Project Outline

Introduction – Before Automation-The existing furnace control was totally

manual and electrical system is conventional relay and contractor logic based system. The Furnace of 9 MVA Capacity is being operated by means of the "Mechanical Quinch" operation

– The operation of electrodes ( Up / Down ) are controlled by the rotation of the motor ( 3.7 KW ) for each electrode in either forward or reverse direction, The motor operation is governed by the up & down pushbuttons which finally switches on or off the contactors supplying the power to the motor

– Tap changing is done from the pushbuttons. The tap position is not displayed but depending on the change in current, the Tap no. is calculated.

System Requirements RS CONSULTANCY proposing PLC based furnace control and

monitoring system with considering following philosophy :– Manual - Mode:- In this mode the system works exactly in the

same way as it is working at present. – Semi-Auto Mode :- In this mode, administrator will enter the set

point from Computer separately for three electrodes with +/- offset. PLC will check the actual current of each electrode and makes the electrode to move up/down.

PLC can make the electrode to force to move and thus gives the benefit of avoiding extra energy loss.

The system continuously checks for the safety interlocks and provides the alarm in case of any failure is detected, the alarm will be prompted on the HMI screen so that the corrective measures can be taken. R S
