suggestion that '12' ought to rank with 'species' as a term of second intention is correctly attributed by Prior to C. S. Peirce. ALONZO CHURCH

Ivo THOMAS. Saint Vincent Ferrer's De suppositionibus. Ibid., pp. 88-102. Portions of the treatise mentioned in the title (which was written in 1372) are

abstracted and discussed. The examination and evaluation of the work are from the point of view of modern logic, but with only occasional use of symbolism for purposes of explanation. The author writes in his concluding summary: "We have found modern logical interests touched on in quite a number of places, conspicuously in connection with the existential import of universal propositions, different kinds of existence, propositions referring to themselves, numerical predicates, use and mention of terms, syllogistic and other kinds of argument, analysis and reconstruction of various kinds of proposition. The machinery of investigation is not very handy; for the general use of concrete terms instead of variables does much to offset the convenience of the metalogical standpoint which is equally characteristic of the period. Again, semantical and syntactical themes are somewhat haphazardly considered under the common heading of supposition. However, the results are by no means despicable..."
