Buying local…
Reduces food miles and congestion andpollution on our roads
Food miles are the distance which food travelsfrom ‘farm to fork’. Evidence shows that thisdistance is increasing both internationally and onUK roads.
Food miles create road congestion, noise, disturbance and pollution. They also increase theneed for refrigeration, packaging and processingof our food.
Improves the freshness of your food and causesless stress for livestock
Local food is less likely to need processing, preservatives and packaging, so it should arriveon your plate fresher and healthier than foodwhich has been transported for many miles.Livestock suffer stress when transported and thiscan affect the quality of their meat. This meanslocally butchered meat tends to be tastier as wellas fresher.
Welcome to the Forest of Bowland Local Food Directory. In this publication you will find information about local businesses, both within and close to the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which produce food and drink.
Buying local products is important for many reasons, not onlybecause it supports the economy, but also because theseproducts are part of the fabric of our distinctive landscape.
Helps us to understand how and where food is produced
Buying local, often face-to-face at the farm shopor farmers’ market, helps us to reconnect withthe land and its farmers. It helps us to find outhow and where food is produced and when it isbest to buy certain products, and to buy ourfavourite delicacies with confidence.
Supports the farmers who manage our preciouslandscape and protect the environment
Local producers are often farmers looking todevelop a niche market by creating value-addedproduce which will allow them to carry onfarming. This often involves stocking rare breedsand using traditional methods andenvironmentally friendly farming practices.
So buying local food helps farmers to preserveour special landscapes, protects and increases therange of plant and animal species in the area, andprovides a long-term future for farming.
Supports the local economy by supportingfarmers, distributors and processors
It’s not only farmers who depend on localproduce. Others in the supply chain – thedistributors, processors and retailers – are alsoinvolved. Buying local helps to keep all thesepeople in employment and, importantly, keepsthe money in the local area too.
Supports the social structure and localdistinctiveness of an area
Over-centralisation of food has meant the loss ofregional and seasonal variety, local crafts and asense of belonging in the community. It has led toa decline in small family farms, local abattoirs, small shops and more – all of them unable tocompete in today’s global market.
The Forest of Bowland AONB
4 Local Food Directory
Local produce in Bowland
5www.forestofbowland.com
The primary purpose of the AONB is toconserve and enhance the natural beauty of thearea, whilst meeting the social and economicneeds of landowners, farmers and communities.AONB status has helped the area to maintain itsspecial qualities. Its beautiful scenery and prettyvillages are some of the area’s key attractions.
The Forest of Bowland AONB is a very specialplace for wildlife, and the moors are an especiallyimportant breeding ground for upland birds.Bowland is one of the few remaining breedingsites in England for hen harriers (a nationallythreatened bird). It is also the home of theperegrine falcon and Britain's smallest bird ofprey - the merlin. The damp unimproved uplandpastures attract large populations of wading birdsin spring and summer including curlew, lapwing,
snipe and redshank. There are also valuablewildflower meadows, woodlands and geologicalfeatures within the AONB.
The AONB has a secondary duty to cater forrecreation and tourism, but only if this isconsistent with protecting the natural beauty ofthe area. It is for this reason that we arepromoting sustainable tourism in the Forest ofBowland: tourism which depends on the area’senvironment, and which will conserve andimprove that environment, not detract from it.For example, Bowland offers wonderfulopportunities for quiet enjoyment such as bird-watching, cycling, fishing and horse-riding. Andwith newly opened access land, the area nowoffers some of the most remote and ruggedwalking in the north west.
The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers312 square miles of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire. It is a nationallyprotected landscape because of its unspoiled and richly diverse landscapes, wildlife and heritage. It stretches from the wooded cloughs of the Lune Valleyin the north to the majestic sweep of Pendle Hill in the south, and from thequiet lanes of Eldroth and Lawkland in the east through the pastoral RibbleValley to Beacon Fell and Abbeystead in the west.
The Forest of Bowland is gaining a reputation for fine food and localproduce, so why not seek out some local producers and try it yourself? Use our directory to find the food you’re looking for and visit the suppliersand retailers. There are also several farmers’ markets around Bowland where you can meet the producers and try and buy their food.
Without food production our countryside wouldlook very different. Farming methods haveshaped our land – creating field patterns with drystone walls and hedgerows, farmsteads, barns andworking villages. By supporting the farmers whochoose to carry on farming, you can help protectthis living landscape. Several farmers are rearingtraditional breeds (White Park cattle andHerdwick sheep, for example) and usingtraditional methods (for example, heather-rearedlamb) to bring you the very best flavour andfreshness – try it and buy it!
As the Forest of Bowland is a sheep and cattle-farming area, you’ll find delicious local lamband beef, as well as pork and even wild boar! The area also offers classic and modern varietiesof Lancashire cheese, milk and ice cream andsupports several organic farms and market gardens.
Farmers’ markets
6 Local Food Directory 7www.forestofbowland.com

You can purchase much of the local producelisted in the directory direct from the produceror by phone or mail order. Some producershowever do not have the facilities to sell fromsite and sell their produce to local delicatessens, farm shops, butchers or at farmers’ markets, markets and supermarkets. Many quality localbutchers serve as retail outlets to meatproducers and farmers across Bowland, who areselected for their skill and expertise to providecuts of the finest quality. The focus for many ofthe producers is to put quality above volume toenable the creation of an excellent meat productwith traceability from farm to fork. When visitingyour butcher, why not ask what local meat theyhave available?
There are several high quality farm shops in andaround Bowland. The farm shops mostly stocktheir own produce including meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables and fruit. To provide a full range of freshquality produce, farms also buy in from other localand regional producers. Huntley’s at Samlesbury,Fairfield Farmshop at Clayton le Dale,TasteDelicatessen & Cheesie Tchaikovsky in Clitheroeand Old Holly Farm at Garstang are all goodexamples and are located just outside the AONB,but stock a wide variety of local produce; on-sitecafes also provide an opportunity to sample someof the quality produce the area has to offer.
