expert kayakers interested in the latest racing models.

There are kayaks for chil-dren as young as 6 or 7 years old that will allow them to match an adult paddler’s pace. Today you will find 10 manu-facturers’ lines - more than 150 kayaks in Kitt’s shop, which was the former Masonic Lodge in the village of Camillus. He has studied kayak design and built several kayaks at the shop, and shares his knowl-edge with anyone who is in-terested. Kitt and wife Kathy

participate in the Eastern Outdoor Retailers Association annual shows and demos and Kitt ensures prospective boat-buyers that either he or Kathy have test paddled every boat in the shop.

Customers can trust Kitt’s advice and expertise to put them in the most appropriate kayak to ensure many years of paddling enjoyment. He has also instituted a new policy: everyone who purchases a new kayak from his shop will receive a complimentary pad-dling lesson. He points out that people spend money on the boats he recommends and in order to get the most enjoy-ment from them they need to learn some basic skills.

Private lessons, gift certifi-cates, accessories, safety gear and delivery service are also available, as is more informa-tion on the web at camillus-kayak.com.

Syracuse City Eagle, June 11, 2009/15

amaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., through its OHV

Access Initiative, has awarded Oswego Valley ATV Club a $22,000 grant in response to an applica-tion focused on trail development. Since January 2008, the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative (www.yamaha-motor.com/ohvaccess) has been assisting ATV clubs across the country with establish-ing and expanding recreational opportunities. To date Yamaha has awarded more than $875,000 throughout the United States with New York receiving approximate-ly $120,000 in the initiative’s first year of funding. These awards have been pivotal in adding and maintaining access to thousands of miles of trails through private and state land.

“The Yamaha OHV Access Initiative was created to serve as a resource to those in the OHV community dedicated to safe and responsible riding and open, sustainable access to our nation’s

trails,” said Steve Nessl, market-ing manager of Yamaha’s ATV and SxS operations. “From the many applications received and the grants awarded to organiza-tions such as the Oswego Valley ATV Club, clearly New York has tremendous potential as an OHV adventure tourism destination.”

OVTVA members James Mar-ra-president, Jermey Bomgren-vice-president, Regina Lunken-heimer-treasurer and Patricia Marra-secretary with support from Wheel-A-Way Motorsports in Fulton submitted the Applica-tion on Feb. 23, 2009, and were subsequently notified of the award April 14. With this grant, OVATV club acquired a Massey Ferguson tractor and surfacing equipment to expand and com-bine their system to more than 100 miles with an interconnection with the ALL County ATV Club. ew York’s largest water theme park is getting bigger, better

and wetter this summer and tell-ing guests to “Go Ape…If They Dare!” Park staff began con-struction this fall on a new Can-onBOWL water slide which will debut for the summer on opening day Wednesday June 17. The first new water ride since the installa-tion of the Shadow in 2002, this new double tube ride, purchased from Proslide Technology Inc. of Canada, will be located on the popular Water Safari Island right next door to sister thrill ride Kill-ermanjaro. The ride’s name, The Curse of the Silverback, definitely puts the word theme in water theme park.

The “silverback” theme refers to the dominant male gorillas who lead and protect their living groups, named after the mature male’s saddle of light grey hair. Gorillas are found in several countries in Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park chose the silverback

gorilla theme for a number of reasons. They’re a perfect fit for the safari theme - the image of the gorilla’s power adds more thrill to the ride, and they’re very fasci-nating creatures who are endangered and need to be protected.

“We are in a great position to help and that’s why we have partnered with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) to raise awareness and funds for the gorillas,” said Katie Noonan, mar-keting director for the park. “In December of 2008 we adopted our own silverback gorilla through the organization and during the summer we’re bringing a DFGFI fundraising initiative to the park called “Coins for Congo” that will support programs in Africa that improve the survival of these amazing primates who so closely

match our own hu-man genetic makeup. We are reaching out and asking people to help,” Noonan adds.

2009 has even been named the Year of the Gorilla by sev-eral organizations including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultur-al Organization that are launching initia-tives to protect these primates. By visiting

the park this summer, families can enjoy a day full of fun, experi-ence our new water ride and learn more about the gorillas and what can be done to protect them!

The Enchanted Forest/Water Safari features more than 50 rides and attractions, including 32 water rides all with heated water. The park is located on Route 28 in Old Forge, and opens for the 2009 season on Wednesday June 17.
