Funky Bass Groove (L#66)

Your Action Plan

1. When learning grooves like this one it's importantthat we really understand the tonality we're playingover (in this case C7) and can visualize it over theentire fingerboard. Don't get me wrong, you couldsimply learn the groove and leave it at that, but I'mstriving to get you to learn these techniques, grooves and exercises on a deeper level. I'mshowing you this groove for a purpose. Not justsomething cool to play at a sound check.

To visualize the C7 arpeggio over the entire neck you must work on your arpeggios. If you haven't checked out my lesson on how to practice arpeggios yet make sure you do so [link here]. Learn the C7 arpeggio starting from three different fingers on your fretting hand (fingering discussed within the arpeggio tutorial). By doing this you'll begin to 'see' C7 over the entire fingerboard and not just relate it to one part of the neck. This means that when you learn the groove within this tutorial you'll be able to see your hand moving between the different positions.

2. Your next step is to learn the groove. Work throughthe tutorial slowly making sure you can referenceeach part of groove to one of the three C7 arpeggioshapes you've learned. This is something you shouldtry and do with every groove and riff you know. Ifyou can dissect a groove and understand why andhow it works, it means that when it comes tocreating your own riffs and grooves you will have aneasy formula to follow. You won't be just usingguesswork.

3. By now you should be able to visualize thearpeggios using three different shapes and play thegroove I showed you within the lesson. You shouldalso be able to see how the arpeggios and thegroove relate to each other. Now I want you tocompose your own riff or groove over a C7 tonality.

When composing your own groove you can also use some of the chromatic techniques that I use within my groove. They tend to give grooves forward motion and definitely give you more options to play around with.

You can either use the drum groove we've been using throughout the lesson, or something completely different. The choice is yours.
